With all those banging on about bringing in Garthwaite, can someone please tell me how he’s travelling with his injury, match fitness and how he went in the VFL the other day?

Played well however received a cork to the left leg during the 3rd. Not sure about the extent or if it will keep him out. If not, definitely plays in seniors next week.

A nine day break will help him a bit too.

Reckon they will do everything they can to get right for this game

With Grimes out we need him

Can’t believe we are relying on a two gamer so badly.

  :thumbsup

People need to remember the fact he's still a kid. Not going to solve all our problems and TBH, there are going to be times where he is comprehensively beaten by a forward. He's still developing. We need the kid but it's not as if his inclusion is going to be some kind of miracle

We're relying on him because two gamer or not , he's pretty much the only genuine/specialist tall defender back up with any kind of exposed AFL form in that position that we've got atm and we need to start getting more games into him..... :shh

Can’t believe we are relying on a two gamer so badly.

It exposes the poor list management by our match committee last year when they chose to play injured, underdone or underperforming players as opposed to promoting any of their understudies from the seconds.

I know he might only have two games at senior level, but he is in his third year of the system. He has been learning his craft with less pressure in the twos. Nothing wrong with expecting him now to step up. There is a huge difference between a two game first year defender and a two game third year defender.

It doesn’t matter how many games he’s played, is he our best option? Yes he is
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Leppa's review of Garth's 2019 so far:

His first five AFL games of 2019

"He's looked really good. He's got that highly defensive mindset and he's still slowly building in his offensive component of his game. He's a big spoiler as we know and likes to glue to his opposition, so they're always trustworthy players."

His huge distance covered in games (15.8km average for his past four games)

"There's always one defender, usually your tallest key, that plays 100 per cent of the game and he's it for us. They tend to build the kilometres mostly based off the the time they play, they probably play 10 per cent longer than most other players. There is a lot of that sweeping running where you're pushing up the ground and then going left to right, and a lot of kilometres getting built from a lot of possessions but it does definitely secure our defence well."

His number one rank at the Club for spoils

"He's not so much our intercept possession-type player, but he's the one that plays behind, gets the spoil done and gets some distance for our offence to rebound. He's slowly building the offensive part of his game but that will come when he learns some smarter positioning on the ground and more aggressive positioning, but we're hopeful that will build over time."

Experience playing on opposition sides' key forwards

"You put him on a guy like Ben Brown (North Melbourne) last week and give him the big job but you're kind of hopeful that the support around him, like Astbury and Grimes, can come in and give him that extra support. Because (Garthwaite's) our most defensive player, we think giving him the bigger jobs is a good idea."

Young defender Ryan Garthwaite (eight games) will once again have a formidable opponent in either Taylor Walker or Josh Jenkins after lining up on Tom Hawkins.

"'Garthy', to me, he's 20 years of age playing against some of the best forwards in the competition, and you don't often get to do that at the age of 20 in a side like ours," Hardwick said.

"We're really confident he's learning some things, he played better again on the weekend and he's certainly taken his game to a higher level every time he takes to the park.

"We look at it now in isolation, we sit there and go, 'he's probably getting beaten at stages,' but the reality is, it's only going to help in the long term, and it'll certainly help us in the long term as well."

Very undersized tonight down back. Midfield will lower their colours too.

Expect another paddlin' IMO.

Never thought I'd say this but I wish Astbury was playing to man up on Jenkins - the bloke will probably kick a bag playing on our midget backline...
