Mansell's case is on now.

Richmond has pleaded not guilty. It says this wasn't a bump.

Legal reps: Sam Tovey (Richmond) and Lisa Hannon (AFL)

Jurors: Jeff Gleeson (Chair), Talia Radan and David Neitz.

Fremantle's medical report says James Aish is expected to miss two or more matches.

Rhyan Mansell is giving evidence. He has not been asked to confirm his name. Or how it's spelt.

Mansell: I thought I could win the football until that last split second ... I braced to protect myself from contact.

Mansell: If I had've kept running straight on, I would've opened myself and both of us up to injury.

Tovey (Tigers): Is what you did a 'bump'?

Mansell: No, I don't believe so.

Mansell: I don't think I had any other option but to protect myself.

Hannon (AFL): You could've tackled him?

Mansell: I don't believe I could've.

Hannon (AFL): You could've slowed?

Mansell: Not at the speed we were going at.

Wow, the AFL rep is clueless about footy if that's their suggested alternative options :facepalm.

When there's two players going for a loose ball, you can't tackle your opponent who hasn't taken possession of the ball.

And if a player pulls out of a contest (i.e. "you could've slowed"), they would get dragged and likely dropped from the team.

Hannon (AFL): If this does not constitute a bump, what is it then?

Hannon (AFL): At the point of the bump, Mansell wasn't contesting the ball. If he was, it wasn't reasonable to contest the ball in the way he did.

Hannon (AFL) says Mansell could've tackled Aish. Alternatively, he could've slowed "even slightly".

The AFL is asking for a penalty of no more than three matches.

Then Aish could have "slowed even slightly" as well? What a ridiculous argument  ::).

Tovey (Tigers) says Mansell was bracing but "not driving through in a classic bumping motion".

Tovey (Tigers): Mansell's attack on the ball was legitimate and it was genuine. Who was going to get the ball was dependent on that final bounce.

Tovey (Tigers) says there were two tenths of a second for Mansell to react to the ball bouncing to Aish.

Tovey (Tigers): He braces himself at the last possible moment. If this was a player who was lining up another player to bump, you would see that motion occurring earlier.

Wonder what would happen if the 2 players collected and concussed each other, would they both face the tribunal? Because it’s a matter of 0.1 seconds away from it being potentially that way or mansell being concussed.

Tovey (Tigers): This is a genuine contest between two players going hard at the ball.

Yep, it's ridiculous what the AFL rep. is suggesting.

The answer to this is for BOTH players to use the correct technique as Mansell did and both turn their bodies so they collide side on and avoid any head high contact. If Aish had also turned his body, he wouldn't have been concussed.

15 minutes gone. They're still deliberating.
