On the up: How your club can improve in 2024

Midfield balance

Reigning AFLW Best and Fairest winner Monique Conti is clearly a star, and any midfield with her is better for it, but what the Tigers lacked in 2023 was midfield balance. Young gun Ellie McKenzie was set to be the key to this, offering an impressive five inside 50s and 325m gained from 15 disposals in her side's round one win over eventual premier Brisbane.

That was the only game McKenzie would go on to play, with an ankle injury ending her season, and quickly sending Richmond's year south in the process. Finding balance in the midfield group was the club's biggest challenge without McKenzie available. As good as Grace Egan and Sarah Hosking are, they are less dynamic and attacking than McKenzie, more providing coverage for Conti.

It is for this reason that Eilish Sheerin was such a revelation in the middle come round 10, boasting the size and attack McKenzie offers. Finding some depth in the players who can provide this to the midfield mix should injury strike again is crucial to Richmond's bounce back to finals this year.

I reckon our biggest weakness is overall speed in this side, apart from the little rocket Conti there is not a lot of speed in this side

A loaded cement truck is faster than this team.

Agree to extent about the speed side of things

But would suggest Sheerin, Yessir, Cox and Demosey has a bit of zip. Those along with Conti have pace

Daniel Rioli backed in a push to permanently move the AFLW Dreamtime match between Richmond and Essendon to Darwin.

While usually held at the MCG, the 2020 AFL Dreamtime game was moved to Darwin’s TIO Stadium and sold out.

“I reckon (AFLW Dreamtime games in Darwin) would be awesome,” Rioli said.

“Obviously we had that opportunity … I was up here playing the Dreamtime game and that was a pretty special game.

“AFLW would be awesome, we have a big footy fan base here in the Northern Territory and obviously a lot of women play here and are really good footballers.

“If it does happen it would be pretty special and I think everyone would get around it.”

AFLW season start date confirmed, length TBC

By Sarah Black

14 Feb 2024

THE AFL has confirmed the 2024 AFLW season will once again start during the last weekend of August.

The timing coincides with the pre-finals bye in the AFL men's competition, as has been the case for the past two seasons.

The recently signed CBA lays out that there will be 11 games per team in the 2024 season.

The AFL did not confirm if the competition would indeed extend the length of the season to accomodate the extra round, saying the fixture for the season would be "announced in due course".

A 10-round season and four weeks of finals would see the Grand Final played on the weekend of November 30, while an 11-round season would push the premiership decider to the weekend of December 7.

The recruit to watch at your club this season

There has been plenty of player movement over the off-season, with teams filling key needs with both draftees and recruits from other clubs. Gemma Bastiani takes a look at the players primed to make an impact

Montana McKinnon (Richmond)

Gabby Seymour has done an impressive job holding down Richmond's key ruck role in recent seasons, but the recruitment of Montana McKinnon allows the Tigers a chance to mix up the midfield group. McKinnon is more of a physical, pure ruck, while Seymour's athleticism can now be used across other lines – potentially in defence should Eilish Sheerin be released into the middle.
