Yep.

It exists in most sports and would give kids and adults a greater sentimental attachment to their favourite player if they owned a jumper with the players name on it.  Great revenue for the clubs also.

Victorian clubs complain about money and the lack of it, and say they can't compete with interstate teams.  But when an idea with a possibility of increasing revenue arises, they, and it's supporters, play the "tradition" card and refuse it.  A Westcoast or an Adelaide would jump at the suggestion and wouldn't look back.

It's no big deal really -  Clash jumpers, away jumpers, names on backs.

There is enough room on the back for the names - Basketball tops have no sleeves and the names fit easily and are readable.  Would just need to push the numbers a bit lower for AFL.

Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

The Bombers are selling guernseys with player's name and number on them for $15 extra. We should offer the same thing.

Bump.

Cashing in on names worth a guernsey

IT MAY seem like a trivial issue in the face of big-ticket items on the AFL agenda, but the concept of having a player's surname on the back of his match-day guernsey must be explored.

Indeed, it would appear to be a win-win for all parties.

For the spectator on match day, particularly those of the less-fanatical leaning, names would quickly and clearly identify who is on the field.

It would also help the television viewer, and perhaps commentator, as do the named jumpers in the world's premier soccer leagues and America's NFL and NBA. Australia's one-day international and Twenty20 teams have also adopted this lead.

For the AFL, clubs, players and their managers, it looms as a commercial success, as supporters may be more tempted to buy the guernseys and T-shirts of their favourite players.

TWO of the game's most enduring figures say it's time tradition made way for common sense.

The AFL remains one of the few sports in the world where players' names are not featured on the backs of guernseys, and North Melbourne champion Brent Harvey and Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy want that to change.

Any true supporter worth his salt will know who a player is at the very least by his number. Names are for Part-Time Bandwagoners.

This is correct. Just like on OER I have disabled usernames and recognise everyone purely via avatar  :cheers
