Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admits he could have been sacked in 2016

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has admitted he could “quite easily” have been sacked last year, enduring his toughest season in coaching.

Hardwick revealed that he closed down from his players and coaches during an eight-win season, shutting himself off when he should have opened up.

Contracted for two more seasons, the club instead backed him to continue on and he has led the club to a 7-4 win-loss ratio at the bye.

But told SEN Radio it was a season of discovery after delving into his “darkest places”, thankful for the faith the club’s hierarchy showed him.

“I learnt a big lesson from last year because sometimes you learn most when you are in your darkest places,’’ he said.

“The funny thing is when you are losing you tend to work harder and shut yourself away from everyone. You think you are the solution to the problem but half the time you are the problem.

“Sometimes you are not good enough at the time and I was working too hard, not listening to enough people, not getting enough advice and I was at my worst.

“Realistically I should have been getting around my players, getting around my staff, and asking their opinions.

“You are at the head of the ship and you are steering it in a direction and it’s not necessarily the right direction.”

Had Hardwick been out of contract the Tigers decision might have been different but the club instead allowed him to coach on.

“Brendon Gale and Peggy O’Neal have been outstanding. They could quite easily have said, “Dimma, it’s time”,’’ he said.

“But they backed me in and I am glad they did and we are lot better for it.”

It has been a pre-season of honesty for the Tigers, with captain Trent Cotchin standing up in front of players and admitting to his weaknesses.

Vice-captain Alex Rance also did something similar as the club vowed to start enjoying its football as they did growing up as juniors with a looser game plan

“Normally we salute the coach as the one who wins (the premiership). It’s an incredibly tough industry and we accept it as coaches but it’s about thriving in the process and enjoying what you do. Every day is a new challenge,” he said

Hardwick said the Tigers had been keen to trade for Brisbane forward Josh Schache, who re-signed with the Lions on Thursday.

“We certainly would have entertained the idea if he wanted to come home, he would have been a great match for our footy club. But that’s not the case now.

“It was certainly an option we were going to explore.”

Hardwick said Ben Griffiths, battling concussion, had gone away to Hamilton Island for a break, unsure whether he would return to football this year.

We would have entertained Schache deal says Dimma

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admits the club would have made a serious move for Brisbane young gun Josh Schache had he decided not to remain at the Lions.

The 19-year old was heavily linked with a move back to Victoria, but opted to sign on for two more years, with the Tigers mentor declaring most teams would have been ‘’mad’’ if they did not consider him.

“I think most clubs would’ve been mad if they weren’t considering him,” Hardwick said on SEN’s The Super Box.

“He’s a No.2 Draft pick, key forward. Those sort of guys don’t come out of contract very often. It was certainly an option we were going to explore.

“But look credit where credit’s due, he stayed at Brisbane and probably our thoughts were that was more than likely going to happen.

“We certainly would’ve entertained the idea if he wanted to come home, he would’ve been a great match for our footy club. But that’s not the case now.”

Despite having some developing talls coming through, Hardwick said providing more support for Jack Riewoldt will be a priority through the trade and draft period.

“Us from a key forward (perspective) we’ve got some young developing talls on our list that we think we will be good players over a period of time, but we’d certainly like to offer Jack some help somewhere along the line,” he said.

“He is playing one out at the moment, (and) we’ve got some injuries to obviously Ben (Griffiths), Todd Elton dislocated his shoulder on the weekend.”

He confirmed Griffiths has been given leave from the club as he recovers from a number of bouts of concussion and ultimately the number one priority is his welfare.

“He’s gone to Hamilton Island for a period of time,” Hardwick said.

“We’re confident he will come back and play at some stage, whether it’s this year we’re not too sure, but our number one priority is the health of the lad.

“He’s an impressive player, he’s shown that he can play at the level, kicked four or five goals a couple of times and we certainly miss him at the moment.”

Really - we thought he was going to stay at Brisbane did we? Because nobody else did....including Brisbane....

What young developing talls do we have Dimma?

Soldo, Elton, Chol and Moore?

I think we need a lot more than that.

Which part impressed you? Nothing impressive about his coaching if the status quo continues come September

Call it a half empty approach but it's all means SFA if he fails again.

The rest of his interview was pretty good

How he answered questions about last year, could have spun a heap of "nothingness" but actually answered honestly. Was refreshing rather than spinning dribble

fair enough thats true. I didnt like the suggestion of peggy and gale having done the right thing or"we are better for it" in not sacking him.

Lets leave that judgement till seasons end wise guy.
