People are saying we must appeal

But on what grounds?

AFL changed the rules last season after the Cripps fiasco

Unless we have something new there is no avenue to appeal

It is a disgraceful decision but reckon we are stuck with it

Gaelic footy anyone. Have had an inkling this is where they want to get to for many years now.

Just ban the bump if they don't have the guts to do that which they don't because everything they do is slow and thru the back door and they won't openly go against public opinion then just set a very clear criteria like we used to have.

The degoey bump was fine imo. ball was in the area the player could expect contact both players were upright it was from the side he stayed low kept everything tucked in good bump that just happened to cop his opponent high because he was a bigger man free kick only.

When a tackle goes high we dont go to the tribunal it is just a free kick.

They don't want to say it,  but the afl wants players to squib contests 100% now.

“IT JUST DOESN’T SEEM RIGHT”: HODGE COMMENTS ON SICILY, MANSELL SUSPENSIONS

Andrew Slevison
SEN
14 June 2023

Luke Hodge believes the suspensions handed down to both Hawthorn’s James Sicily and Richmond’s Rhyan Mansell are extremely harsh.

Hodge added on SEN’s Whateley: “I feel that the Tribunal got it wrong last night.”

Tigers youngster Mansell was also hit with a suspension of three matches for his head-high bump on Fremantle’s James Aish.

Mansell was attempting to gather the ball at full speed when he and Aish collided which ended in a concussion to the Dockers winger.

Hodge was at a loss to explain what else Mansell could have done to avoid contact.

“On face value, if you watch that last split-second of the bump, it looks like he’s going to run straight through him,” Hodge added.

“If you look at how the play unfolded, Aish was running with the ball, the ball’s gone over his head, Mansell has run out and that ball bobbled end over end and sat up which meant it went back towards Aish.

“If that had have bobbled one more time, Mansell picks the ball up and he’s charging out. Everyone is going to sit there and go ‘well done, look at the attack on this young fella’.

“That ball bounces up, Aish doesn’t get the ball in his hands so he (Mansell) can’t tackle him, he can’t slow down and he collides. The Tribunal said why didn’t he attempt to pick up the ball? If he had have tried to get the ball, he would have run head-first straight into Aish.

“So then you would have had two blokes knocked out.

“As a (past) player I feel for him because he did the right thing and because of the bounce of an oval ball, it made him hesitate.

“I’m siting here going is three weeks fair for that? That’s probably a bit harsh in my books.”

Additionally, Collingwood great Nathan Buckley took to Twitter to express his dismay with the current environment.

He believes the game is difficult enough for the players without muddying the waters even further when it comes to tackling and bumping.

Like Hawthorn, Richmond still considering taking their case to the AFL Appeals Board after Rhyan Mansell’s three match ban was upheld at the tribunal. Tigers told they have until 4pm today.

Justin Longmuir said he was reluctant to comment on Mansell's Tribunal case given he did not follow it closely, but the coach expected there would be ongoing frustration as players adjusted to new expectations around head high contact.

"We are asking our players to make split second decisions and sometimes they're going to get those decisions wrong," he said.

"I think overall, the AFL's mantra of protecting the head is right and as we try and reach a water level where it's acceptable in our game there is going to be some frustrations around players getting suspended or free kicks against.

"We're just going to have to deal with those frustrations until we find the right level."

FREMANTLE could be without important wingman James Aish for multiple matches because of concussion as he recovers from a heavy collision with Richmond forward Rhyan Mansell.

"This isn't Aishy's first concussion, so we'll take extra precaution and make sure we get everything right," Longmuir said on Wednesday.

I'm guessing we will challenge the Tribunal's judgement that it wasn't a contested loose ball. When you look at the vision, at no stage does Aish have clean possession of the ball (so tackling him wasn't an option for Mansell). Then there's the speed element. A modern footballer can sprint at around 11 m/s. The Tribunal expected Mansell to alter his speed and course barely one metre away. That's only 0.09 secs to make a decision which is unrealistic. Then add the unpredictability of the last bounce of the ball just before the collision where the ball lands on its point and changes direction. If the bouncing ball's trajectory had remained the same (bouncing away from Aish and towards Mansell) then the outcome would've been obviously different.

I am genuinely surprised they are challenging but very glad that they are

He was looking at Aish more than a metre away which is the issue
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

It's the wrong decision. MT is spot on what other option is there he never took possession, can't suspend for 3 weeks cause of not putting hands on the footy.

But by precedent he turns the body and it looks bumpy. Anyone who has played footy knows you don't have to be front on to take possession, side on protects yourself from injury and makes you harder to tackle.

Can't see the verdict changing.

I glad they are challenging , it not worth 3 weeks as it was a deliberate act like other recent example's , 2 weeks would be fairer
