Mark Ricciuto says Richmond's inability to stop the rot raises questions about leadership

Former Adelaide Crows champion and AFL Hall of Fame inductee Mark Ricciuto believes Richmond's second-half capitulation to Essendon exposed the Tigers' lack of on-field leadership.

Ricciuto, a guest panellist on Fox Sports' On The Couch program on Monday night, said questions had to be asked about the Tigers after they coughed up 10 consecutive goals to Essendon on the back of a 103-point drubbing at the hands of Carlton the previous weekend.

"They've been disappointing for a few weeks now," the eight-time All-Australian said.

"You do stop trying when you get beaten by 100 points, (because) Carlton are not a 100-point better side than Richmond. So they've got some issues in leadership.

"I would've thought they might have rebounded even better on the weekend, but their second half just dropped right away."

Regular panellist Mike Sheahan went further by identifying Richmond's dual best-and-fairest winner, Brett Deledio, as a high-profile offender.

"He spectates too much," Sheahan said.

"He's the second-most experienced player in that team (behind skipper Chris Newman) and almost the most talented. He's got to impose himself more."

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy, however, was reluctant to criticise Deledio, saying the gifted utility is unfairly maligned and rarely given credit for his good performances.

I wouldn't call King a leader. Maybe a spiritual leader in that he sets a standard with his one %'s and hear but not his skill and consistency. Jack has barely showed leadership in the last month berating teammates and sulking on the ground.
Our most consistent player in the last six weeks during our form slump has been Cotch. Hasn't dropped his head and has continued to put in even if the result is going against us. That to me shows leadership and courage.
IMHO anyone can be a good leader when things are falling your way but its when things don't fall your way where you see passengers take their seats and leaders emerge and to me Cotch is a leader.

Lids is the easiest target to the likes of Mike and co.

Our leadership group is

Newman - Capt - was poor on the leadership front on Sat night

Foley - VC - seems to be not under the microscope at all when it comes to the lack of leadership discussion. Why? And sorry I can't buy this "he's been out of footy nearly 2 years"

Lids - DVC - until he copped the whack to the throat thought he was very good. I still think leadership wise he hasn't been any worse than our captain the last few weeks

Cotch - DVC - best of the leaders Sat night

Jackson -  I will be honest I have never really understood why he is actually in the leadership group

Reiwoldt - a bit like Jackson not sure why, but so out of form we shouldnt' be worrying about the leadership side of things just need him to get the pill

Sadly because he's another investment in mediocrity.
His vibe on field is one of survival and not of the uplifting qualities associated with leadership.

Agree with Tuckerbag. We need someone to lead from the front when we are under the pump. Someone you can stand up when things are going bad. Foley and Jackson are not leadership material. Given the way Cotchin has stood up he should be included in the leadership group. All the good teams have a spread of good leaders and are not just relying on their respective captains to lift them.
