Dimma's latest dissection - the win over Port ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-05-27/dimmas-dissection-rnd-8

Q. How have we managed to win the past two games despite losing the inside 50 count? Surely this is an important stat?

Dimma: Yes it's an important stat to us. A couple of reasons for why we lost the inside 50 count on the weekend - (i) Port won the centre clearances comprehensively so they got a few clear first entries out of the middle; (ii) our scoring efficiency inside 50 has improved. We're now top 8 for F50 efficiency. So we didn't have/need the repeated entries to kick a goal as a result. We need to work on and win the centre clearances against Essendon.

Q. Tackling over the past two weeks have become better. Do you think this has had much impact in our turnaround?

Dimma: It has improved but it's more the intensity from the guys we've brought in - Taylor Hunt had 7 tackles; Shaun Grigg, who is in career best form, had 5-6 tackles as did Ben Griffiths. What we've found is the more speed we've brought into the side (eg: McIntosh, Menadue), these guys can cover the ground more and faster so we're getting better results from our tackling numbers. In saying that, Port are a high stoppage side which lends itself to a game of more tackling.

Over the past two weeks, we've won both the contested footy and tackling count. If you do that then you win games 80% of the time. We want this to continue obviously and we've done a lot of work on this but it's more to do with the defensive systems Ross Smith has brought in. Not only are we tackling well but we are keeping sides to low scores.

Q. Can you tell us your impressions of the rise and rise of Kamdyn McIntosh?

Dimma: He's been in the system for 3-4 years and been unfortunate with respect to injuries. He's now finally getting a fantastic run at it this year. What a number of fans don't see is his work off the ball which we reward as coaches. Kamdyn's become a very important player. Credits Chocco, Tim Clarke and the development coaches who have put a lot of work with Kamdyn. The great news is we've got similar players coming through. Already seen Menadue and Corey Ellis debut this year. We're impressed with Jason Castagna who played well again in the VFL; unfortunate is out for 2 weeks with an ankle. We've had the most debuts this year and they've all shown something.

-----------------

On the Essendon game - we're looking forward to it. Haven't won a Dreamtime game for 4-5 years so we want to buck the trend there. Get there and get behind us and have a great night.

Dimma's dissection for the round 9 win over Essendon ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-06-03/dimmas-dissection-r9

----------------------------------------------------------------

Q. I think Brett Deledio has found his position as a forward that sometimes plays mid. Why do you think he excels at this position?

Dimma:
Brett is one of those players who is difficult to match up on. He's got incredible speed, he's a fantastic contested mark and also an incredibly smart player. He has always been a player who found the footy in an uncontested situation but one of the reasons his game has gone to another level in the past 12-18 months is his contested game has also improved. He doesn't get the recognition and plaudits for the quality footballer he is from the media and at times from myself - I don't give him enough credit. He's a very important player and no doubt when he comes back into the side he improves us - not only because he's a quality player but due to the flexible positions he can play, be it deep in the goalsquare; into the midfield; across half-forward. He's been a very good player for us this year. Probably wished he could kick that goal in the third term which would've pushed our lead out to a more managable level. He's had a terrific year thus far even though he's missed a number of games but the games he has played have been high quality.

Q. Whilst Essendon looked dangerous at times with their marking inside forward 50, we did manage to keep them below their season average. Do you think we have finally got the back 6 mix right?

Dimma:
They only took 10 marks inside F50 which is on their season average. What hurt us was they took 5 contested marks. The previous highest we've conceded was 4 and we're one of the better sides at not conceding contested marks. So to give up 5 was disappointing. Got to give credit to Carlisle who we thought was outstanding. Overall though, we thought our defence stood strong. We've got more a Back 7 with Hunt, Houli and Vlastuin coming off the bench. We're pleased with how they're going but we still feel they have room for improvement. What is great about the footy club at the moment, is you look at guys like Grimes and Batchelor really stood up and played some hard, tough footy and they're finally getting some consistency in their bodies to make sure they are regular best 22 players. So our Back 7 has done a terrific job thus far. They are going to have no bigger test than against Fremantle this Friday.

Q. Do you think Shane Edwards should be in the first All-Australian squad when it's announced?

Dimma:
I think Shane is a terrific talent. He can do things not many other players can. What he can do, for a player of his size, is win contested footy. He is averaging 10 contested possessions per game which is outstanding. [Dimma shows vision of Titch at HF waiting for the right pass to Grigg inside F50] Three years ago he was rushing his disposals and making errors. He still does that now and then [Dimma laughs] but he's an outstanding talent. Fair to say, he's improved every year since Dimma has been coach which we are very pleased with. He would be very close to an All-Australia top 40 spot at this stage. He's still got some upside for us as he could kick a few more goals. He's outstanding in the middle of the ground but we feel he can contribute a bit more on the goal front. What he does do is create goals for others and a measure of a good player for mine is how good you make others around you and he is one of those players. That mark on the HBF/wing late in the game was crucial. He's been an outstanding player for us thus far and we hope that continues to help our march up the ladder.

------------------

* Wish us luck on the weekend. I'm very confident in our players that we have the game to take it up to the Dockers. It's going to be a big test but we're looking forward to it.

Dimma's dissection for the round 10 win over Fremantle

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-06-11/dimmas-dissection-r10

----------------------------------------------------------------

Q. It appears more than a coincidence that the Tigers play well on the road. Without giving secrets away, is there a factor behind this, a strategy or a process that focuses the group on the challenge at hand OR they just enjoy the road trip?

Dimma:
You're right, we've had a good record interstate over the past 2-3 years. We do follow the exact process we use week in, week out with our travel. We fly late, we train, have dinner and then basically go to bed; then up the next day and play. It's worked really well for us. Our sports science staff work incredibly hard with the players to make sure they're hydrated, they get enough sleep and their nutrition is spot on as well. We generally have a meeting over there on the day of the game which keeps our players in good stead. We're really pleased with the guys' ability to travel. It's really important as those interstate matches are effectively 8 point games as you're not expected to win the majority of them. So for us to beat Brisbane, Port and Freo has been a really good result for us thus far.

Q. The move of Steve Morris forward has been controversial from our side of the fence. A little more hungry on Friday night and he might have kicked three or four goals. Then you switched him back in Q4, why?

Dimma:
It has been a move that, at times, has attracted attention from the media and fans, but what we felt we needed up forward 50 was a defensive presence and Steve Morris gives us that in spades. His ability to create turnovers which we score off is very good - one of the highest at our footy club. He promotes great endeavour and intensity inside that forward 50. You're exactly right, we had to send a message at one stage to stop being a little too unselfish. There was probably three stages where he could've kicked a goal. He got the ball out 20m from goal and then ran 30m the wrong way to give off a handball to a teammate when he should have had a shot at goal. Then there was one where he tried to snap around his body a 20m pass when he was probably entitled to have a shot also. We've been pleased with is effort. We break the game down in stages - his ability to defend has been good; his ability to compete has been good; probably from an offence point of view, he has been below what we would've liked but we're seeing some trending upwards in that. He had a really good game on the weekend and we expect that to continue. If whe can get 2-3 goals for us then that's a massive result for us. So overall, it's trending in the right direction.

Q. Looks like the 3 talls are starting to click. Could we see Ty, Liam and Griff all in the side with Jack further up the field?

Dimma:
Not at this stage from our point of view. Although, they are different types of players - Liam is more like Jack in that he has the ability to go down the ground and capable at ground level. His contested marking probably has to improve from that point of view. We don't see those four playing in the same side at this stage. The three talls worked really well on the weekend. Is it going to work going forward? We hope so. We think it provides us with a great target inside forward 50. It allows Jack more freedom up the ground. You only need to look at his workrate where he covered 13km on the weekend which is a great result for us. He's not only providing a target across half-forward but his ball use inside forward 50 is very good also and he has managed to chip in with a couple of goals of his own. I thought Ty and Griff were terrific at various stages throughout the game and, more importantly, hitting the scoreboard with Ty kicking three important goals and Griff two (plus he also missed what should have been a soda on the night). Pleasing for us they are providing good defensive pressure and hitting the scoreboard.

Q. A few times in the past weeks, we've not taken the ball over the boundary when we should have. It can be costly. Should we be putting more focus on our stoppages play and causing more throw-ins?

Dimma:
[Laughs while reading the question, so it must have been right on the mark].

You make a great point. You were lucky you weren't privy to the box conversation where we were 1mm from the boundary on defensive 50, kept it in and we turned it over costing us a goal. You're right, it's happened a few times in recent weeks. We've probably been disappointed with that phase of our play. One thing that did go against us was we were playing against a side with Sandilands and Fyfe who are both very good stoppage-wise. So we probably didn't want to create too many stoppages as we knew it would come. From our point of view, it wasn't a stoppage focus game but we had to make sure we killed that dangerous ball in a couple of situations. We also made a couple of goal-line errors as well. Look, it is something we focus on and something we continue to improve and it's our job as coaches to make sure that happens.

-------------------------------------

* The plan was carried out. Our players were not only terrific in their intensity and effort but also their diligence in carrying out the plan to beat Freo. Credit to the players and the leaders.

* It was a good week. Always good to win. From our point of view, we're 6-4 with still an enormous challenge in front of us. We still feel we have a lot of improvement left in front of us. We'll enjoy the week off but our players will train both days this weekend.

Dimma's dissection for the round 13 win over the Swans ...

* Dimma agreed that last Friday night was Miles' best game for the year. Praised Miles' distribution of the footy and his ability to not own tackle and win the contested footy but to be used to close down a opponent who was getting too much of the ball (eg: moved onto Parker).

* Dimma said while there was an element of fire and brimstone at half-time, there's an expectation/temptation to throw the magnets around when you're 32 points down. In reality, we just reset and focused on getting back to the way we play best (winning contested footy) and our leaders standing up. We had few contributors in the first half but everyone contributed after half-time.

* Rance won 12 possession gains (either from beating his direct opponent or collecting the loose ball and clearing it out of defence). When your full-back holds the opposition's best player to two goals while your full forward kicks 6 then that goes a long way to winning the game. Jack had a great game on Teddy Richards who we rate highly. Richards like defending closer to goal and Jack is very good at pushing up and then running back into space. It's worth it to spend time just looking at Jack's movements for 5-10 minutes during a game to see his workrate.

Dimma's dissection for the round 14 win over the Giants ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2012-07-07/dimmas-dissection-round-14

* We didn't play incredibly well. We did okay in facets and credit to the Giants who close down our space. Took until the last quarter for us to click and go on all 8 cylinders. An ugly win but a mature win from our perspective.

* The spray at 3/4 time isn't something you do that often. Behind closed doors you are forthright and honest but to make it so public isn't something Dimma likes. Generally, it means we're doing something we shouldn't be doing which is what happened on the weekend. We weren't hard enough and we were losing critical contests either going down the line or through poor effort. So the spray was making that clear and challenging the players to take the game to a new level. It had the desired effect on the day but the fact of the matter is, if I had to do that every week then we're not going to get the results we want. So, hopefully it's a one-off and we learn from it and play the style of footy that wins us games. More importantly, believe in ourselves and the process about getting the wins on the board. Dimma said he can't recreate the spray as he doesn't remember what he said lol.

* Handling 3rd man up at ruck contests? The rules are okay although a couple of times it's hard at time for the umpires to work out who are the rucks and who are coming in as a secondary ruck option. All up I think the umps are doing their job pretty well. We knew GWS would use a 3rd man up at ruck contests, so we set-up accordingly and we ended winning the clearances, or we set up for the turnover to win it our way. We didn't use a 3rd man up as we feel we lose a player doing it and we instead often bring in a player to get the ball moving our way. So all up we're quite happy. We've exploited the rule at stages, so we just live with it.

* Centre clearances - first game in a while we've won them (12-6) and we kicked two goals from them. How crucial were they to the result?
While centre clearances are important, it's the next disposal that is crucial. The number of poor kicks inside 50 from the centre we weren't happy with. Showed vision of kicks out of the centre clearances not going deep inside 50 and being marked by opposition defenders. While we kicked two goals, we were disappointed with the cleanliness. Of course, we got that belter from Shane Edwards in the last quarter which got the game back our way. Ivan got on top over the ruck the last couple of times so we're pleased with that part of the game. He's missing this week but we have some players to replace him and get the result this week. The centre bounce is important as far as getting the ball going your way both offensively and defensively. It hasn't been as strong a part of the game as past years but we are continuing to work on it and get the ball going our way.

Dimma's dissection for the round 23 win over the Roos ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-09-09/dimmas-dissection-r23

Dimma said this would be a blan dissection given we play the same team next week.

He mentioned we didn't play our way in the first half. We didn't come to play. There was one side hanging off thinking of finals next week, while the other was going flat chat with fringe players fighting for a spot in their best 22. That made for an even contest. In the second half, we got our game going.
