Have many clubs done better than us with their drafting?

Finally a good question

To properly judge FJ one would need to compare him to other club recruiters and their record in selecting capable players v duds and the resources those recruiters had to do their job.

Heppel and Cripps were bad misses. Fyfe I still say that blindsided everyone. He was drafted as a 2nd/3rd tall forward from memory? No one knew he would become an on ball machine!

Why are they bad misses for Richmond and no other club?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Every recruiter has hit misses in every sport we're talking to , but no one can deny Jackson build 80% of this list.

Every single club has both hits and misses but fact of the matter is our recruiters have built a team that has one 3 out of the last 4 premierships with hopefully more to come. That’s puts us at the equal third most of any club in the AFL era so I think we are doing pretty well especially considering they introduced the suns and giants while we were still towards the bottom of the ladder which pushed our top end picks further down.

Also can anyone tell me how we would manage to retain our players if we had picked the best available player with all our picks? How do you fit in Cripps, Fyfe, etc into a salary cap that already includes dusty, jack, lynch, cotch and previously rance?

Whether people want to believe it or not every decision made right or wrong over the past decade has led us to where we are now.

Sounds good to me.

Big, 2 years or so older than the younger kids, academy player at Brisbane, absolute mad tiger supporter.

Should be slightly ahead of the pack and his footage looks quite good.

Hard to know without all the other details.
IF ... the injury to Nankervis is a badly degenerative one (which it sometimes can be) then that's a triple winning ruck out.
IF ... the injury to Soldo is more serious or degenerative that we know that's another premiership ruck out.
IF ... the fallout from CCJ's kebab run has meant Adelaide has their hooks into him to go home, then he's out after next year.
IF ... there is no change in Chol's attitude/effort and his non-competitive ruck work continues.

THEN ... Ryan is not only just a shrewd choice but inevitable.

It's still a lot of rucks if you include Miller too. Especially for a smaller list. I think they are saying Miller is a back, Chol a forward and soldo injured.

Presumably we wanted someone who was Soldo's size to replace him for 2021. Most of the others are shorter ruck options. Colina is a beanpole but he won't play seniors next year. CCJ is next tallest at 204cm. The rest are <=200cm.

CCJ is 200 isn't he?

Still a project ruck along with Colina and Ryan.

Hope CCJ is decent. Poor Nank going to have a tough 2021.

Bad misses for everyone including us! Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy we won 3 out of 4. It’s just fun to sit back and reminisce about what “could have been” with trades and drafts. Because on the flip side I think it’s awesome we snagged Riewoldt in 06 and other than Selwood I’d argue everyone taken before him had been below par.

The thing about the Riewoldt choice is that there were seen to be a lot of key position players at the top of that draft.
2 - Gumbleton   197
3 - Hansen   197
4 - Leunberger    203 Ruck
6 - Thorp   194
8 - Reid    196
10 - Nathan Brown 194
11 - Everitt   193
12 - Frawley  193
13 - Jack   192
14 - Sellar    195
16 - Mitch Brown   193
17 - Hampson   201  ruck

This leads me to think that the reasoning may have been that at least one of a really level group of keys would still be available at 13, giving up 8 for Polak.
Ironic that most of those talls would be busts while the smalls in Gibbs (1), Boak (5), Selwood (7), Armitage (9) and O'Keefe (15) were better long term.
