Making a mark
By Paul Daffey
Mon 12 Mar, 2012

DYLAN Grimes is unusual among AFL footballers.

Most AFL players have made the elite level after spending their junior careers up forward or in the midfield because they're the most talented players.

Rarely does a player get through to AFL level after spending his junior career in defence.

Grimes has never played anywhere but defence.

He's spent his whole football life spoiling, and it's something the Richmond coaches are trying to change.

"There's been a bit of a focus for me to take more marks," Grimes said after the Tigers' 59-point victory over Geelong on Saturday.

"Last year I had a tendency to do more spoiling than the coaches would have liked. But this year I've been doing a lot of work on marking."

To that end, he had a very successful game against the Cats. He took seven marks, which is excellent by his standards, but more to the point he took three contested marks.

"That's the most I've had in a game for my entire life," he said.

Grimes missed most of last season after tearing a hamstring tendon in round nine. He was ready to return in the final rounds but the coaches advised him to hold off and put his energy into the pre-season.

Now the 21-year-old just wants to play.

"My body's feeling really good," he said.

"It's good to get back into games and get out of pre-season mode."

Mark Robinson's thoughts on Grimes ....

8. Dylan Grimes

Might've found one here, the Tigers. For too long a problem area on the ground, the Tigers are re-building their tall backs. Kel Moore's body has let him down, Luke McGuane is probably a third tall, meaning Grimes and Alex Rance will be asked to play on the monsters. Rance massively improved last year, and Grimes would appear to be following him. Just eight games in his first two seasons, he is ready for a bigger role.

Have to say this is great to hear/read - went the spoil far too many times last year when he should have gone the mark. Good to know the coaches have flagged it and more importantly he is listening and working on it

Noticed that he was taking quite a few grabs against the cats.

i love "Punchy" Grimes...gives a good honest contest & is rarely gets beat one out...looked like he was more poised overall against the cats (kicking and marking were real pluses)...definitely think our backline is considerably improved with him in the side...

It was his hamstring injury in the last quarter of the dreamtime class that started the rot of loss of form from the club.  At that stage we were flying.

A very important cog in the wheel for our defence.

Schulzenfest is still his favourite but he gave Grimesy some air time on the weekend.

Loving your work this year Grimesy  :thumbsup. Is forming a handy partnership down back with Rance. Thankfully Dylan's long-term hammy injury of last year hasn't affected his closing speed. Just a smart footballer too which we desperately needed in our backline and today added more rebounding attacking runs to his usual solid defensive spoils.

Today was by far the best rebounding display Ive seen from him to date. His defensive work is always quality, was a bit iffy about his rebound, man he looked polished today.
