Actually Graham was the best. Killed it in fact

He was up against two very poor opponents but must admit he looked a hell of allot better than he ever did with us!!

Two very poor opponents? Poppycock. Trengove has been in a squad of 40 for AA and has won a B&F. Westhoff is very good around the ground and he (Gus) murdered Lobbe early on too. For him to hold his own around the ground against Trengove and Westhoff is a great effort in that heat. I expected him to have a heart attack at some point. He dominated the stoppages

Trengove averages 3.2 ho per game in 4 seasons and Westhoff 1.8 ho over 6 seasons.
Yep they both aren't ruckmen.

We tried to poach Trengove to be another tall defender for us a couple of years ago. At 197cm which is a fraction too short for a ruckman (he doesn't have a NicNat leap), CHB is his position.

A NicNat leap? Other than Howie, who the hell in Australia can jump like him? Troy Simmonds wouldn't be 197cm and he was a solid ruckman for a number of years. Jeff White was close to the best ruck in the comp and he was shorter than Richo. Trengove can ruck. There would be no debate here if it wasn't a former whipping boy of ours who kicked his arse yesterday.

I've moved the Graham discussion from the NAB Cup thread to here.

Should have had its own topic as Trengove has nothing to do with Graham's appreciation thread ;D

What heights ruckmen were in the past doesn't relate to footy now (Roy Wright was only Jacko's height - 188cm - when he won two Brownlows). Footy has changed so much even over just the past 5 years. 197cm is too short for a full-time ruck now unless you have some incredibly freakish leap. Most full-time rucks these days are 200cm or above and the new rules will only further favour the taller ruckmen. So while I don't rate Gus as a AFL footballer, there is no doubt he is definitely ruckman size at 201cm tall whereas Trengove is not. At best Trengove could do follower roles and throw-ins. No way he is or will be a genuine centrebounce ruckman.

He's a CHB. He was drafted as a ruck that could play KP at either end. Turns out he was a poo ruck and forward but an excellent CHB. Having said that, if he was forced to play and entire game in the centre against Graham, he'd be on top by the end of the day. Too aggressive and competitive to let the turtle triumph.

You're talking about a guy who finished up 50+ years ago. How tall is Stefan Martin? Trengove has played good football in the ruck. You're saying blokes under 200cm can't play in the ruck due to centre bounces. Really. How many centre bounces are there per game? If I were a betting man I would say Jackson has a better leap than most who are taller. At worst he loses the hitout count (but due to his aggressiveness he will make a great contest + win a fair share of his own) but easily beats any beanpole around the ground.  If you only judge ruckman on how many hitouts they win at a centre bounce then you'll miss blokes who are very good around the ground.

Mighty on average our race has grown much taller since those times and of course we lost a lot of our six footers in the two world wars
