1. Leadership personified from Deledio and Cotchin

Richmond has often been criticised for a perceived lack of on-field leadership in the past.

But with the game in the balance, it was skipper Trent Cotchin and vice-captain Brett Deledio who took the reins and delivered when it mattered most for the Tigers.

Cotchin had 11 disposals in a pulsating final term, working from contest to contest and leading from the front as a captain should do.

Deledio kicked two crucial goals in the final term and battled through the calf complaint that has limited him early this season.

It was the kind of individual efforts that Richmond has been crying out for after it started the season with two wins and four losses.

Deledio told Channel 7 after the game that the players were to blame for their sluggish start and that they all wanted to pull through for a memorable victory to get behind under-the-pump coach Damien Hardwick.

Hardwick said the leadership group had taken a lot of the team's meetings in the build-up to Sunday's match and challenged the group to respond after a 2-4 start to the season.

"To see them perform like they did today was really impressive," the coach said.

"The big thing for us is that needs to continue going forward."

Cotchin said it made a difference when the leadership group - which also includes defenders Troy Chaplin and Steven Morris - fired as one, but they were no more important than the young players brought in on Sunday.

The Tigers blooded debutants Liam McBean and Connor Menadue, while young midfielder Corey Ellis showed more encouraging signs with 13 possessions and three clearances.

"We had a number of younger guys stand up in crucial moments," Cotchin told AFL.com.au.

"Nick Vlastuin took one really great intercept mark and then went back and crunched a contest with Jesse White.

"That's the expectation of our players but to see it happening more consistently is a fantastic result. It makes you proud as a player.

"I'm really proud of the way the boys consistently worked themselves into the game."

There has been a lot written of late lauding the efforts of our leaders but much should be written of their inability to fire a shot on the big stage of Friday night footy in front of the faithful on our home deck. There's no excuse for under par performances expecting the second tier players to rise above when it's important the leaders set the standard week in week out. These are supposed to be the extension of the coach, the voice in action on field for all the rest to follow.

Our captain & all in field leaders should take a look at what Jay Schulz tweeted after the game he played.

Great examples of leaders leading in that last quarter and at the other end leaders letting their sides down.

Start of the last Nathan Jones nails the first goal of the quarter. Lifted all those around him

Few minutes later Hawkins has a shot 30-35 metres out almost directly in front. He misses. He's in the leadership group down there. Shocking miss, they needed that goal, he let his side down. Less 10 minutes later, same scenario and Hawkins misses again.

Then after the Dees got out to 27 or so points at the centre bounce, Selwood gets the clearance runs to 50 and kicks it and it goes through. Lifted his side, they seemed to spark up. But guess what, Jones stands up again for Melb and lifts his players

WP I don't think we have the calibre of leader that can drag us out of a slump or turn a game round.I think when we draft or recruit this has to be near the top of what we need at our club.

I actually think our leaders can drag us along, they showed they could the 4 games prior to this week. The Port game, 3rd qtr was the perfect example. But in that game we had the lead. Friday when the run on came and we lost the lead our leaders disappeared

Thats what I mean when I say our leaders need take their leadership to the next level. They need to start marshalling and dragging during run ons ... At the moment it is costing us

I think we have sufficient leaders. I remember Rance taking on the entire Sydney forward line to get us through to the elim final. I also recall dustin martin tearing apart the competition in the first half of last year when the rest of the team was crap.

Cotchin had an off day. But so does Selwood (rnd 7 against sydney, rnd 9 against west coast)
Deledio did OK.
Maric got pantsed.

I would love Deledio and Cotchin to kick 3 goals and get 31 touches like Martin did.

but when that doesn't happen, I expect Kamdyn to get more than 4 possessions for the entire match. Or Ben Griffiths/TV to take more than 1 mark inside 50 for the entire match.

The fact of the matter is if we are to ever be a top 4 side, the 2nd tier has to fire

I don't understand why people feel the need to excuse the under par performances by our so called leadership group on Friday night.
The point is that the leaders are supposed to be leaders getting paid the big $$$$ to be an extension of the coach in action on the field and an example for the rest of the team to follow. This shouldn't be the exception but the norm of what's expected.

It shouldn't be up to Martin or McIntosh to lead the way even though they have in the past.

There's no excuse for all of our leaders to be so bad in one game and the onus is on Cotchin & the others to make sure this doesn't happen. As Chaplin said himself, "we need to grow up!"

That Cotchin goal just changed everything. Lifted the side and he just went from there. Was relentless in his attack on the ball. Was fighting 3-4 Swans at some stages in the third and winning the disputed footy. The team apprpriately followed suit. Should be the norm. Awesome stuff.
