Round 6 Match Report
COBURG TIGERS V COLLINGWOOD
ABD GROUP STADIUM
SATURDAY 16th MAY
By Glenn Robertson
The Burgers were again at home this week in the Round 6 clash with Collingwood. ThePies were slight favourites heading into the match positioned just ahead of the Burgers on the ladder. After having last week off the Burger boys were feeling fresh and ready for battle. After a tight first couple of quarters the Burgers got on top in the second half and had the match safely in their grasp by three quarter time.
Both sides were fierce at the ball from the opening bounce with a large number of stoppages early on. The Pies were the first to score before the Burgers rammed home two majors of their own. A couple of sloppy mistakes form the Burgers handed the Pies with easy goals, but accurate kicking gave the Coburg side a minor three point lead going into the first change.
¼ Time: Coburg 4.0 (24) Collingwood 3.3 (21)The Burgers were looking a little shaky in the second term, but managed to stay with the Pies side. Collingwood had seemed to somewhat control most of the play in the first half, but the scoreboard did not resemble this as they only led by three points at the main break. Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Nick Liddle and Jack Riewoldt were Coburg's standout players in the first half. Riewoldt made a very handy return for the
Burgers, and was a vital component to the boys victory. He starred up forward kicking six majors and having a hand in a few others, finishing with thirteen marks for the game, many of them contested.
½ Time: Coburg 7.3 (45) Collingwood 7.6 (48)The first ten minutes of the third quarter was similar to the first half with neither side getting a break away, but then the Burgers opened the flood gates! Starting with a domination in the midfield the ball kept getting pumped into the Tigers forward-50 and the forwards clutched onto everything. Riewoldt slammed home two majors while Jay Schultz moved forward to also convert a couple of telling goals. The rampage had the home fans cheering loudly and saw the boys take a massive 38 point lead into the final change.
¾ Time: Coburg 14.9 (93) Collingwood 8.7 (55)Collingwood kept fighting in the final term booting through four majors, but the Burgers took advantage of their scoring opportunities booting three goals of their own to finish with a fantastic 31 point victory. Adam Thompson was brilliant across half back for the Tigers, while Tom Hislop and Liddle dominated through the midfield. Will Thursfield and Jarrod Silvester controlled the ball down back particularly in the second half and rebounded the ball well out of defence.
This week the Burgers face the struggling Bendigo Bombers side at Queen Elizabeth Oval on Sunday beginning at 2.00pm, while the Reserves start at 11.10am.
