Footy is footy and it’s great fun.

Richmond premiership defender Alex Rance will join Essendon as a part-time development coach.

Rance will work with current development coaches Leigh Tudor and Cam Roberts with the club's first-to-fourth-year players in the Jack Jones Academy, as well as assisting the Bombers' key-position players.

"I'm really excited to join the Bombers as a development coach for next season," Rance told essendonfc.com.au.

"I couldn't think of a better place to start my journey as a coach in the AFL. Having familiar faces in 'Truck' (Ben Rutten) and 'Cara' (Blake Caracella) around to work with was really appealing to me.

"I really enjoyed my experience with the VFL Bombers up in Queensland earlier this year, and I loved helping those young players grow and learn, which will be a big part of my role here.

"I can't wait to get started and help the club towards success."

It is a shame we could not get him as a development coach.

Another example of how other “big” clubs seemingly aren’t shy to add quality people to their footy department in spite of the dreaded soft cap.

Yep. If they are trying to squeeze one more flag out of this group they have a unique way of showing it.

Last years set up was laughable and so far I ain’t seeing much change.

His academy is based out in Tullamarine from memory so it could just be better for him to coach Essendon from there?

He has big respect and high regard for Truck Rutten has spoken about him on that interview he did with Dylan Buckley.

Jack Riewoldt insists he wouldn’t be too worried if he had to line up on the 31-year-old [Alex Rance].

“I kicked seven on him in an intra-club in three quarters, I’ll be absolutely licking my lips if he comes out to me,” he joked.

“That cropped up out of nowhere really, the big ‘Trossman’ deciding to go to Essendon. He’s obviously very good friends with Ben Rutten. He and ‘Rancey’ have a very good relationship.

“He’s joined Essendon as a development coach which I honestly did not see coming. Best of luck to him.”

Australian Test captain Tim Paine, a massive Bombers supporter, believes there could be something extra in Rance’s move to Tullamarine.

“He played in our VFL team last year, ‘Come down Alex, see if you like the place, see if you like the boys’,” he said.

“He’s good friends with the coach, as you said, he’s gone back and said, ‘You know what, ‘Truck’? Great bunch of lads, enjoyed my time, if anything pops up next year, if you can just sneak me into the club I’ll take that’.

“‘Then try and rookie me during the year and when we play against Richmond, I’ll stand on Jack and run off him with dash, he won’t be able to chase me, and I’ll set the Bombers up for a huge victory on Dreamtime’.”

There were rumors around at the time. Big footy has them.

Well Dave addressed it in his retirement press conference and said it was all BS trying to tarnish his great career.
