Richmond v St Kilda

A simple format, take the youngest 18 players from every club and see how they matchup with the rest of the teams in the AFL. Clubs will play a random opponent in a knockout competition, and winning teams will keep playing until the best young team is decided. Using a bit of current form, and a guess at the players’ ability in the future, this might give an idea of who has the best youth. With only 18 players being used, some odd lineups and strange player positioning will be apparent with some teams. No rookie listed players are used, and as long as someone is on the list they get a game

The Tigers have a bigger team than the Saints do when their youth compete, the Tigers' Riewoldt is in this game but the Saints' Riewoldt is too old for this contest. The Deledio and Cotchin versus Ball and Dal Santo battle would be a highlight.

The Tigers have a big forward line, and Carlton don't really have enough height to combat them. Down the other end, the Tigers have good balance in their back line and they should be able to handle whoever plays forward for Carlton. Kreuzer would have to be better than Graham in the ruck, but that might be the only clear win for Carlton, as the other midfield spots might be an even contest.

Where's Thursfield?  He was drafted as a rookie the same year as Deledio, McGuane, Polo etc.

They've just used the youngest 18. Polo is the oldest of that lot and Thursty misses out because he's 4 months older than Polo. The same goes for Patto and Meyer who were also drafted in 2004.

The Tigers are a few years behind the Hawks when it comes to rebuilding through the draft, and they may not have had as many high draft picks to use as they traded away a few and the Hawks traded for a few extra. So Hawthorn have the better collection of youth at the moment, but there is the potential for Richmond to build a contender like the Hawks have. Tall players like Riewoldt and Rance could one day be mentioned alongside Franklin and Thorp while Cotchin, Connors, Edwards and maybe Tambling will grow into an exciting midfield group like the Hawks currently have.

Meh. Highly subjective. I am still interested to see how the Hawks go in 2008. Lots of commentators seem to think Hawthorn have achieved what they need to from their rebuilding faze and now it's just a case of plucking the premiership cup off the shelf. All this after one reasonable season. Perhaps they are correct, I suppose we will see won't we. Perhaps Stewart Dew will prove to be an inspired choice.

The Hawks have a better team at the moment due to the balance and structure of their list with so many 23-27 year olds in their prime but who can tell yet which side has the better collection of youth. So many unproven youngsters albeit with talent who have yet to play or hardly played a senior game.

Surprisingly this website had Collingwood with the best young 18 (better than Hawthorn head to head) yet we smashed the Pies (the media of course gave the excuse that Cloke and Thomas were tired after a long season  ).

the hawks' midfield young guys have hardly had a game apart from jordan lewis whereas we've put in plenty of games into our young mids.....also...their backline looks mighty weak to me.....the only thing going for them is their forward line.....

our midfield and backline certainly have them covered easily.....if young forwards such a hughes, riewoldt, gourdis start to show something...we'll be sweet...

This pretty much proves your point peggles. A large number of young Hawks haven't debuted at all or only made one appearance (they've relied on their senior core) whereas we've got a few games into our cubs.

the fact they havent had to rush any young guys in says a lot about the guys they have playing atm and the good jobs their doing

we have a weaker mid-tier but we also have a massive advantage in the senior groups now which should even itself out

True T2. We haven't had this luxury. Problem is some of our supporters expect all our youngsters to be starring after 2-3 years in the system because a Buddy or Lewis are when the majority of the Hawks now delivering have been in the system 5-8 years. Look at how many Hawks in the mid-20s have only this year reached around 75-100 AFL games.
