Players ready to re-launch at every club

David Zita
Fox Sports
December 1st, 2021

It’s a team sport, but in the AFL there’s always at least one player who appears to be of vital importance to a side’s hopes on any given matchday.

Be it a change of club, poor form or injury, there’s a player at every club that could prove vital to the side’s successes (or lack thereof).

With that in mind, foxfooty.com.au set out to determine the player at every club who has the capacity to prove the biggest point of difference from this year to the 2022 season.

RICHMOND - Ivan Soldo

Whenever Soldo returns to the field in 2022, he’s set to have an immediate impact on how the Tigers shape up. He’ll be 26 and getting close to the peak of his powers, while the positional repercussions for Toby Nankervis will be great. Soldo’s ability at the centre bounces was missed when he went down with injury this year and his return allows Nankervis to drift forward or back before imposing himself on general play. With Mabior Chol and Callum Coleman-Jones now gone too, the fitness of Soldo has become even more paramount for the Tigers’ premiership hopes in 2022. Club great Matthew Richardson says Soldo is “a forgotten man outside of Richmond” and could be “plenty of value” to the club’s on-field fortunes.

Ivan was very good in the scratch match today. Best ruckman on the ground and pushed forward to kick two goals. Touchwood Soldo stays healthy as we and especially Nank (workload wise) missed him big time last year.

The most underated player from our premiership side hugely missed.

Go back and watch the 2019 and 2020 season he was matching with the best of the rucks.

The number one ruckman from every  side .

He’s referring to the scratch match I believe

Ivan Soldo’s return also gives the Tigers some flexibility in the big man stocks.

He hasn’t played since Round 17, 2020 and looked impressive in his return, going head to head with Nankervis at stages.

“He’s the forgotten man … he hasn’t played for 18 months now,” McQualter said. “He is only 25 years old, with lots of upside still.

For him, it is just great to play again and to get the confidence in his body again, and to get the relationship going again with Toby.

“I know they tried to belt each other today but going forward they will be working in tandem.”

With Balta fwd then to start the year big Ivan is the #1 ruckman for the reserves.
His job will be to force Nankervis out if the above structure works. Maybe we do a horses for courses job with them and by playing different weeks theyb get the breaks they need.

Well Nank can't really go a full season that's for sure. Needs a break here and there and IMO we should never pitch him against monster rucks by himself.

Balta can relieve but he won't match it with the genuine big ones like Soldo.

Great goal he kicked, didn't think he'd make the distance but he played like a big man indeed.
