What a pleasure it has been to cheer this bloke on for so long.

He won't play like that every week, same goes for Cotchin, we cannot forget what these guys have given us and as much as they aren't at their best stuff me they are champion players. A huge shame we didn't get up tonight and we remember this game as one of the great courageous efforts by one of our absolute legends of the club.
Go Tigers!

Jack's interview post-game:

https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1307897/it-s-a-bitter-pill-to-swallow-riewoldt

---------------------------------------------------------------

Riewoldt lamented his side’s lack of discipline

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt told Channel Seven post Friday night loss to Sydney, he was disappointed to see a lack of discipline creep into his team’s game.

“The thing that really hurts is probably the lack of discipline by us at the end of the game to give away those 50m penalties. Easy goals,” Riewoldt said.

“[He was] a bit disappointed the way that one finished out. Obviously disappointed... We played good footy before and we thought we were a good chance of winning.

“It was a bitter pill to swallow. You can cop being beaten by opposition as we were tonight, but the lack of discipline is disappointing and it is something you don’t want creeping into your game.”

He added that his head injury earlier in the game, which saw blood pour from his head and need to be bandaged up, gave his wife and family a fright but is ok.

“Obviously it is part of footy and one of those footy incidents,” he said.

Hardwick lauded the performance of veteran forward Jack Riewoldt, who recovered from a nasty cut on his head to boot 4.1 in a lone hand effort inside Richmond’s forward 50.

“He looked dangerous inside 50. We didn’t have a lot of great looks tonight, but he’s probably the guy that stood up,” Hardwick said.

“I didn’t see the actual incident (that left Riewoldt bloodied), but I saw him come back on. He’s a warrior, Jack. He’s had multiple breaks and all these sorts of things and he just continues to play. He has a couple of operations every year, but it’s what’s made him one of our game’s greatest players.”

Riewoldt, 34, said he had pulled up well despite needing seven staples in the head after a heavy clash with Sydney’s Hayden McLean, but he joked his daughters might be scarred when they see him after he returns to Victoria.

He needed to kick 4  just to keep us in it. Thats what happens when you only have ONE GENUINE key fwd in your team.
Likely Bauer would have had a quite night but at least he would have had a taste.

Really hope next week we can stop picking non fwds to play in the fwd half and play two genuine tall fwds with a ruck/fwd. Then at their feet just play the best sml/med forwards we have. And not for one week bloody persevere with them where possible.

FWD half next week

FF/ Miller - Bauer - Bolton
HF/ Clarke - Riewoldt - Cumberland

R/ Ryan - Taranto - Prestia. Prestia really needs to come to the 2023 party god he has been ordinary.
C/ Pickett - Martin - Banks

HB/ McIntosh - Balta - Rioli
FB/ Mansell - Young - Grimes

INT/ Cotchin - Hopper - Baker - Sonsie

Sub ????.

Bolton i have wanted to start on ball but if he is going to play like a cream on top player then play him fwd. The small i have liked is Campbell maybe even give him a go.
Just play em and just let em play to their strengths.

Jack on AFL360 said he's ok and he is playing this week. To protect the wound though, he'll be going with the old school Rugby League tape around his head.

What a warrior.

I hate the haters who hate on him. Wish they could see what a stellar bloke and career there is.

Was excellent again, I think as a footy public we can be so over critical on players when we look beyond the role players play. When Lynch is in the side we don't kick it to Jack anymore. Now he's number 1 man again he's showing how much he can hurt opponents still. His role when Lynch is playing I'd part decoy part bring ball to ground.
Go Tigers!

Jack Riewoldt, 34, said he would jump at the chance to be involved with the Tasmanian club.

“That’s the thing Tasmanians will do. They’re littered across the AFL, in many different roles, and AFLW,” he said.

“They’ll be putting their hands up to give back to the state that has given them so much. The formation will be an exciting process.”

1529 goals, six flags, one unforgettable AFL photo: Future Hall of Famers’ touching moment

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
13 May 2023

This was a moment Jack Riewoldt and Tom Hawkins will never forget.

In the twilight of their respective careers, the two modern-day greats on Friday night swapped jumpers in the middle of the MCG.

Riewoldt’s Tigers had just wound back the clock, producing their best and slickest performance of the season so far to beat Hawkins’ Cats by 24 points.

Minutes after the final siren had sounded, Riewoldt and Hawkins looked for each other out on the ground.

The 34-year-olds took off their respective jumpers, signed them with a pen and handed them over to each other before posing for photos.

Hawkins and Riewoldt between them have claimed six premierships, eight All-Australians, four Coleman Medals and three best and fairests between them. They’ve kicked a combined 1529 goals from 670 games.

“Two Hall of Famers right there. They go straight in when they’re eligible,” Tigers legend Matthew Richardson said on Channel 7.

Luke Hodge added: “They’ve just been so durable and consistent players for such a long time.”

Both players are out of contract at season’s end, prompting Melbourne champion Garry Lyon to wonder whether one of them might retire at season’s end.

“The swapping of the jumpers was an interesting one” Lyon told Fox Footy.

“They were here on AFL 360 together during the week, so maybe they hatched that plan during the week

“I was more interested in one of them is going to retire, if that’s the case.”

Very similar stats. Both champions. Great careers.

Yep both excellent players. Jack was definitely better when he was younger but Hawkins has remained at such a high level for longer. Both true champions
