all matches at all AFL venues or have alternitive grounds like; Visy Park, Craigieburn, etc.

Absolutely no way the MCG or Etihad could be used for to host reserve games

With the amount of traffic per week on those grounds - the surfaces couldn't handle it

Each club would need an alternate venue

New TV & media rights perhaps
Looking at $1 billion this time around, won't take much of that to form a reserves competition.

They say $500k per year per club, so that makes $37.5 million over 5 years out of $1 billion, under 4% of the total tv rights, not even including radio and internet.

That may work from 2012 onwards but wouldn't apply in 2011 as the current TV deals finishes end of next season

So I still question how it will be funded. We have clubs who cannot turn a profit without AFL handouts so I don't see how they could afford to fund expanded lists and all the other overheads that owuld go with running a reserves comp.

Also, if the "reserves comp" is going to include interstate teams - then throw in the extra travel costs as well

inter state clubs can f off !!

dont want your adelaides in the VFL.

i do not think it is possibile anyway - adelaide players get split up amonst the SanFL anyway ..
Stupid attitude, it's the AFL reserves, not the VFL

The AFL covered the salary of the rookies to ensure all clubs had a full compliment of rookies to equalise the competition
Fair chance the AFL could cover the costs for the first year, they make enough to share some more of the wealth, it's not really a handout when all clubs get one.
Would be one of the best investments into development the AFL could make IMO

Plus an extra 12 players (minimum) on each list - that would be roughly $2m per club.

they are indeed but it looks alot more like Essendon and not like Richmond.

Coburg is closer to the north than it is the Yarra also ...

Richmond need there own 2's or a VFL club in the south / east ..

Not necessarily, Collingwood & Geelong's VFL teams have players to fill spots when needed.

Yep, but in any formalised AFL controlled competition, the lists would have to be increased to ~60 (a minimum is my guess) and every single player on that list would be subject to the CBA - the Players Association would not accept anything less and frankly, the AFL would not accept the risk to the image of its brand, of a club 'running out' of players.  Having emergency players to fill spots when needed would not even be considered.

What on earth are you on about?
There could be an AFL Reserves competition and a VFL competition

No. Richmond reserves would play Port or Adelaide or Carlton reserves.
It will be an AFL reserves

Some info on the salary cap in the current VFL ....

Given the unique nature of the VFL, with its mix of aligned, partly aligned, stand alone and AFL clubs, salary cap levels vary markedly.

Each is clearly defined: independent VFL clubs have a $350,000 salary cap; partially aligned clubs $280,000; aligned clubs $215,000 and AFL clubs $155,000.

Clubs are allowed extra financial room if it has a playing coach or playing assistant coach while Bendigo Bombers, North Ballarat, and Frankston also receive an approved travelling allowance up to $25,000.

Clubs in aligned or partially aligned relationships whose AFL partner endure a horrific run of injuries and therefore are forced to play more VFL players can apply for special consideration under the salary cap.

Pleasingly, AFL Victoria has not encountered any problems with salary cap issues. Simply, clubs play its players what they can afford.
