Pick 8 : Essendon:

Dyson Heppell - 187cm 79Kg:

With so many areas with holes the Bumblings are trying to address one of their biggest weaknesses = mid field by selecting Heppell. Positive results at the Draft camp in the following categories "Clean Hand Test" - scored 28/30 tying with Josh Caddy in first as well as coming third in the "running vertical jump" with a recored jump of 86cm. Won the 2010 Morrish Medal. Is considered to have good leadership qualities. Can also play of the HB Flank

I'm looking forward to seeing hiw early Gorriage, Lynch and Darling go. I'm surprized no one has picked up any of these three yet. I'm assuming that every club values the quality of the midfielders well ahead of the KPP's in thsi year talent pool. I think the actually clubs will follow a very similar line at the actual draft this year also.

Pic 17 seems a long, long way away. So I won't set my sights too high and aim for any player who's compared on BF to a young Jordan McMahon.  ;D

It's more a midfielders draft and apart from GC I think the bottom clubs need mids anyway whereas those clubs with picks in the teens are looking for KPPs (Melb, Carl & Haw) to fill holes in their "structures".

From what I understand two time all Australia u18 team. You expect he can play a bit. Be in wing or forward

12. Melbourne - Lucas Cook (North Ballarat Rebels, 03/03/1992, 196cm, 81kg)

Tempting to go best available tall and grab mobile ruckman Daniel Gorringe at this pick but the Dees already have four ruckmen - Gawn, Spencer, Fitzgerald and Jamar - on their list yet only have Watts as a mid-190s forward hence their reliance on 30-year old Brad Green as their leading goalkicker. So I went for Lucas Cook to partner Watts up forward once he develops for the next decade.

Cook kicked 9 goals in the U18 champs including 4 against Vic Metro at the MCG. He also averaged 14 possies a game so he can get his hands on the footy. He also kicked 26 goals from 11 games in the TAC Cup with a bag of 6 against Bendigo and 3 goals in his one-off VFL game for the North Ballarat Roosters back in May this year. Cook is a good mark and is quick for his size. He also finished top 10 at the draft camp for both the 3km time trial (endurance) and in the kicking assessment. He'll need a couple of years to bulk up but other than that he has all the qualities needed to be a quality key forward in the AFL.

ps. He'll be replacing Brad Miller on the Dees' list with no insurance required :whistle

Darling is hardly a mid.
That's the question mark on him at 190cm. Is Darling potentially the next Pavlich (who over his career could/can play key forward as well as spend time in the midfield) or is Darling that in-betweener height who can do neither well enough at AFL level?

Interested to hear Bents' view.

Not a massive rush to get through the 1st round as it will be best if we know which teams are using their compensation picks before we continue.
