Richmond completed the following deals in the AFL’s 2009 trade period, which finished at 2pm today (Friday, October 9):
* Traded Andrew Raines to Brisbane in return for the Lions’ third-round national draft selection (pick No. 44).
* Traded Jay Schulz to Port Adelaide in exchange for Mitch Farmer and draft pick No. 72.
Here’s how Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron, assessed trade week from a Yellow and Black perspective . . .
“We always planned to be quiet and keep our picks, so that we could add to the existing young players we’ve got on the list.
We thought Mitchell Farmer was in the right age bracket for us. Mitch was the 2007 premiership captain with the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup and had shown plenty of promise at under-18 level. But he’d had some injury issues and hadn’t quite settled in Adelaide. Our recruiters had tracked him for the whole year and we really feel he’s got a fair bit to offer. He is tough, quick, good overhead, and a good kick. He’ll be a rebounding defender for us . . . Damien’s style of play lends itself to rebounding defenders, so he’ll slot right in.”
Jay (Schulz) had been linked with Port Adelaide previously, so we were happy to facilitate a trade for him there.
Andrew (Raines) had struggled to get a game with us during the season and later in the year he expressed a desire to move on. That deal with Brisbane was pretty much done on Monday, we just didn’t lodge the paperwork until today.”
