If the Tigers make it and win it then I couldn't care if it's played at 2am.

Why do we need entertainment full stop? The sport should be good enough to stand on it's own and sell itself without all that stupid Seppo shyte.  Divert the millions paying has-beens from overseas to grass roots footy. The only razzmatazz I want to see is from the players or adorning the legs of female spectators. It's the Grand Final of the football, not the stuffing Rock Eisteddfod.
The early superbowls didn't have this half-time 'spectacular'. All they had was college marching bans. Then I think someone got the idea of attracting non-football fans with pop stars or a rival network created on a half-time show, and its size and popularity took off as each network tried to out do the other. It also helps that these popstars perform for no appearance fee nowdays as the publicity alone from doing a Superbowl show increases the artist's record sales by something like 75%. Our Grand Final doesn't have that appeal or scale, so the AFL has to pay just to get old acts whose prime was 30 years ago or the Australian Idol/Voice/etc types. The acoustics at the 'G for a concert act are terrible too. Add to that we don't have a sporting culture of mass crowd involvement around the ground. Imagine MCC members all being asked to hold up placards for a young pop act lol.

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan can’t guarantee a day Grand Final this year with the push for a groundbreaking twilight match again gaining momentum.

prefer decent pre-game entertainment.  That's where the NRL has it over the AFL

The match itself is the entertainment, it doesn't need stuffing support acts.

AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder has backed a twilight start time for the Grand Final.

It comes ahead of next week’s season launch commission meetings, at which the Grand Final start time will be discussed, with a decision set to be announced on Thursday.

While fans have generally been against the move in most polls, it has appeared a fait accompli for some time the game will eventually be pushed back, enabling a greater spectacle for the halftime entertainment, as well as moving into prime time for TV broadcasters.

The Grand Final has traditionally started at 2:30pm EDT, with a 3pm start time for 1999’s North Melbourne v Carlton clash.

Twilight matches during the home and away season start at 4:35pm EDT.

Goyder suggested a twilight start time, rather than a night one, would work better for families.

One again the AFL says it'll consider a twilight/night GF in the future but for this year it will remain a 2:30pm start time.

Eddie McGuire said the ‘plan’ at this stage is to play a night Grand Final.

“If everything goes according to plan, and ‘Darce’ (Luke Darcy) I’ll say this today, I think we’ll have a night Grand Final this year,” he said.

“I think we’ll have the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on the Friday night, I think we’ll have the holiday on the Friday and then Saturday will be the Cox Plate and then Saturday night will be the Grand Final.”

AFL ‘hasn’t had a single discussion’ about night grand final for 2020 season.

Hocking also suggested the Grand Final could take place at the same time as the Cox Plate, with both expected to take place on October 24.

“I can’t see why you couldn’t have multiple sports going around at the same time.”

ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS

Music promoter Michael Gudinski says pushing back the start time of the AFL Grand Final, as looms for 2020, would be the key to getting someone like Kylie Minogue to perform at the game.

Gudinski expects Australian acts to be heavily featured this year, both at the Grand Final and in music venues generally, given the limits on international travel currently in place.

Night grand final would be 'one-off', says McLachlan

Jake Niall
The Age
6 June 2020

The AFL has declared that a night or twilight grand final would be "a one-off" and not necessarily be repeated in 2021 if it happened this year.

AFL boss Gillon McLachlan confirmed that the league would like the grand final to be played on the weekend of October 24, which is Cox Plate weekend in Victoria, was "optimistic" that crowds would attend the season's finale and had plans for crowds to return at all venues.

I think the 2020 grand final should be a rootathon. Every club should nominate their best rooter and on the last day in september the 18 rooters all congregate
At the MCG and start rooting premium selection prostitutes. The player who lasts longest wins the 2020 premiership cup for his club and they are proclaimed Premiers. No asterix involved.
