Richmond intra-club: Liam Baker watches from sidelines after surgery, Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper, Kaelan Bradtke

Herald Sun
18 February 2023

Richmond hit the track for their intra-club today in beautiful sunny conditions at Punt Road. While a few faces were missing, there were still plenty of stars on show to excite the Tiger army.

TERRIFIC TARANTO

Richmond ranked a lowly 15th in clearance differential last year, but the additions of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper through the trade period are sure to help turn those numbers around.

Taranto was seemingly everywhere during some match simulation at training on Saturday, finding plenty of ball through the midfield and using it well when he did win it.

The former Greater Western Sydney gun runs hard and continually gets to the right places to impact the contest.

Taranto was played as a forward at times during his six seasons with the Giants and has shown he is able to hit the scoreboard, but the Tigers seem set on using him as a permanent midfielder this season.

Having been carefully managed over the off-season, fellow former Giant Hopper was also in the thick of the action through the midfield on Saturday.

“They’re elite players and they’re only going to help us around the stoppage and contest,” assistant coach Xavier Clarke said.

“They’ve been terrific.”

THE NEW ‘KB’

Excitement is growing around Kaelan Bradtke, just days after he was signed on to fill Richmond’s final list spot through the AFL’s Supplemental Selection Period.

Plucked from Corowa-Rutherglen in the Ovens and Murray Football League, the 195cm forward is quickly making his mark at Punt Rd.

A solid body, Bradtke created a contest and crashed some packs at training on Saturday, while his running ability also caught the eye.

“It’s a great story and it’s a credit to him,” Clarke said.

“He’s a self-driver, he’s always in the offices watching vision and trying to improve.

“If he continues to improve, anything can happen, really.”

DUSTY PRIMED

Brownlow Medal winner Dustin Martin was looking as sharp as ever as he took lead-up marks, wove between opponents and snapped goals at training on Saturday.

Martin again played forward during match simulation, in a first-choice attacking end that also included Jack Riewoldt, Ben Miller, Shai Bolton, Maurice Rioli Jnr and Trent Cotchin.

After playing just nine games due to injury and personal reasons last year, Martin has been one of the standouts on the training track across summer.

“He hasn’t missed a session this whole pre-season,” Clarke said.

“So he’s been looking as dynamic as he’s ever been and he’s been training really well.”

STAY TUNED

A rookie selection in last year’s draft has been catching the attention of his coaches after a “really impressive” summer.

Tylar Young played 14 games for Richmond’s VFL side last year, before the 196cm key defender won a spot on the AFL list after being snapped up at pick 26 in the rookie draft.

With fellow key defender Josh Gibcus sidelined with a hamstring injury for the early part of the season, Young could find himself in the frame to earn an early senior opportunity in assistant coach Ben Rutten’s backline.

“He’s shown some great things in training so if he continues to go on the path he’s going, he probably will play senior footy at some point throughout this year,” Clarke said of Young.

“Truck’s got a bit of a headache to select his best side down there.”

Noah Balta is poised to play a more permanent role in defender this year after being used as a forward at times last season, while veterans Robbie Tarrant and Dylan Grimes are training well and will remain mainstays down back.

STAR TIGER SITS OUT INTRA-CLUB AFTER SURGERY

Richmond utility Liam Baker will be racing the clock to be fit for the Tigers’ season opener against Carlton after having surgery to remove his appendix this week.

Baker watched on from a seat in the grandstand as his teammates were put through their paces at training on Saturday morning, just 26 days out from Round 1.

However, the 25-year-old tough nut is expected to resume light training duties next week.

“He woke up feeling pretty sore in the stomach over the weekend and had it investigated and unfortunately he had to have his appendix out,” Richmond assistant coach Xavier Clarke said.

“But Bakes is pretty tough and he’s going to be ready for Round 1, there’s no doubt. We’ve all seen the way he plays. If he had his way he’d probably be out there training (on Saturday). But he’ll rest up and he’ll be fine in the coming weeks.”

The Tigers expect Baker to miss next week’s practice match against North Melbourne, but he could still play some game time in their official pre-season hitout against Melbourne the following week.

Forward Jason Castagna and defender Nathan Broad were both restricted to running duties on Saturday as they recover from recent hamstring complaints but are expected to be available for Round 1.

Key forward Tom Lynch (foot) also remains on track to face off against the Blues despite again sitting out match simulation in favour of some running drills.

“He’s getting back gradually into training,” Clarke said of Lynch.

“Last week he started drip-feeding into some of our drills and again today. He should be fully into training next week so he’ll be available for Round 1. Does he play some of our scratch matches? We’re not sure yet. We’ll work with our medical team and see what that looks like in terms of a load for him.”

Tigers midfielder Jack Graham (toe), ruckman Ivan Soldo (back soreness) and defender Josh Gibcus (hamstring) were others to sit out match simulation.

My 1st crack a training report so here are some takeways from today. it was a drills based session as opposed to a full on match sim, which as above was good to see what we are working on specifically & is IMO better than having a match where "probables" smash the "possibles" by 10+ goals.

Rehab - Colina, Broad (who looked like a midget while doing laps alongside Colina) Laps for all consisted of jogging & sprinting between cones from what i could tell. Bauer was in a moon boot as is Smith, Gibcus & George were the only 2 who didn't do any running at all as well as the guys in moon boots (Smith & Bauer). Lynch & Sonz did the warmup with the main group but were on light duties thereafter with Graham & Soldo, they were doing sprints etc so looks more a management thing than anything else. I got the scoop from Sonz himself, he's got a hip flexor strain but said he's not too far away & looked to be moving well. Campbell also in rehab but was doing a lot of running so it can't be a major issue keeping him out. Lynch/Graham/Sonsie, for 1 drill were doing 50m kicks to top of the sqr for the the tall fwds Jack/Mill/Bradt to fist ball to the ground for the crumbers to do their thing.

Grimes & Prestia did around half the session with the main group then did laps thereafter so i'd say they are both easing back in & i got no idea if they'd play next week or not but being conservative i'd guess the Dees game would be the go for those 2.

Dusty - deserves his own section, a few sublime kicks, he'll prove a few haters wrong this yr just based on how he went today. with F50 entries he was often used as the player that kicks inside 50 & we all know what a weapon he can be in that role. Gave Tarrant a "don't argue", on another occasion he did a spin turn out of traffic inside 50 & gave off for a team mate for a goal. During a D50 to F50 drill which went for a goal as it went through Dusty had his own ball & kicked that through.

Stoppages - as mentioned above a heavy focus on around the ground stoppages for D50 & F50 into re-entry scenarios, at one stage here D.Rioli took an uncontested intercept mark about 70-80 from goal with Banks nearest to him, Dimma yelled "free kick to Banks for too high". Not sure if Dimma is angling for a gig an as ump post Coaching but he's just as good at pulling free kicks from you know where as the umps are themselves. he did pay a free to a Richmond player tho so they won't look at him but it was also against a Richmond player for nothing so who knows.

K.Bradtke - took a brilliant contested mark 1v1. Bodywork was sublime so i can see why he's been picked up, he has a lot to work with.

Also a shoutout to Biggie who took a few intercept marks & spoils, incl a contest where dusty had his man covered in a 1v1 & Biggie came in 3rd man up & smashed the ball over the line.

That's main takeaways, not doing full on match sim does make sense given it's a 6 day break till the Norf game.

Who's flying
Star recruit Tim Taranto had a tough 2022 season with Greater Western Sydney, missing five rounds with a back issue and two with concussion. But he's had a full pre-season and has been flying on the track, winning both the pre- and post-Christmas 2km time trials. Daniel Rioli made the All-Australian squad of 44 last year and has looked particularly sharp, while 20-year-old mid-season rookie Jacob Bauer – who should be next in line if Jack Riewoldt or Tom Lynch are injured – has impressed.

Well, this is new
What's old is new again at Richmond, with highly rated former backline coach Ben Rutten returning to the club after a stint as Essendon's senior coach. He's the second ex-head coach in Damien Hardwick's ranks, with David Teague coming into his second season at the Tigers. The inclusion of former GWS pair Jacob Hopper and Taranto has led Trent Cotchin to spend more time in attack, rotating through the middle where required. Developing young forward Kaelan Bradtke has won plenty of admirers over summer, earning Richmond's SSP spot.

And another thing…
The benefit of having two former senior coaches on staff came to the fore in the pre-Christmas training block, with Rutten and Teague taking charge while Damien Hardwick spent time in the US with the Dallas Mavericks (NBA) and Detroit Lions (NFL). On a decidedly lighter front, midfielder Jack Ross has slowly been developing a fresh look over summer, moving from a tight crop to longer curls. – Sarah Black
