Will we finally beat the Blues round one?
« on: December 27, 2012, 08:41:52 AM »
In recent seasons we seem to have carried the weight of expectation into round 1 & have repeatedly come up short.  That has the potential to change this year with the Blues coming off an ordinary year and having appointed Mick Malthouse not only will their own club/supporters be expecting big things but the football world will have their eyes on Carlton to see if they adapt tot he new coach & his game plan.

With that in mind, we'll also be under focus as many punters/experts have predicted that we need to make finals & this is the perfect opportunity for us to kick start our 2013 campaign in a positive manner.  Finally breaking the round one hoodoo could set us up for a big year and get confidence sky rocketing - another loss (especially a close one) could/would be heart breaking.

So do we think that with our off season recruits and another preseason into the young fellers that we are ready to step up and announce ourselves to the comp by beating the old foe?

This is our best chance for 5 years. The Blues match up well on us usally so it won't be easy. Would love to beat them finally. A narrow loss wouldn't be the end of the world though. They are our toughest opponent and if we match them, that will be a good sign for 2013. A win would explode our membership sales  ;D

If both sides are at full strength we will struggle to win. Need Martin, lids and Cotch to have blinders to have a chance. Jack needs to pull a finger out too!

Struggle??? Geezus, have we improved at all??

We have a better centre line, better forwards and a better team, bigger, stronger and fitter than last year. This is a must win...NE ;D

Midfields are pretty equal. We just need to match their intensity

We firstly can't afford to have anymore of those one costly 'dead' quarter per game or even "10 minute patches" as Dimma calls them where we go totally to sleep, our intensity drops off and the opposition slam on a bag of goals in a short period.

To beat Carlton we'll need our lesser likes to step up so all is not left to Cotch, Lids and Jack to try and get us across the line. Round 1 this year, despite being outclassed for periods of the game, we were able to stay with Carlton to midway through the last quarter before we ran out of legs with too much left to too few and we got blown away in the final 10 minutes of the match. That's why we'll need a few of our 3-4 year youngsters to have breakout seasons along with our experienced types not falling away so we can spread the workload across our whole 22. In the past Carlton's second tier group have been far superior to ours. While our attention is on their A-graders Judd, Murphy and co., guys like Scotland, Simpson, Robinson & Carrazzo have hurt us big time through the middle of the ground while Waite always has his one-to-two good games per game against us  :banghead. Even a giant spud like Hampson got under our guard and kicked 3 goals  :scream.

The second meeting later on the year was a terrible game and so we can't judge anything from that. Both sides had a number of their better players out and second-rate spuds in  :help and so both did their best to lose the game and we ended up being just a fraction better at it  :P  :scream.

At this stage Carlton will go into the round 1 game as favourites. The only way we'll get respect and prove everyone else wrong is to win.

They are a year or two ahead of us in development. I hope I am wrong though! Also the new coach factor in their first game is against us.

agree with MT that we need to improve drastically on those "lapses" that have seen us fall away for 10 - 15 mins...those proved fatal in many of the close losses we had last season...hopefully the focus will be more on the Blues and how they fare under Malthouse and allow us to sneak under the guard slightly - that being said though, these are the games we need to win to make finals a) for our own belief and equally as important b) it's not just the 4 points you win yourself, it's the 4 points your opponent (who we'll be competing for finals spots with) doesn't get

i think we've got some more upside with a few new faces & hopefully the further development of some of our youngsters...yes, the Blues are a few years more advanced than us, but you really know what you are going to get with their side (as far as players and output - they will obviously have a slightly different game plan).

going in as confident as I have in a long time....
