Hardwick wants tough AFL Tigers

SBS
14 July 2017

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has never lost to Brisbane in his time at the Tigers and he doesn't want that streak to end this weekend.

Brisbane should brace themselves for a toughened-up Richmond this weekend after Tigers coach Damien Hardwick ordered a full-throttle response to their dire AFL loss to St Kilda.

Hardwick, who has never lost to the Lions as Tigers coach, said he was considering bringing in Anthony Miles and Nick Vlaustin for Sunday's match to provide a harder edge, while ordering a "mouthguards in" approach to training.

"(Mouthguards in) was the exact quote we used ... most sides pride themselves on that part of the game and we were incredibly disappointed with what we put out," Hardwick said on Friday.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick feeling the love

The Age
14 July 2017

Ash from the Coolaroo recycling plant fire wasn't the only thing circling above Richmond training on Friday morning.

To Tigers coach Damien Hardwick, love was in the air as well.

Love for pantomime villain Kane Cornes, fallen great James Hird, and even some for Ms Hardwick.

Hardwick is moving on from a much-publicised scrap with Cornes in the aftermath of his side's woeful defeat to St Kida last Saturday night.

Cornes' assertion that Richmond had "gotten ahead of themselves" was labelled "s*** comments" by the long-term Tigers boss but Hardwick was eager to douse any notion of a rift on Friday.

"It mightn't seem this way but I've got a lot of love for Kane. We played in a premiership together," he said.

"Kane has a job to do and so have I. If he speaks about my [Richmond] family in that way, he'll cop a whack accordingly.

"I also understand he's got a job to do and I'd never hold that against him.

"It's like Ms Hardwick. We have our blues every now and then but we certainly make up.

"I prefer making up with Ms Hardwick more so with Kane Cornes. We move on pretty quickly."

Hardwick followed his analogy with a plea for the AFL community to embrace Hird.

The Essendon great won the Norm Smith Medal in the 2000 grand final, won against Melbourne.

Convention dictates it is his turn to present the medal at this year's grand final - an offer the AFL has extended and Hird has verbally accepted.

The appearance would be Hird's first formal role in football since leaving his post as Essendon coach in 2015 - a post that will be forever linked to the clubs' 2012 doping scandal.

Hardwick is among many in the AFL community ready to embrace Hird again.

"Footy is a pretty forgiving game and James is one of the all-time great players," he said.

"He's a great leader and a great friend of mine. From my point of view, (we should) wrap your arms around him and bring him back in.

"That's the one thing AFL footy is great for, bringing people together. Not only at AFL level but junior levels as well.

"When everyone has an error in life, we've just got to make sure we continue to wrap our arms around people and get them involved in the game."

The Tigers coach does want his side to move on from last week's demoralising loss to the Saints, saying that a tougher approach will be taken into this sunday's game against Brisbane.

"[Mouthguards in] was the exact quote we used," Hardwick said.

"Most sides pride themselves on that part of the game and we were incredibly disappointed with what we put out."

The Tiger midfield will be confronted by a strong Brisbane Lions on-ball division led by the in-form Dayne Zorko at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Playing primarily as a midfielder this season, Zorko is averaging 26 disposals, has kicked 24 goals and trails only Rory Sloane in tackles and Zach Merrett in total metres gained across the competition.

Hardwick, who has never lost to the Lions as coach, says he has more to worry about than just curtailing the brilliance of the pocket rocket.

"We’ve got some plans in place for Dayne, he’s a very good player," Hardwick said.

"He’s changed his game up a little bit last week versus Geelong, but managed to still kick four goals.

"He’s a really important player, but you’ve also got to understand they’ve got a great leader in Dayne Beams who's capable playing some really good footy as well.

"People sort of underestimate the value of Tom Rockliff as well in that area, so they’ve got a really, really strong midfield that we’ll put a bit of work into."

Hardwick has injected some grunt into his engine room to combat Zorko and company, with contested-ball specialist Anthony Miles to play only his third game of the season after blistering VFL form.

Miles' inclusion points to a far more aggressive Richmond on Sunday, after they were savaged to the tune of 67 points by a rampant St Kilda last week.

Hardwick revealed his side had taken part in some full-blooded training sessions during the week in a bid to regain a hard edge that has served them so well this season.

"(Mouthguards in) was the exact quote we used ... most sides pride themselves on that part of the game and we were incredibly disappointed with what we put out," he said.

Hardwick also confirmed Dylan Grimes will play against the Lions after overcoming a heavy knock sustained in an incident that saw St Kilda’s Tim Membrey receive a two-match suspension.

:lol it's a bloody joke this bloke has a job. I can't even fathom why he's still in the job.

It's hilarious but mindboggling both at the same time.

.....but he took us to three consecutive finals.  :ROTFL
