Probably not the place to post this but seeing as it is the most read part of the forum, what the heck, please just leave it here mods :thumbsup.
I have just returned from a site visit to a mine in Zambia (Africa) for a job I don't think I can refuse. With the way they pay over their I should be retired in a couple of years.. :clapping
I will be returning back there in about 10-12 days so until I get set up over there I will be posting less on the forum than I usually do, unfortunately, but should make one-some people happy... ;D
I took a 5-6 hour bus drive from the an Airport in Ndola to the mine site and unless you have seen it over their we really don't know how lucky we have it in here, really, it is an eye opener.. :(.
I will also be educating them on our national game and I am actually going to take an AFL football with me, that should be fun as all they really play is soccer.
Anyway just thought I would share this with you all!!
-
Good luck to you over there. What is their internet access like?
-
Yeah, play footy with the locals while you exploit their precious resources :rollin
-
I agree we are increadibly lucky.
It is interesting/ironic that you point this injustice out, given the poor/illegal way the profits of mines have been distributed to the legit residents of the land.
good luck to you though, i enjoy reading your opinions!!

Environmental rapists ;D
I wonder what the company will give back to the community in return for their riches
A water well or something really special? lol

A water well or something really special? lol
Yeah I expected these sort of comments from the uneducated.. :lol. 95.5% of the workers are Zambian and if it wasn't for the mines they would still be living in the AIDS affected villages that the mines are also supporting to help with medical traetment etc...
We (ex pats) go over there to help develop a sustainable work force that in years to come will not need foreign help as they will be able to do it themselves.

Cheers, internet is all good, I just have to get it all hooked up but I am not sure when that will happen.

Some of them do Froars but they are rarely if ever directed to the areas that need it most. I spent 6 months living in Central Africa in the 90's and wholeheartedly concur with WAT's observation - you really have to live there to get an appreciation of how different life is. Corruption at the highest level is the norm and almost every country in the entire African continent has been raped by their own rulers for so many years that the chance of recovery in our lifetime for many of them is quite hopeless. And what is much more galling is that most of the catalyst for the disintegration of the true African lifestyle and culture was the greed of the Western world - colonialism - in a word. I read a fascinating and very sad historical account of modern Africa recently - "The State Of Africa" - and it highlights how culpable our Western society has been (and still is in many ways) in the political and cultural downfall of most of the countries that make up that beautiful continent.

Do the profits stay here, with anything we produce in our own country, mining aside???

Dead right Smokey, your comments are very true, if it wasn't for Westerners going into the country it would be completely corrupt, it near on is now, as you say. The Police and Government are still on the take and they abuse their own race moer than we do.
We are really helping in ways that many people other than people like you and I will never see or understand!
-
Why are the profits relevant?
-
yeah we are doing a kick ass job over there. 68% of Zambians live under the poverty line. Life expectancy is a whopping 40 years. Well at least they don't have to set money aside for retirement.
please do not say that us westerners have done ANYTHING but exploited that continent then handed back our scraps in return.
-
Best of luck WAT. Bring back a centre half forward! :gotigers

Got any stats to compare what their life expectancy and how many were under the poverty line before westerners were there?
Bit meaningless otherwise.

Read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A Price. It gives a good insight into how the Western influence affected the lives of many people around the globe.

Sadly WAT I don't think we are helping. We created the whole shyte-storm by colonisation, then walked (or were pushed in many places) out and left the Africans totally unprepared to move forward and prosper according to Western doctrine. All we did was plunder without care or responsibility. The corruption is there because we gave them a taste of another life without teaching any of the social 'morals' that need to accompany that supposed better lifestyle. Yes, the current governments made up of their own people are corrupt and often evil but we showed them and we taught them - we can't now blame them.
-

Bit meaningless otherwise.
There was no poverty line before Westerners moved in Infamy, that's at the core of the whole problem. The poverty line is a Western measurement of Western social means - had no concept or peer in African society until we showed them a 'better' way. ::)
-
so true smokey...and it wasn't just in Africa either.

Sorry Cranny can't agree with those comments, the damage was done prior to Aussies moving in there. Life expectantcy is actually 35 years old, I am not going over there to exploit anyone either I am going to help, and yes of course get payed for it but they can not do this stuff on their own.

The problem may have occurred with the end of colonisation in Africa at the end of ww2! Westerners left a whole continent to fight over a mineral rich resource causing civil wars, corruption and massive breaches in human rights! Sorry to politicise it! Good luck WAT! Love your work!

good luck with your new job. It would be a great experience working in another country no doubt especially one like africa that has such a different culture.

Thanks T101, yes very much looking forward to it, always looking for good people over there too. Different culture is one of the main reasons I am going, everyone should experience a different culture IMO, I have been to England and Scotland but Zambian people are amazing!

I will also be educating them on our national game and I am actually going to take an AFL football with me, that should be fun as all they really play is soccer.
Anyway just thought I would share this with you all!!
Sounds like an offer too good to pass by WAT
hope it all works out well
being in the same game I appreciate what your saying
its not all beer and skittles out there but if we can have any sort of positive impact on others lives then its a good thing
and you may need to take more than 1 footy :thumbsup

Yep dead right 632, too good to refuse, lol at taking another footy, actually after you saying that I may need to take more than 2 haha.
You are also correct; if we can have any positive impact over there which we will, it will certainly help them out and to move forward.

Do the profits stay here, with anything we produce in our own country, mining aside???
Got to applaud that comeback. Australia dont own much at all ;D All the power stations & mines are owned by overseas companies
Australia has been raped severely & its our fault for letting it happen
As for Africa l can truely say the whole country is corrupted & have witnessed it.
You dont say anything out of context over there about corruption or you go missing. Friends of mine were locked up for 37 days on false charges & had to pay big money to be freed.
The whites over thier live in fear its that bad & can tell you l will never set foot on there soil again.
-
and you're telling people here,why ?
cause l can ;D

Agree there are some parts of Africa like that TM, but not where I am going, although I did see a bit of what you are talking about and no doubt I will see a lot more.

Decent steak, oh yeah, really miss that. Beer is pretty good actually, lots of German beer and the local Mozi Gold (great name) is a bit like Crown.

Good Luck over there WAT... Lot of..Rock for Cash eh! ;D
Regarding Africa and its descent into corruption and I agree with Smokey that Western influence and colonisation totally screwed Africa.
The tribal system, although sometimes brutal worked for thousands of years. It maintained a sense of social order through the elder system and they lived off the land knowing nothing of the riches that lay underground, but once colonisation commenced, radicals were introduced such as modern weapons, the unearthing of immensely valuable minerals and of course with that came greed and the almighty dollar.
The west threw in political systems and laws that the indigenous people had no idea how to operate or control and once the colonisers got what they needed they were gone. What was left was anarchy and opportunistic cashed up twisted individuals who no longer had respect for elders or the tribal system now that they had a taste for the power and trappings of the western lifestyle and the only way they knew how to maintain this new lifestyle was through violence and the oppression of their own people.

Drink driving? Possession of an illegal firearm? Fraud? Assault?

Ok, back home again for 3 weeks.....yay.....here are some pics of of the country just around the mine, yes they are real mushies...no not magic, this guy got these two on the mine site. They grow wild in the wet season and they are eatable and good eating too. The cloud is amazingly low in Zambia, 4000ft above sea level, sometimes it feels like you could just reach out and touch them.. Merry Christmas to you all, I hope you have a great time with your families.

Ok, drum roll.... :lol
So after 2 years in Zambia (gone quick) I have been offered a role in Papua New Guinea on a FIFO roster of 8 days on 6 days off.....based in Brisbane.
So I will be moving my wife from here in Zambia on site and my kids from Boarding School in South Africa to Brissy.....and hell they are excited.
So we will move there on May 1st.......can't bloody wait, now I will get to ride my bike more up and down the Sunshine Coast ;D....but better than ever we will get to see the Tiges play more.....wahoooo......anyway I just thought I would share this good news with you.
By the way in my two years here I have mentored, coached and developed a Zambian team that is sustainable to carry on the processes and policies I have introduced. I have developed an individual to move into my role as Superintendent, another employee to move into a Coordinator role and another to move into the role of advisor.
I have implemented a succession plan that will see my team here grow from a team of expats to a team of 32 Zambian only personnel by 2015.....
I am extremely proud of what I have done....what many have not done in this country, develop the Nationals, without taking them for granted and lining my pockets.
I tell you all this not for glory, I tell you this for the knockers that criticised me earlier in this thread for coming here to take advantage of the situation here.....Well I can assure you all I have done what I came here to do and I will walk out of Africa, Zambia, with my head held high......
Hopefully I will see some of you soon!!!!

Thanks DD, the family are bloody happy, kids can't wait to get out of the Boarding School an all the wife wants to do is hit the shops... :lol

Good stuff WAT. I'm impressed.
You should bring Gerks and Davey across on some of your PNG forays. They have an eye for talent, and Davey is really into 'national geographic-type' women.

Nice work WAT although your ID needs to change to Global or Sunshine Tiger ;D
