Um could it be it's because we're a club based in inner city Melbourne yet were the only Melbourne club that didn't get a zone in the Melbourne area, the largest talent pool in a football playing state in Australia? You seriously think we wouldn't have wanted one?  Footscray for example, not only got the Western Suburbs but also S/W Victoria and Ballarat. Hawthorn -struggling that they are- got  Eastern Melbourne, Gippsland & a zone in the NT ffs.....come on WP....are you Gill McLachlan or just his PR secretary?

They got the area they wanted, so why the angst?

I really don't get it.

Think the question is or should be can we; will we do this well? Thats the most important thing IMHO

You can have whatever area you like but that doesn't guarantee your academy is going to be successful

Isn't the RFC's ability to create a successful academy that produces AFL quality palyers a bit more important than which area said players come from?

Or are people going to blame the region if they get wrong?

The Mildura/Mallee region has a significant Indigenous population but, according to Michael Gleeson in The Age, most now play Soccer.

... soccer became the sport of choice for indigenous kids in the Mildura area. It is now more commonly played there than AFL, rugby league or than basketball.

Around most parts of Australia, AFL has a stranglehold on the sporting interest of indigenous communities. Where AFL doesn't dominate, NRL has its place. In most parts, basketball is strong and soccer is the less popular game. Not in the Mallee.

Why do the Hawks get a zone in the Nt when they already have a presence in Tassie?

A serious focus on the indigenous centre, yet we don't have a zone in the NT.

In terms of population growth we picked probably the worst most stagnant area.

In the meantime Melbourne suburbs continue to grow, particularly in the south eastern, western and northern corridors.

If this is the sort of latent astuteness at the club then no wonder we are so poo

SUNRAYSIA will again be zoned to the Richmond Football Club by the Australian Football League.

This week the AFL briefed staff from Victorian-based clubs on the the final stage of establishing Next Generation AFL Club Academies this year with the objective of attracting indigenous and multicultural boys and girls who are not currently playing football or are underrepresented in the AFL.

Under the proposed zoning, Sunraysia would come under Richmond’s zone, which yielded the Tigers players such as Dale “Flea” Weightman until the late 1980s, when country zoning was abolished.

Also Essendon, Geelong, Melbourne, Hawthorn and Collingwood get access to Aboriginal communities that are committed followers and players of AFL, and Richmond get Northern Victoria where these communities play soccer.

I don't think the indigenous blokes who come down from the NT during our winter to play footy in Nthn Victoria are coming down to play soccer.

And I really do think people are missing the fact these academies are not just for indigenous kids but other kids in the region.

Club currently has strong links with the idigneous communties in Nthn Vic. the same communities that have a equally strong link to Aussie rules footy.

It's been well reported in the press that Lovett-Murray one of the banned essendon 34, cannot coach the indigneous team in Shepparton this year.... huge indigneous talent pool in Northern Victoria and along the Murray

SUNRAYSIA’S finest homegrown VFL/AFL export says he would like to see zones reintroduced by the Australian Football League.

Richmond Football Club Team of the Century member, AFL and club hall of famer, VFL premiership player and former Victorian captain Dale Weightman, who was picked up by the Tigers through their zone alignment with Sunraysia in the 1970s, says returning to the zone system that was abolished in favour of the AFL draft would be “a great idea” for places like ­Mildura.

“Where the national competition is now, I think places like ­Mildura, which is pretty isolated, get spasmodic representation of clubs going to the area every now and then,” he said.

"If clubs can help attract and develop some talent that would be under-represented and not normally find its way into the AFL pathway then they will have the ability to receive some incentive for that similar to the bidding system used for the northern academies."

What i take from this is that clubs will need to develop players that otherwise wouldnt play football.  Anyone already playing football for a local club etc (although could be enticed into joining the academy) would go into the draft as per normal.  Someone like Maurice Rioli Jnr for example thats already playing for a local club wouldnt necessarily be part of Essendon's platform. Or am i reading this completely wrong?
