RICHMOND

If his past two seasons hadn't been cruelled by injury, key defender David Astbury would be an important cog in the Tigers' back six. Knee, foot and hamstring injuries have seen others go past him, however, and he is now being trialled as a forward in the VFL. Contracted to the end of 2016, Astbury certainly has currency, but the question is does he have value to the Tigers in a premiership push?

With two games in four seasons, athletic tall defender Todd Elton, who signed a one-year contract for 2015, is also in a vulnerable position.

Attacking defender Matt Dea is yet to play in 2015, despite being available, and others may have gone past him in the Tigers' pecking order. He also signed a one-year contract for 2015 and has played 31 games in six seasons.

Ricky Petterd hasn't had the good fortune of being available, with a foot injury sidelining him since round three. The 26-year-old is coming out of contract this season and had spent time in the VFL in each of the past two seasons.

I doubt it was his intention to get injured and spend this season on the sidelines. Also doubt he is on huge coin

It is an Extremely nasty foot injury he has, very nasty. One that requires patience to get right.

For memory this is the first extended run he has had on the injured list since he has been at Richmond.

He does some good things sometimes and is better than some. IMO we could do a lot worse and he fills a vital part of our defensive structure.

Just a question but who on our current list would you replace him with. We could always get Luke McGuane back??

Astbury might be a dud

Or him and Elton might go to other clubs and do well like Schultz

Thursfield and Moore were better than Chaplin

Mcgaune was terrible but at least he had mobility

Otherwise we'd be drafting 18 yos to replace them who won't be ready.

  Where did I say it was his intention? Nice way to twist things. Anything above rookie wage is too much for him.

First extended run maybe, but he was coming in and out of team numerous times due different injuries here and there. As I said, no problem with having him when he was a rookie but I never wanted him on our main list. Even worse that he has been injured for so long.

Players’ careers on the line during second half of 2015 AFL season

Matt Dea was given a lifeline at the end of last season, signing a one-year deal to remain at the Tigers. Since then, however, the defender hasn’t played a game for Richmond, despite being available for selection and averaging solid numbers in the VFL (17 disposals, five marks and three rebound 50s from 10 games). With just 31 games to his name in six seasons, it seems the Tigers are unlikely to offer Dea another contract.

End of the line? Which AFL players could be about to retire

Chris Newman, clearly the Tigers’ oldest player at 33, says he will make a decision at the end of the season about whether to go again in 2016. “I’m not really thinking about it too much, just trying to play my role for the team and stay in there for as long as possible,” he said two weeks ago. “We’ll see how the year pans out and I’ll make the decision.” Averaging 11 disposals a game and battling soft-tissue injuries, it might be hard to make a case for another year.

Speaking of injuries, Nathan Foley has had yet another year destroyed by them. He will be 30 in a month and is out of contract at the end of the season.

Surely Dea is due to pickup another contract I mean he's got a basketball background and is apparently our back flank Pendelbury.....and he's got number 7 on his back so he must be good.
