For the first time in many a year, Richmond ($21/$26) will start the season at a shorter price to win the cup than St Kilda ($26/$34).

The Tigers are also shorter than North Melbourne ($31/$34), despite the Roos playing finals last season and the Tigers ending the year in twelfth spot with just 10 wins.

2013 - What's next? (Age)

Connolly saying we won't have it easy squeezing into the Eight...

What's next?

The Age

Season 2013 is already shaping as one of the most competitive we have seen, with precious little gap between the top few teams and a bigger than usual cluster of outsiders attempting to break into the top eight.

Hawthorn has been stung by its failure to win a premiership that seemed there for the taking, and will hit back hard. Sydney won't be going anywhere, while Collingwood and Geelong remain determined to prove their eras of success are an ongoing concern, not history.

The Western Australian bloc of West Coast and Fremantle will continue to push hard, and there will be even greater expectations than usual on an improving Richmond, with the Tiger army as impatient as ever for long-promised returns.

The Tigers won't have it easy squeezing into the eight, though.
Carlton, under the guidance of Mick Malthouse, will be watched closely. On talent, the Blues are good enough to mix it with the top few.

There will be plenty of eyes on James Hird's Essendon, too. Last season the Bombers crashed spectacularly to injury and lapsed confidence, but their best is still imposing.

Not sure if I'm missing something, but what's the deal with the Blues? They still lack a key forward, and have the same lack of depth issues as last year under Ratten. They haven't upgraded their list in any way whatsoever or done anything to cover their deficiencies, yet a new coach means they'll stroll into finals?

If they make it ill apologise, but I'm sorry I think it's a crock of poo.

For mine, Adelaide are rated too highly. No way would I have them top 4 after what has happened with losing Tippett and the salary cap circus around it. Just from a structural point of view it has to imbalance their forward line with Walker now the sole main tall forward target. They also had a soft draw last year and were shown up in the finals as a result. North are the other ones who IMO will drop out for the same reason as the Crows (harder draw/exposed as pretenders in that elimination final). So that's at least two spots open. There's usually also a club that falls out that everyone preseason reckons are certs to make the finals (like Carlton last year). All you need is a bad run with injuries to key players, a couple of unexpected losses and a drop in team confidence and it can totally derail your season. So I'm predicting 2-3 changes to the top 8 this year. Hopefully we develop and mature further as a side this year and are one of the ins  :pray.
