Speaking to Craig Lambert today and he tells me one of his four young sons (13 y-o) is already on the RFC radar. :thumbsup
The kid is over-the-moon and will be a guest of the club down the track

Good news

Father-Son selections are huge in strengthening up the list in the long term, without giving up too much. although the dogs parting with their 1st rounder for cordy might have been a little generous in hindsight.

I think a couple of years ago there was talk Brisbane were a chance to win out but the way the Lions are a basketcase now and we've got our act together off-field and heading in the right direction on it it's really a no-brainer of a decision.
-
Weightman has 3 sons...but are 12, 10 and 8....I've heard the 12 year old Liam is very talented. Something to keep in mind for the future.

Wikipedia has him playing 123 games for us and 96 games for the Bears/Lions.
So they would not be able to nominate him for father son anyway.
I remember the talk but after a bit of research i am certain we are the only ones that can lay claim. :)

I seen Paul Broderick at the footy last Saturday. Had his two boys with him also. They are only around 8-10 y/o though, so would be a few years away.

Last July they were 13, 11 and 9, according to Flea, so that would make them all approximately 2 years older than what you've said.
-
3 fleas and a Lambo running around in the future.
I'll drink to that.

By the way, how's the injury going?

Why would Kelvin Moore bother arguing on an internet forum? No offense to this forum but the players are living the life they don't need to talk, or argue about it. Whoever red is, he/she won't be Moore.

Must be Jacko then. :lol
It's Moorey. Dubszy is a Government IT bloke and he knows who we are

This is true. And I might add, It's amazing how easy it is. Some of the info one finds....
For example, did you know GG has a third nipple?
All true.

Cheers for that HMH :cheers. There was also rumour going around a few years ago that Lambert wouldn't let his kid play for Richmond but obviously that was a load of garbage going by what Bateman said.
Just a question - was Essendon able to nominate one of their father-sons before draft age at age 16 either last or early this year? I remember hearing something it. If so I wonder if Lambert does somehow turn out to be a bit of a gun we could then do the same.

Has Joel Bowden had any kids? ;D

That would be popular on here ;D
I wonder if Duncan Kellaway has passed on his kicking 'skills' to his offspring :-X lol.
Btw Richie Tambling's son Tyson is eligible to be one of our father-sons in about 12 years time if he grows up to be a footballer.

Essendon hasn't been able to list one of their father sons in advance, neither has Melbourne with Viney. What the talk is that rather than having to bid a 1st rounder next year in an uncompromised draft they can trade a relevent pick to GWS to get them to prelist the 16 year old as part of one of their allowances which leaves their pick in next years draft untouched and they don't have to go through the bidding process for father sons.

Sons of Broderick, lambert and Weightman could prove a formidable midfield. Have to be cautious though Tom Roach never made it nor did Raines really. On the other hand Richo was brilliant.

Infamy, how can Melbourne say the have signed Viney for 5 years then?? Not having a go just not sure how it works?
Melbourne secures Jack Viney with five-year contract

Infamy, how can Melbourne say the have signed Viney for 5 years then?? Not having a go just not sure how it works?
Infamy has it wrong.
Melbourne secured young Viney two years before he is eligible for the draft to eliminate even the remote possibility an imaginative Adelaide might have connived to pinch him under an arrangement via Greater Western Sydney.
In effect, he has been contracted for five years, with a playing contract for the period 2013-15.
He is secure so long as the club is prepared to match the best of any offers from opposition clubs at the 2012 draft.
It will cost Melbourne their first pick.

Jay Schulz has jumped the shark

I most certainly don't have it wrong, Melbourne know he will cost them their first pick in an uncompromised draft next year so will be trying to use the GWS benefits to get him this year for less.
-
Dude, they already have him. Signed. Sealed. Delivered.
They don't need GWS as they are prepared to give up their first pick because Viney is touted as a top 3 pick. It's locked in. Their first round pick next year WILL BE USED FOR FATHER-SON.
Which is why he is already training with them.
FFS.
-
Get it through your head, if they trade through GWS this year to bypass the father son bidding process then they can still have him at the club and still keep their first round pick next year. If they fail to trade with GWS then they can still take him next year with their first pick. They know he'll be there one way or the other, its just a matter of which vehicle they use to do it.
Edit - Link to the Emma Quayle article on this issue is right here. (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/clubs-strike-it-rich-on-early-calls-20110414-1dg07.html)
-
Melbourne have already committed to take him under Father-Son in advance. That is a fact.
Essendon hasn't been able to list one of their father sons in advance, neither has Melbourne with Viney.
Yes, Melbourne have. He has put pen to paper. Get it through your head. You have it wrong.
GWS can't list him as one of the 17yr olds then on-trade him to Melbourne BECAUSE HE HAS ALREADY SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH MELBOURNE.
Melbourne would need that contract torn up, which isn't about to happen. This is different to the Daniher kid who has not signed anything, merely committed to Essendon over Sydney, and the Collingwood bloke.
Sometimes Quayle wouldn't know if her box was on fire.
-
His contract means nothing until such time he is on the senior list via one of the methods the AFL has available for clubs to aquire players. The 5 year deal is purely a statement of intent, not one that is valid now. He can be training at the club now because the AFL allow this for eligible father sons.
GWS absolutely can list him as one of the 17 year olds because they can't pick these 17 year olds themselves, they MUST trade them to another club. His contract with Melbourne means nothing because the AFL won't recognise the contract until he is on a senior list. The contract doesn't mean he gets to bypass the draft, he still needs to register for it as that is how Melbourne will select him. Even Adelaide were hoping to use this rule to get Viney by getting GWS to list him as a player so Adelaide could trade with GWS and get him before Melbourne could take him with their father son selection but they were undone by the fact that GWS doesn't get to pick the 17 year olds they list, it is done during the negotiation process with the club.
Melboune have every right to tell the player that they definitely will take a player under the father son process, however this still doesn't mean he's on the senior list as he's not, he can't play a game with them, he can only train with them which he can do anyway.
Stop being so pig headed and just admit you are wrong.
-
Whatever the ins and outs of the GWS sh¡t are, you are wrong that he hasn't been secured in advance. Melbourne have him.
Stop being so pig headed and just admit you are wrong.
-
Of course he's going to Melbourne, but he's still not on their list yet. Melbourne still have the opportunity to trade for him with GWS at the end of this year instead of waiting for the end of 2012 to take him as father son.

You're telling me... at least I know I'm right
I provided evidence from an article and you just refuse to believe it
Try doing some bloody research to prove me wrong
-
you've already been proved wrong about Melbourne securing Viney early, he's there, with his pretend meaningless contract in hand, untouchable by any other club
Tiger-from-Tas now has the answer he was looking for
move on buddy
-
The only thing you've proven is how wrong you are.
Any father son candidate can train at the club he is eligible for, that is why we had the story many years ago about getting future father son candidates down to the club even when they are 12-16 years old. Viney training at Melbourne now is nothing new and still doesn't mean he is on their list.
Look at the article about the signing of Jack Viney (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/jack-viney-commits-to-demons/story-e6frf9jf-1225959360745)
- So the first two years of the contract are effectively non-AFL related as he cannot play, the 2nd two years are fixed as per the AFL standard player contracts for draftees and he gets a 1 year extension on top of that.
- It refers to the GWS deal that Adelaide were wanting to use but
- It turns out that Melbourne can use the same mechanism to get him on their list sooner and this was reported in the link I provided earlier
Or is this article wrong too?
-
that article is correct and states he is secure, well before the draft, which is what Tiger-from-Tas asked and you said wasn't the case
which proves you were wrong :cheers
-
NO, he is not secure YET, he is secure WHEN the Demons match the highest big in 2012... read the article it's right there in plain text
HOWEVER they can secure him SOONER by dealing with GWS
That has been my point the whole effing time
-
Tiger-from-Tas now has the answer he was looking for
move on buddy
I have more than the answer, this thread is gold :lol :lol
I want you two to keep going till one of you get hurt :lol
-
no other club can touch him = he's secure
they've already committed to matching the highest bid in 2012, Schwaby has said so
and they'll be applying to the AFL to allow him to play for the Scorpions next year

"Welcome to the Melbourne Football Club"
"He's a Melbourne player from this point onwards"
There will be no trading with GWS to try and get him for a lower pick. Locked away. The father-son paperwork is probably already filed at AFL House.

Doesn't Lambert have a couple as well? It would be a nice kick along if we were top 4 on the ladder and got a boost along with a cheap pick up.

What would top things off over the next few years is to start getting some father sons of note coming through. Anybody know of any notables on the radar? Seems like ages since we had one even close to the radar
-
From memory a few years ago, the surnames Weightman (x3) Pickering (x2) were bandied about in discussion. Not sure what age now.
Im pretty sure Campbell has an 11 year old and Knighter has a couple of boys around that age.

Not that long tony.
Morris :thumbsup

Taylor is the youngest of 33 children raised by Tina and Tony Petrenko.
Taylor and his wife Taylah have 18 boys, 3 sets of sextuplets, and they are all showing remarkable NRL, AFL and boxing skills.
Canberra Raiders and Norf are in an almighty battle to lure/keep Taylor on their playing list. He has played 89 unforgettable games with Norf and 11 more this season will see Norf get their hands on all of the Petrenko boys.
Alex Conti has 5 boys, the youngest Harry is already 6 ft 3 and dominates Auskick against other 5 year old boys.

Craig Lambert said in his tweet, it's up to where the boys want to play. (if they're good enough)
The Father-Son and zone selections are considered equal. So it'll be up to young Lambert to decide if he wants to come to Richmond via the F/S rule or go to GWS via their zone selection.

Ray Hall's son is regarded as clearly the best 15 year old in NSW, if not all of Australia.
Rayzor finished on 99 games :facepalm
I wonder if we could rookie him next year and play him once as a sub v GWS?
Always a couple of rookie spots that are essentially unused anyway, be worth it for a gun player.
I like it!
whilst this is stupid if the kid continues to develop then youd have to do it. put Ray on the rookie list for 1 game and qualify the kid.
Sign them up as NSW scholarship kids ASAP.
Is that scheme still going or do GWS get all the kids?
Not sure how it works now.
There is a B. Lambert playing for the GWS Giants U15 squad. I wonder if father/son overrules zone selections?
Craig Lambert said in his tweet, it's up to where the boys want to play. (if they're good enough)
The Father-Son and zone selections are considered equal. So it'll be up to young Lambert to decide if he wants to come to Richmond via the F/S rule or go to GWS via their zone selection.

AFL set to introduce live bidding for father-son picks
Jon Pierik
The Age
January 28, 2015
The AFL could introduce live bidding during this year's national draft for father-son and academy selections if a proposal put to clubs on Tuesday is passed.
Under the plan, the league would establish a draft value index that assigns a points value for each selection. These points are calculated using statistical analysis of player salaries from 2000 to 2014, which the league says shows the relative market value of players at each draft.
The No.1 pick is rated at 3000 points, with the last pick — No.74 — not having a score. Clubs also must determine whether a 25 per cent discount is applied to both father-son and academy selections, or a 15 per cent discount applied to father-son selections and 25 per cent to academy selections.
The present bidding system is retained, with clubs bidding or nominating for father-son or academy picks. But rather than a rival club securing the player only with its next available pick, which drew criticism last year, the nominating club must use one or more subsequent picks using the value of the points rating.
For instance, Melbourne last year bid its first pick, No.2 overall, for promising Swans' academy midfielder Isaac Heeney, rated a top-three selection by club recruiters. This meant the Swans had to use their first pick, but that was a relatively low 18th pick overall because of where the Swans finished on the ladder. Heeney's selection was dubbed a "steal" by rival clubs.
Under the proposal, with a 25 per cent discount applied as Heeney is an academy player, the Swans would now owe 1888 points (pick two in the draft is rated at 2517 points) and would have to use their first, second (owing 903 points) and third (owing 420 points) round selections. But they would not entirely lose these second and third-round selections – they would shift to the end of the draft.
If a team has leftover points or is in debt, this would carry over to the next year.
It is envisaged that clubs would be given greater time in the draft count to determine whether they would bid for a father-son or academy player, potentially adding more drama to the night.
The idea was developed in conjunction with the player movement advisory group and endorsed by Melbourne University's department of economics.
If introduced, the new system could lead to clubs having the opportunity to exchange future draft picks – that is, in drafts outside of the immediate one.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and Hawthorn counterpart Andrew Newbold last year urged AFL chief Gillon McLachlan to change the bidding system for academy and father-son players.
AFL general counsel Andrew Dillon said the league wanted to introduce a more equitable system, all the while ensuring the northern-state clubs continued to invest in their academies.
"The draft is in place to ensure equitable access to player talent for all 18 AFL clubs, while acknowledging that we do wish to encourage investment in the development academies and preserve the tradition of allowing players to follow their fathers and play at the same club.
"A revised bidding system would seek to provide consistent and objective compensation for father-son and academy selections, while continuing to incentivise clubs to select father-son players and invest in their local academies to continue to grow the overall talent pool for the AFL."

Aren't Broderick & Lambert's sons highly rated for next year's draft? Great timing for Richmond - yet again.
-
Keep it how it is IMO. First, Second and third pick for Heeney would be unreal considering the amount of money Sydney put into their academy.

I've looked into Richmond, apparently Craig Lambert's son Billy is in GWS's academy, he's eligible in 2016
Paul Broderick and Chris Naish also have sons eligible in 2017, they're both playing for Northern Knights U16 this year.

I'm happy for a fair system but I'd like to see it weighted slightly in favour of the 'home' club to keep the tradition alive.
Thought the changes to the system currently worked pretty well.

I've merged and moved the father-son discussion thread to here.

Did you think it wasn't always going to pan out like this.
Only at Richmond can we get bent over by a father son

Of course, the club would be all over this and lobbying against the changes :nope
Effing clueless

Sean Bowden's 19 year old son, Michael, is playing in the NEAFL this year for Northern Territory Thunder.
Thunder to unveil next generation of football family
12.02.2015
By: JESS WEBSTER
neafl.com.au
NT THUNDER will unveil the next generation of a proud football family this season when Michael Bowden makes his senior NEAFL debut.
The 19-year-old is named after his grandfather Michael, who was a member of Richmond’s 1969 premiership side.
His two uncles Joel and Patrick, and father Sean, have all represented the Tigers at AFL level.
The young defender returned home to Darwin from Melbourne late last year after attending boarding school at Caulfield Grammar and one year at university studying environmental biology.
As one of the most exciting young players in the NTFL for Southern Districts, Bowden’s left foot kick is one of his biggest weapons aswell as his running capacity.
In his very first training session with NT Thunder, he ran a 14.8 on the beep test, finishing equal first at the club with Chris Dunne.
“It was definitely a no-brainer to sign with NT Thunder,” Bowden said.
“It was my goal when I started the NTFL season to do as best as I could and hopefully get signed. When they offered me a contract I was over the moon.”
The club hopes Bowden can fill the void left by two-time NEAFL Rising Star nominee Errin Wasley-Black, who left Darwin to join SANFL club West Adelaide.
Bowden represented the Territory as an over-age player at last year’s National Under-18 Championships while playing football for Caulfield in the VAFA, and wants to take his game to the next level this year.
“(The demands) are full on - there is no time to muck around. Playing against the AFL Reserve teams is a bit daunting but it will be a good experience and hopefully I’ll be able to develop from it.
“I want to be the best I can and try and keep my spot in the side and become a reliable player out of the backline.”
Bowden has plenty of family support around him in Darwin, in particular uncle Joel who remains passionate about Territory football.
The 265-game AFL player, two-time All-Australian and past president of the AFL Players Association joined AFLNT as its new stakeholder manager late last year.
Bowden has taken a gap year in his studies to focus on his football in the hopes of emulating his family’s success at AFL level.
“My family has been a big influence on me to go as far as I can and do my best,” he said.
“Any young kid that has half a chance would dream of playing AFL.
“My dad is very proud. We sat down and had a bit of a chat about what I wanted to get out of this year. He is happy and so are my uncles, so I can't wait to get stuck into it.”

This Bowden wouldn't be a F/S as Sean only played a few games. Has Joel got any kids?

He has four children, at least one of which is a boy.

But can he play?

Craig lamberts oldest son (he has 3) will be eligible next year
-
I would be so pleased to see some quality father sons coming through our club in the next few years to compliment our list
-
There could be another Northern Knights’ player on Richmond’s list in the not-too-distant future . . .
The Tigers are closely monitoring the progress of talented father-son prospect Patrick Naish – and they like what they’ve seen so far from him.
Patrick is the son of Chris Naish, who played 143 games for Richmond from 1990-97.
He was recently awarded an AFL Academy scholarship following his impressive performances for Vic Metro at this year’s under-16 national championships.
Young ‘Naishy’ likewise shone throughout the 2015 season at under-16s level with the Northern Knights.
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/2015-12-04/greenbergs-grabs-national-and-rookie-drafts
-
That will be right, we finally get some F/S options when they have started costing an arm and a leg.
-
Jesse Maxfield, the son of former Sydney Swans and Richmond midfielder Stuart, will play for the Sandringham Dragons this year and the Swans will monitor his progress across the year. Stuart played 204 games for the Swans between 1996-2005, but his 89 games for the Tigers will see him fall short of qualifying as a father-son option for Richmond.

Your club's future father-son prospects
Herald-Sun
5 April 2016
Looking ahead to future drafts, Richmond could have its first father-son pick since Tom Roach in 2003 in Patrick Naish, son of Chris who played 153 games for the Tigers from 1990-97. The Northern Knights midfielder was awarded a scholarship to join the AFL Academy after impressing for Vic Metro in last year’s under-16 carnival on the Gold Coast and is high on the radar for 2017 draft.
Bailey Lambert, son of Craig, is a member of the GWS academy.

Exciting Richmond father-son prospect Patrick Naish has been selected in the AFL Academy’s level two squad for 2017, which was announced today.
The highly-skilled, speedy, 17-year-old son of Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the Tigers from 1990-97, is one of 30 members of the level two squad, featuring those young players eligible for next year’s (2017) National Draft.
Patrick has spent 2016 as a member of the level one squad of the AFL Academy, as well as playing TAC Cup football with Northern Knights and school football for Ivanhoe Grammar.
AFL Academy coach Brenton Sanderson rates Naish highly...
“He’s played a lot of school footy this year for Ivanhoe (Grammar), but he’s back now playing with Northern (Knights),” Sanderson said on this week’s edition of AFL.com.au’s ‘Road to the 2016 Draft’ podcast.
“I think he’ll play a fair bit in the midfield in his draft year... more wing and maybe some inside mid work.
“At the moment, we’re seeing his best footy across half-back.
“He’s a very good decision-maker and exceptional kick... a perfect set-up kick across half-back.
“Looking forward to a really developing year (from Naish) this year into, hopefully, a dominant season next year.
“I really like him. I think he’s going to be a very good AFL talent.”

He looks like another kid we could get very late in the draft or as a rookie who has had a couple of interrupted years at TAC level. He is one of the best juniors I have seen in the earlier representative age groups - my two sons played TAC. Lucky for us there is a club connection so I am sure (or at least I hope) they are aware of him.

Club is well aware of him.

They've probably been aware of him since he was running around in Auskick....most clubs start tracking their f/s prospects the minute they show even a hint of ability...

Can he win his own ball? Dumma won't play him if he can't. :rollin

Father-son prospect learns to tame the Tiger nerves
Callum Twomey in Florida
afl.com.au
January 18, 2017 8:00 PM
PATRICK Naish isn't embarrassed to admit he was overawed when he first trained with Richmond two years ago.
"My favourite player was Brett Deledio growing up, and I couldn't believe I was out there with him at the time," Naish said. "He started calling my name and I was like 'How good is this?' Then Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin did the same and it was great."
Naish, a father-son prospect for the Tigers in 2017, has since stopped letting some of that excitement overcome his time spent at Punt Road.
The son of former Richmond player Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the Tigers between 1990-97 (before 18 games with Port Adelaide), the 18-year-old midfielder has since become a regular face at the club.
Naish began stepping up his involvement with the Tigers after playing for Vic Metro at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. As a player on the Tigers' father-son radar, he did some basic training and kept in touch with people at the club around managing his training workload.
But last year saw the Northern Knights prospect step up his involvement with the yellow and black, going to the club most Tuesday and Thursday nights after school. With every session he became more accustomed to the company around him.
"Last year I got rid of the 'wow factor' and have viewed them as possible teammates or players along those lines. Trent Cotchin took me out for lunch back then and I couldn't believe it, but then last year I forgot about their status in a way and focused on my own footy and my progress and getting the best out of myself while I am there," Naish told AFL.com.au from the NAB AFL Academy's training camp in Florida.
After doing weights sessions at Richmond, the lightly built outside midfielder would often sit down with Tigers assistant coach, and former St Kilda midfielder, Andrew McQualter, to review his TAC Cup performances, another benefit of being linked to the former club of his father.
Despite the time he has spent with the Tigers, including another stint in December last year when he trained full-time with the club as part of the Academy's program, Naish starts his draft season unclear on Richmond's interest in him as a father-son pick. He also knows that, with his draft season yet to begin, he still has plenty to prove.
"They don’t tell me much [about their interest or plans]. I've got to know them on a really personal basis, including 'Dimma' (coach Damien Hardwick), and it's good to chat to them. They've said work on the things you need to, but don't forget the things you are good at and keep trying to make them elite," Naish said.
Naish is keen to develop the contested side of his game, with his athletic style and long kicking the key attributes of his make-up. That process has already started, with Naish making it a priority on the Academy's US trip to come back a better 'inside' player.
The group of 36 prospects, plus four Irish international hopefuls, will train this week at the IMG Academy in Bradenton before heading to Los Angeles next week for more training on their high performance camp, which 13 clubs have sent recruiters to oversee.
Last year Naish spent plenty of time playing as an attacking half-back, but he is keen to move into a midfield role in 2017 as he continues to try to add more weight to his light frame.
He has followed the Tigers closely since his father's career there, and credits his dad for giving the right advice when needed without being overbearing. However, there is one game that Patrick says he has seen replayed plenty of times at home.
"He sometimes brings out the tape of the 1995 semi-final against Essendon (when Richmond beat the Bombers by 13 points), and especially that second half where he kicks a few goals against them," Naish said.
"But he's been unreal in knowing when to hold back with his words when my own coaches need to tell me stuff, and when to jump in and give a hint here or there when I need it. He taught me everything as a little kid."

Richmond has been working closely with Patrick Naish, the son of former Tiger Chris, and he may play for the club's VFL side later in the year.
The Tigers will also have access to Naish's Northern Knights teammate Josh Broderick, whose father Paul played 169 games for the Tigers (as well as 93 for Fitzroy).
At 176cm, Broderick is small but a neat kick and plays as a small defender and midfielder. Naish is a running midfield type with a penetrating kick.

Hopefully with two first rounders (and probably three if Dusty leaves) we don't need to use or are forced to use them on these father son picks.
-
If anyone finds my sons, PM me.
I found one in a sweat shop chained to a sewing machine in Manila, unfortunately one of Duterte's death squads shot another one mistaking him for a drug dealer
-
Ah, P Broderick was one of my favourite players when I was a kid.
If his son is half as tough he's 100% worth a look!
-
Patrick Naish very impressive for the @NthKnights, slots his second to put them in the lead before 3/4 time. #TACCup
kicking is ok- played HBF last yr at Knights. This year more in attacking half and hitting scoreboard.
agile, smart HFF/Outside mid. Reads the play well, but probably needs to work on finishing with his kick.
too early to tell- but some of his traits and smarts suggest 20-40 range at this stage.
Tigers will have the right to match a bid on him, which I'd expect they will.
Haven't seen him [Josh Broderick] play as hasn't played much for Northern Knights. Will see more as the season goes but not as good as Naish.

AFL Draft 2017 picks, prospects, Draft Watch: Patrick Naish Richmond
May 17, 2017 1:18pm
Ben Waterworth
FOX SPORTS
RICHMOND fans, get excited — because your club’s recruiters certainly would be.
Tigers father-son prospect Patrick Naish is working his way up the order of phantom drafts thanks to a stunning start to his draft year, highlighted by his imposing school footy performance last Friday.
In a fairly one-sided game, Naish was a constant threat, booting a whopping seven goals for the game — including five in the first half. It was an especially impressive effort considering he played mostly in the midfield with stints deep forward.
The seven-goal haul was the latest standout individual game for Naish, who has also impressed for the Northern Knights in his three TAC Cup games playing mainly across half-forward. From his three matches to date, he’s rated elite for disposals (18.3 per game), uncontested possessions (12.3), marks (4.7), score involvements (7.0) and goals (2.0).
“His start to the year has been really good in terms of doing what he normally does with ball in hand, but then defensively he’s improved his tackling efforts,” Knights talent manager Rhy Gieschen told foxfooty.com.au.
“He’s also holding himself well in contested situations having really improved after a big off-season in the gym, getting himself bigger and stronger.”
A class act with a beautiful penetrating kick and big bag of tricks, Naish is the son of former Richmond player Chris Naish, who played 143 games with the Tigers (1990-97) before adding another 18 games with Port Adelaide.
The 18-year-old has had an association with the Tigers over the past two years, spending time at Punt Road alongside some of the club’s biggest names at training sessions. It has been an excellent preparation for life at Tigerland should his name be called then matched by Richmond on draft night.
“The first year was pretty eye-opening, training with Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin every day. It was pretty weird at first,” Naish told TAC Cup Radio.
“It’s been my dream to play for Richmond my whole life.”
Naish said his dad, who is now chief executive of the Reach Foundation, had been a wonderful influence, particularly off the field.
“I don’t put pressure on myself that much. I go out there and perform and try to control what I can control. But dad helps me out tremendously with off-field stuff, like how I act off the field and how I can make myself a better person,” Naish said.

Just quietly is he a good trainer?

He is getting more expensive by the minute. We may have to organise a 2nd rounder now.

Hopefully Dimma will be gone by then and will not have the opportunity to Dimmafy him.

Ruan Dog is right, we'll need an early second rounder at this rate :-[

The Richmond father-son prospect has pieced together a strong season. Naish can play as a midfielder or on a flank at either end, with his running ability and line-breaking dash offering something different. He combines that with top-end kicking – he's a controlled kick on the run and a nice set shot for goal. He kicked seven goals recently at school level. The Tigers will have first call on the son of former player Chris.

OK, how ?, who bids on him to cost us a first rounder ?
I hear Carlton like him, no way with there first though, so say their 2nd & they finish 16th so 912 points minus 20% so now = 729 points, that equals 2 3rd rounders & carry a bit into 2018 draft
-
Or if someone bids too high just let him go and call their bluff.

I was speaking figuratively not literally, as I think Dooks was as well but I don't want to speak for someone else.
I have no idea where he will get drafted. He just seems to be burning it up and creating a lot of attention. So it will be just our luck he attracts a first round bid before ours. That is all I was alluding to.

RICHMOND father-son prospect Patrick Naish was one of a stack of draft hopefuls to star in Vic Metro's 22-point win over Vic Country on Saturday.
In a high quality game at Punt Road Oval, Naish gathered 24 disposals, nine marks and kicked two smart goals in Metro's 15.7 (97) to 11.9 (75) win as the reigning title holders remained unbeaten heading into the final two rounds of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
Naish, the son of former Tiger Chris, has spent plenty of time at Richmond's headquarters through the club's father-son program and continued his impressive season at the venue with his foot skills and hard running taking the eye. He shapes as a top-20 pick at November's NAB AFL Draft.

Richmond father-son Patrick Naish stars against Allies in U18 Championships
July 6, 2017
Riley Beveridge
FOX SPORTS
RICHMOND father-son prospect Patrick Naish stole the show as Vic Metro claimed back-to-back national under 18s championships titles on Wednesday.
Playing predominantly across half back, Naish continued his fine carnival with 26 disposals and five tackles in the competition’s final match to further build his standing as a potential first-round pick ahead of this year’s draft.
Hoping to become Richmond’s seventh father-son selection — and its first since Tom Roach in 2003 — Naish showed plenty of promise at Kardinia Park.
The son of Chris Naish, who played 143 games for Richmond and 18 for Port Adelaide throughout the 1990s, Patrick was prolific and clean by foot.
The Northern Knights youngster was tested in the midfield at times and relished the additional on-ball minutes — a good sign for Richmond recruiters.
The Tigers are well placed to match a bid for Naish at season’s end, given they presently hold two first-round selections — their own (currently Pick 15) and Geelong’s (currently Pick 16), which was given to the club by GWS in a trade for veteran utility Brett Deledio last year.
Naish’s performance came despite Vic Metro being upset by the previously winless Allies, who stormed home to win by three points in a dramatic clash.

Another stand-out performance by father-son prospect Patrick Naish will have Richmond supporters excited, but there’s a downside to the exciting midfielder’s emergence this season.
Naish has been one of the stars of the AFL’s under 18s championship, leaving no doubt the Tigers will snap him up in this year’s draft, but it looks like it’s going to come at the price of a first-round pick.
Before his recent great form the club would have been thinking a second or maybe even third rounder would get the job done, but there’ll definitely be pressure put on by other clubs bidding for the offspring of 143-gamer Chris.

Callum Twomey has Naish going at pick 14 in his latest phanton draft.

as long as no one in front of us nominates him in the first round we can still take 2 first rounders from the draft and nab him at a bargain basement sum price of our next pick

If we use our first 2 picks and get Naish later (whether a "real" pick or a combination of a few later ones for points) then I think we'd have done alright...
Reckon plenty will try and force us to take him early though, a bit of payback even

Fox Footy has Naish going at 11.
11. PATRICK NAISH
Clubs: Northern/Vic Metro
Position: Half Back/Midfield
Size: 180cm, 69kg
Bio: Richmond fans, get excited. Eligible as a father-son with the Tigers, Naish enjoyed a solid champs campaign where his standing as a genuine first-round prospect was enhanced each week. A classy and speedy ball mover off half-back, he also has the ability to push onto a wing and kick a goal. His dad Chris played 143 games for Richmond and you can expect the Tigers to match any bid for him around this position at season’s end.

At no stage we can afford to give up either of our 2 first rounders for this kid. We simply don't need the type of player he is that much unless it's for a bit of a gift, which is what the father and son pick should be IMO.
I liked Chris Naish as much as the next tiger supporter but I like the RFC more and if that means we miss out on him so be it.
We need KKP more than HBF'ers
-
Just let clubs have their father-sons FFS.....good luck to 'em if they score a gun or two for nothing...it all evens out over time anyway....
-
agreed on both counts above ^^
-
All because the northern clubs sooked it up about bidding on academy players...which they get every year and are usually guns as oppossed to father-sons who come around maybe once or twice a decade and good ones even less frequently....

What if Geelong win the flag, pushes that first rounder out to about 22/23. Would you take a potential top 10 pick for 22?

Yeah kinda disagree. If Geelong were forced to use higher picks on FS players they would have had about half the champions they ended up with. I'm not really suckered in by the romance of F/S at all. If a kid is a jet and the son of a gun he should still have to go wherever the draft tells them to, reckon its unfair on the other draftees that don't have the choice.
-
Thev reality is it happens once in a blue moon while northern clubs get gun kids nearly every year....it's hardly unfair....nobody even cared until Neil Kurley or Cornes or whoever it was sooked it up when Adelaide joined the comp and forced the AFL to raise the qualification from 50 to 100 games and nobody cared again until Fathead McGuire sooked it up over the academys which brought all this up again....

Chris Naish father-son: Richmond yet to commit to Patrick Naish draft pick
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
7 July 2017
FORMER Richmond forward Chris Naish says the recruitment of his son, Patrick, to Punt Road would be a dream come true.
But despite a brilliant national under-18 championships the Tigers have stopped short of committing to silky halfback Patrick Naish, a potential first-round pick in November’s draft.
Medium-sized defender Patrick yesterday won All-Australian U18 honours after averaging 519 metres gained — the No.1 ranked player in that category — across the four games.
He averaged 89 ranking points, an elite 22 disposals and kicked three goals, but won only 22 per cent of his disposals in the contest.
The Tigers have their own first-round pick (currently at pick 15) and Geelong’s first selection (pick 16), with Naish likely to be a late first-rounder.
Under the AFL’s father-son bidding system, playing their hand early would be counter-productive given they have to match a rival bid.
AFL Academy member Naish spent time at Richmond over the summer and still attends Richmond games with 143-game Tigers veteran Chris and siblings Xavier, Rose and Charlie.
“He would love to play for Richmond and he would go to any club to get an opportunity, but he has got a real soft spot for the Tigers,” Reach Foundation chief executive Chris Naish said yesterday.
“Richmond often drop him a line and encourage him and wish him all the best, but nothing more than that.
“I don’t think they are allowed to either. They would have wanted to look at his carnival and sit back and see how it unfolded.
“He is enjoying himself and having fun and getting a few kicks, but at the same time he has a lot to learn which is a part of being 18.”
The Northern Knights prospect first spent time at Richmond after the nnder-16 carnival and spent some Tuesday and Thursday nights there last year.
In December he completed another training block with the club, thrilled to be taken to lunch by Trent Cotchin and develop a relationship with Damien Hardwick.
“He had the two weeks there and loved it,” Chris Naish said.
“If it did fall that way he would be more familiar with some of his idols who he loves watching. “He loved training with Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin and rubbing shoulders with some of the young guys.
“We still go as a family to watch, all four kids and my wife and I follow the Tigers, so no doubt it would be great (if they drafted him).”
Naish will play another game and a final for Ivanhoe Grammar then finish the TAC Cup season at the Northern Knights.
Chris Naish played for eight years at the Tigers then added 18 games in two years with Port Adelaide before working with the NBL and as the CFO of AFL SportsReady.

I would trade the 2 picks for a top 8 pick if it could be worked out and go after Jack Higgins then get Naish on the matched bid.

Just my opinion.
Plays hbf, wing, hff. Proven goal kicker. Proven defensively.
A 10-15 ranked pick we can snare for one of our picks which will probably be later.
Let free agency and the other pick address our second tall fwd option.

He wasn't ranked this high until the Champs, all of a sudden he is a first round pick?? I'm
sure if he wasn't the son of an ex player you wouldn't want us to draft him at pick 15 odd.
I wouldn't use a first round pick ever on a HBF, wingman or HFF.
Draft genuine mids or KPP and the wingman, HBF and HFF will take care of themselves.

Hes proven enough to be rated where he is. And i think we need damaging outside players with straight line penetration - run and carry with long kicking. We dont have enough of em.
Weve had a pretty good run with injuries but look at blokes like Hunt and Lloyd getting games. Naish could play either role and be more accountable.
To load up on talls with both of our first two picks and free agency would be foolish when theres only 1 spot available.
By all means grab a couple but Naish will be a very good player and fit well into outmr side.

Thats where we pick up a free agency tall and a first rounder tall. And if necessary another later in the draft. Which is probably what will happen. Plus you have Chol Garthwaite and Broad who would have had 3, 2 and 3 years in the system by then. Plus Callum Moore.
We dont have enough damaging flankers and wingmen who can run and carry. Getting a guy like Naish at around pick 20 is a steal. Will walk into the side round 1.

Father-son hot form could force Tigers to pay high price
afl.com.au
11 July 2017
PATRICK Naish's impressive season sees him likely to become Richmond's first father-son pick since 2003, but the classy midfielder's form has also created an interesting situation for the Tigers.
Richmond has a strong hand at this year's draft, holding two first-round selections – its own (currently pick No.13) and Geelong's first-round pick (currently No.16) which was on-traded to the Tigers last year from GWS to secure Brett Deledio.
Should the Tigers hold on to their two first-round picks during the trade period, they will be desperate for a bid to come on Naish after they have already used their early selections on other players.
But the 18-year-old's excellent season – he was last week named in the NAB AFL Under-18 All Australian team – has seen him rise into top-10 contention for some clubs.
If, for instance, a bid for Naish came at pick eight (worth 1551 points under the AFL's draft value index) at November's draft in Sydney, the Tigers would need to match the bid with 1241 points after their 20 per cent discount.
They could do that with their next pick (No.13 is worth 1212 points) which wouldn't impact the place of their next pick (No.16 is worth 1067 points).
However, if a bid was to come earlier than No.8 and the Tigers' first pick didn't have enough points value, their second first-round pick would get pushed back to make up the difference.
Under the live father-son and academy bidding system, if the Tigers used their two first-round picks before matching another first-round bid on Naish, their first-round pick for next year would be pushed back equal to the points they owed to bring him in.
The Tigers don't have a second-round draft selection at this stage having traded it last year, but that won't restrict their ability to nab Naish.
Naish is the son of former Tigers forward Chris, who played 143 games for the club between 1990-97 and kicked 212 goals.
The Northern Knights prospect averaged 21 disposals across the carnival, including a stellar finish to the championships against the Allies last Wednesday at Simonds Stadium, when he gathered 26 disposals.
He has spent plenty of time at the club in recent years as part of its father-son program, with recruiting manager Matt Clarke telling the Road to the Draft podcast earlier year the club wasn't too fussed about how high his form might have pushed him.
"We probably don't look at [where he sits in the order] too much at the moment, that's for sure," Clarke told AFL.com.au in May.
"We're probably just tracking all the areas of his game that he needed to improve on. Others may be able to give you a bit more of an insight into where he sits, we're just more concerned about the small things in his game he needed to work on and if he's ticking those boxes.
"He tends to be doing that at the moment."
The Tigers haven't had a father-son pick since they took Tom Roach, the son of former champion Michael, in 2003. Their most successful father-son has been Tigers legend Matthew Richardson, while former defender Joel Bowden also joined as a father-son in the 1990s.

No need to use next pick now for points value, subject to 20% discount

Keep in mind we traded our 2nd round pick last year as part of the Prestia trade.
I doubt he will go earlier than pick 8. I'd call the bluff and let him go at this stage.

Well you'd hope in a highlights package, they'd be able to pick out more than just two good kicks....I've seen better highlights from kids who turned out to be complete duds.
Having said that I've also seen three full matches of him and whilst he's not quite as bad as Hunt at this stage I wouldn't give up any more than a third rounder ...only thing I'll say in his defence is that there weren't that many others who really stood out and looked like first round material either and it does appear to be a below average year for talent.

We are so short on KPP's that our first 2 picks need to be used on those needs. If we can get him later on in the draft all good and well.
We can go a long way in fixing our KPP needs this off season if we are smart. A couple of FA and draft smart and we get back in the game.

Clubs circling Richmond father-son prospect Patrick Naish
Herald Sun
July 18, 2017
RICHMOND looks set to pay a high price for potential father-son pick Patrick Naish as clubs circle for the gun son of former goal machine Chris.
Sam Landsberger revealed on the SuperFooty Podcast that “there are clubs in the lower regions of the ladder which really, really like Naish” and that could force the Tigers to give up more than just a first-round pick.
“They’ve got their first father-son since Tommy Roach about 15 years ago,” Landsberger said.
The Tigers will have two first round picks, their own and another from Geelong, thanks to the trade that sent Brett Deledio to GWS.
“I think it’s a good thing they’ve got two, because not only will Naish cost them one, I think he might bump back their second first-round pick, because they’re going to have to pay a really high price,” he said.
Landsberger said other clubs love Naish’s ball use.

stuff off Sam, if any club wants to use a top 5 or top 10 pick for Naish they can have him, laughable that we'd use both
what a stirring fwit
-
Interesting that Brett Anderson said on SEN today that someone would have to bid for him in the top 10 to force us to give up a first round pick and he doubted very highly that any one would.
Brett has him rated somewhere between 17 and 25 with his biggest deficiency being his decision making.
He said as long as he wasn't nominated within the top ten we could make up the points outside of using our first round picks and even go into points deficit next season if we had to.
I'll see if I can find a link to the conversation but he was on air with Francis Leach just after one o'clock.
-
...or we could just pass on him altogether..... :shh

Fits in well decsion making lol.

I'll see if I can find a link to the conversation but he was on air with Francis Leach just after one o'clock.
I'd take him with the combination 3rd and 4th round picks for sure.
-
Interesting that Brett Anderson said on SEN today that someone would have to bid for him in the top 10 to force us to give up a first round pick and he doubted very highly that any one would.

I found the link, the Naish talk starts at 16.15.
Click on the link and scroll down the list to "Brett Anderson on Afternoons"
After listeneing to it again Brett said if I bid comes in before our first pick we have to use our first pick regardless.
What I heard yesterday was him saying ideally no one bids on him before us and we can then make up the pints through later draft picks ect.
Apologies for the confusion.
-
So what if we trade both our first round picks before the draft? Which is a very real possibilty.
-
we go into 'debt' next draft. so our first rounder next year will take the hit of the points we owe this year, therefore we will likely have our first pick in the 2nd or 3rd round
-
Hope not - from all reports next year is supposed to be a super draft and one you want to be in.
Mind you they say nearly every draft is either a "super draft" or "shallow/weak" until about 6 months out and most of them have ended being of fairly similar depth & quality....though from what I've seen, I reckon they might be right about this year's being weak...though only a few months ago it was being touted as a "super draft for talls".....

The difference with the Clokes was that they were eligible for both Collingwood & Richmond and had the choice.

Terrific that the sons of Tiger greats Dale Weightman and Craig Lambert are training with Richmond VFL. Good luck to Kyle Weightman and Bailey Lambert. Tigers do it very well at VFL level - and AFL level too!

Son of a gun nominated for Eastern league Young Gun award
Paul Amy,
Greater Dandenong Leader
8 May 2018
Bailey Lambert grew up in Brisbane and Sydney.
But a few years ago he gained an appreciation of his family’s ties to the Dandenong area.
On an AFL grand final weekend, his father, Craig, took him for a drive around the town, pointing out and talking about the places of his upbringing.
Lambert senior is one of Dandenong’s most famous football products. He played with North Dandenong juniors, winning a succession of best and fairests before going on to a distinguished league career with Richmond and Brisbane.
Later, he took on welfare roles with the Lions and GWS.
When Bailey was born in Brisbane in 1999, the Courier Mail newspaper pinged a pic of him with Craig and his mother, Melissa, a Lions scarf keeping him warm.
He was an early starter in Auskick. “I’ve played footy all the way through,’’ he said. “As long as I can remember it’s always been there.’’
A promising under-age player for Morningside and then Drummoyne, Lambert was in the Lions Academy and turned out for Redland in the NEAFL last season.
At the end of it, he decided to relocate to Melbourne and try out for Richmond’s VFL team.
That meant leaving his close family behind at age 18. The Tigers were mindful of the father-son connection but made him no guarantees. Still, more than once coach Craig McRae noted his dedication.
Two days before lists were due to be submitted to the VFL, Richmond told him he had made the cut. He’d been made to sweat.
“I was very, very nervous until they called it,’’ he said. “If I didn’t make it I was going to go back to Redland.’’
Lambert also needed a local team. Fittingly, he found his way to Noble Park, Greater Dandenong’s leading club. Richmond general manager Anthony Fagan pointed him there after speaking with Noble coach Mick Fogarty, who played with Craig Lambert at the South Melbourne Under 19s in 1984.
Bulls football manager Steve Coats goes back even further with Lambert senior: they played little league together in 1979.
And there was another link — Melissa Lambert’s parents, Richard and Noeline Williams, are long-time Noble members.
The onballer was quick to make an impression in the practice matches. “He’s a beauty,’’ Fogarty said in March, grateful for a late signing. “Really strong inside mid and a good user of the footy. Great kid too.’’
Last week Lambert produced his best game for the Bulls, kicking two goals as his father watched on from the balcony at the Moodemere St ground.
The day after he turned 19, he found out he was the Round 5 nomination for the Eastern league Young Gun award. “Nice one,’’ he said.
Lambert said his father had been a constant support.
“He really has helped me a lot,’’ he said.
“Big thing from him is, ‘The harder you work, the luckier you get’. You’ve got to push harder than everyone else. A lot of it’s not down to ability, it’s how hard you work.
“I think it’s helped that we’ve been hanging around AFL players pretty much all my life. You get to see what it’s like to be an AFL player.
“I’d like to get there one day, go as far as I can. Hopefully I can have a good year in the EFL and get a couple of VFL games and maybe push my name up.’’

Fathers and sons: Who's on the radar?
Jennifer Phelan
afl.com.au
May 8, 2018
RICHMOND
On the horizon:
The Tigers have another Rioli in view with Maurice jnr, son of the late 118-game Tiger Maurice, recently moving to Melbourne to board at Scotch College, where cousins Cyril and Shannon were schooled. He's only 15 and eligible for the draft in 2020, but he's already showcased his skills, defensive pressure and ability to find the goals in his first season with NTFL club St Mary's last year. Fremantle is also eligible to recruit him as his father played 168 games for WAFL club South Fremantle, but his closeness to current Tiger and cousin Daniel and the fact he's already in Victoria could prove decisive. The Tigers also have the Northern Knights' Xavier Naish eligible next year, younger brother of Patrick, who they drafted last year, and son of Chris (143 games), while Zac Knights, son of 279-game midfielder Matthew, is on the Geelong Falcons list and eligible this draft.
Watch list:
There's been a flurry of girls born at Richmond in recent years, which bodes well for the Tigers' incoming AFLW team should Harper and Mackenzie Cotchin, Zoey Richardson, Sarah Houli, Indi and Macie Newman or even Milla Deledio have an interest in following in their dads' footsteps. As for boys, fans will have to wait awhile to see if toddler Sonny and baby Spencer Grigg have the back-up rucking ability of their dad, or if Oscar and Phoenix Johnson are in a position to choose Richmond over Adelaide given Kane played 104 games for the Crows before 116 in the yellow and black. But, they might get to see Harry Broderick sooner, with the athletic midfielder currently impressing as captain of Fitzroy's under 14s.
Past father-son successes: Probably the most famous combination is Alan and Matthew Richardson, with the pair combining for 385 games. Michael Bowden had two sons play for Richmond, Joel and Patrick, after his 59 games that included the 1969 premiership. Joel went on to play 265 games for the Tigers while Patrick racked up 25 after 50 for the Western Bulldogs. Francis Bourke played 300 games for the club before his son David ran out for 85.

The main thing that bugs me about this is that when the two main criteria for NGA eligibilty are indigenous and ethnic backgrounds, we're the only club without a zone in either the western states which are the hotbeds of indigenous talent and we're the only club without a zone in a metro area where the vast majority of ethnic kids live....seems like it kind of puts us behind the eight-ball to start with... :shh

there are large sudanese enclaves in Shep etc & large indigenous populations in our NW vic zone, not perfect but not as bad as you are suggesting I dont beleive
-
There are big differences in the skill pool of various indigenous communities.
The Northern Territory seems to have developed far more indigenous Afl players than Victoria.
To that point I can't remember any gun indigenous player coming from northern Victoria.
Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory have produced an amazing number of talented indigenous players.
Wirrapunda is the only gun I can remember and he came from Gippsland.

Firstly, the clubs had to accept what was given to them by the AFL and so I'm not sure how you can say the club got it wrong. Secondly, this is something that can't be judged in a short time. Give it 5 to 10 years before we can see how good or bad the zones are to all teams before being too critical.
-

just because a couple of clubs got lucky with their timing, NM with tassie & Tarryn Thomas & the scum with Quaynor, doesn't mean we got it wrong.
if the NGA has started 3 years earlier we could have got Jarman Impie

The simple solution to this is to transfer either Hawthorn's Metro or their NT Zone to us. :shh

2019 bloodline prospects: Who's eligible for your club?
AFL.com.au
Callum Twomey
Feb 6, 2019
Richmond could add another Naish to its list with Chris' son Xavier able to join brother Patrick at the Tigers
Premiership Tiger Jason Castagna's brother Aaron will play for the Northern Knights.
The Eastern Ranges are full of strong football bloodlines. Dale Weightman has two nephews at the club – Connor Weightman and Will Parker.
The family trees of this year's draft pool extend a couple of generations down the line. Tom Green, who is eligible to join Greater Western Sydney as an Academy player, is the grandson of Richmond team of the century member and triple-premiership player Michael Green.

Elijah Hollands, the son of former Richmond player Ben, has already shown recruiters he looms as an early selection next year.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-04-11/crow-greats-son-on-draft-radar-with-u17-australian-selection
VIC COUNTRY
20. Elijah Hollands 25-Apr-02 188cm 80kg Murray Bushrangers Wodonga Bulldogs Caulfield Grammar
#20 Elijah Hollands
A classy forward who just has that knack of finding the goals, he was disappointed in himself missing a few early chances, before kicking two for the game, including a natural instinct shot off the left to win the game for the Bushrangers. Hollands also shows good second efforts, giving off a quick handball before following up with a tackle immediately after.
#20 Elijah Hollands
Hollands was consistent over four quarters and never seemed to fade out of the contest. He was a solid target up forward for the Bushrangers, specifically in the final term when he had a couple of shots on goal that only failed to register a score because of the tough weather conditions. Hollands also displayed his athletic ability, footy smarts, and foot skills throughout the game.
#20 Elijah Hollands
The bottom-age talent showed his class early inside 50, winning a number of possessions on the outside and using his long kicking ability and was one of the top ball winners in the first half. He missed a few opportunities to capitalise from set shots, finishing the game with 1.3, but he timed his leads well, protecting the drop zone with his timing. He was quieter in the second half, but his first half showed the potential he has not only as a forward, but further up the ground as well.

Among Australia's eye-catchers were vice-captain Elijah Hollands, who hails from country Victoria and is the son of former Sydney, Richmond and West Adelaide player Ben Hollands.
The athletic 187cm, 71kg forward-midfielder provided consistent drive for his team throughout the match, finishing with 24 possessions, seven marks, six inside 50s and three goals.
The only blemish on the 2020 draft prospect's polished performance was his four behinds, but he was still comfortably in the best players.
Wodonga Bulldogs product Hollands is an instinctive player, reads the game well, is strong in the contest and boasts a neat step through traffic.
A student at Caulfield Grammar, he is enjoying a promising start to the NAB League season, where he averages 17 disposals for the Murray Bushrangers.

Any word on how Xavier Naish is going? Isn't he eligible this year?
Yep, he is.
Hard to find any info about him though this year. His stats page says he only played in the first two games of the NAB League for the Northern Knights (old TAC Cup). He may be playing for his school (Ivanhoe Grammar) but I can't find any info about that either.
The only other info is from Knightmare on BF:
Can play defence or wing.
Small and light at 178cm/68kg. Very outside and has yet to have an impact at NAB League level.
Will need to improve to get drafted.
He projects to become something like a VFL equivalent of Jayden Short.

EDIT: Having said that, Knightmare's assessments aren't always on the mark. :shh :shh

Good things happening at historic Cheltenham FNC. The Rosellas last won a first division premiership in 1934. Now former Tiger Des Ryan has them in a second semi-final against Shane Morwood’s Dingley. By the way, look out for Ryan’s son Finn, 17. He can really play.

Finn’s up: Ex-Tiger Des Ryan won Frankston’s best and fairest in 1994 and captained the Dolphins. Now his son Finn, 18, is training with the club. He’s also a chance to play at the Sandringham Dragons as a 19-year-old. He’s a nice prospect. 🐬

This week’s nominee has quickly earned the praise of his coaches and teammates since joining the senior ranks this season. Bodey plays with a level of courage and intelligence well beyond his years and at just 18 years of age, it’s exciting to think just how good he can get. A key contributor to the Bat’s early success, Bodey was once again one of UTS’s best players in a narrow round four loss to the reigning Premiers, Sydney University.

There you go Tiger Supporters. Another potential Father/ Son to end up at Tigerland. Samual Frangalas, son of former Richmond Great Gary. I’m not sure if he’s eligible for the father son, but because of Gary’s playing days at Tigerland I thought I’d give this boy a head start, to claim him first. We all know Gary was recruited by the Tigers from the Sydney Swans where Gary played mainly on the ball and Half forward.
Samual Frangalas at a height of 186 cm and plays as a Mid/Fwd, and a healthy 87 kg and still 16, and the boy is still growing.
David Clencie the Tigers should be looking into this boy, maybe you should be giving Gary another interview to find out more of this potential Tiger star.
Gary if your reading this keep your boy in good stead

Not available as a F/S as his father only played 21 games for us in 2005-06 but nevertheless the son of a former Tiger amongst other clubs.
Max Knobel
State: Victoria Country
State League Club: Gippsland Power
Community Club: Maffra
Date of Birth: 27/06/04; Height: 206cm; Weight: 91kg
A developing young ruckman who is still learning his craft but showing real potential after a late growth spurt. A neat left-foot kick, he was Victoria Country’s leading ruckman, playing all four matches over the 2022 NAB AFL National Championships U18 Boys. Was also a mainstay for Gippsland Power in the ruck, averaging eight disposals and 17 hitouts across 12 matches. Knobel is the son of former AFL ruckman Trent Knobel, who played with the Brisbane Lions, St Kilda and Richmond across a 75-game AFL career and is now part of the coaching panel with the Power.

We'll find out this year. The talk was Charlie was/is the most talented of the Naish brothers. He was on the fringe of the Knights squad last year. If he's any good, he should become a starting 18 for them this year and be regularly named in their bests. The Knights' first game of the season is next weekend (March 25).

A number of father-sons will also be off-limits to their tied clubs given the 100-game minimum requirement under father-son qualifications.
Harry Scott, whose father Allister played 19 games for Richmond, is a midfielder.
Former Tiger and Swan Gary Frangalas' 68-game career means his son Sam Frangalas will not be eligible as a father-son.
There are some more distant relations – Dustin Martin's cousin Jedd Denahy is back as a 19-year-old.
Nate Caddy (the nephew of retired two-time premiership Tiger Josh) shapes as possible top-10 selections after an impressive bottom-age season.

-
Should the children of premiership players automatically become eligible for father-son selection?
That is what Geelong’s Isaac Smith wants after he became a premiership Cat last season.
Watson: “I respect his opinion and he’s right to express it. I like it when people bring up these things, particularly current day players, but I don’t support that.
“Because I think we’ve got it right. I think it’s the recognition of tenure at a football club. To have played 100 games means that you have been associated with a football club for a long time.
“You can come in and play three games at a football club, it could have been (Marlion) Pickett who played in that Grand Final which was his first senior game for Richmond. Premiership player and then under what Isaac is saying there, that would qualify any of his sons to be Richmond players.
“I disagree with it.”
Lyon: “Why? He’s a life member as a result of it.”
Watson: “That’s true but that is a Richmond decision that he’s a life member, that’s not an AFL decision.”

does anyone have a stat on F/S turning out to be guns? don't most of them fizzle or are underwhelming with weight of expectation? i've got recency bias with patrick naish, tom roach, andrew raines. i think it's a nice unique afl tradition but i think too much emphasis gets placed on F/S which might be driven with ablett and Silvagni type narratives

AFL Draft intel: All the latest news and the top 50 Coates Talent League prospects ranked after round 2
A Richmond father-son has made a strong start to the season
Chris Cavanagh and Dan Batten
HeraldSun
April 6, 2023
Richmond father-son prospect Charlie Naish is pushing for Vic Metro selection after an impressive first two weeks of the season.
The son of former Tigers midfielder Chris, Naish recorded 20 disposals, five inside 50s, eight score involvements and three score assists for the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League last weekend.
“His footy IQ is probably his most impressive trait,” Knights talent manager Nat Grindal said.
“He just sees and understands the game so well. Our game against the Rebels last year, the wildcard game, it was pretty tight and he ended up with the ball and he had the composure to know to slow it down and find a couple of other options. If the game ends up in someone else’s hands, the game probably wouldn’t have ended up like it did. He was one of the reasons we got over the line. He’s a good user of the ball.”
Naish is the younger brother of Patrick, a fellow Knights graduate who was drafted to Richmond under the father-son rule in 2017.
Naish is hoping to spend more time onball for the Knights this year, having primarily featured on a wing and across half-forward last year.

If the younger Naish is finally a decent F/S and worst a first rounder, then we could get him for a bargain with our second rounder (our first pick). We would just have to match the draft points.

Richo's instagram:
Fun day today at @richmond_fc We launched the Matthew Richardson Academy which aims to connect past players and their families to each other and the club. A few yarns were told. It means a lot to me and my family to have my name involved. My family's connection with Richmond started in 1959 when Dad arrived at Punt Rd from Casterton. Ended up being a premiership player in 1967 and was a passionate Tiger for the rest of his life. The story continues 🐯

Imagine if he had 3 boys. There would already be pandemonium
-
Champion player but an even better bloke much like Jack Dwyer, the fame didn’t go to their heads and they treated people with respect and as people
I remember a day when Richo was watching the tigers when injured and people kept coming for an autograph when he obviously just wanted to watch the game , he didn’t turn them away he just kept signing with a smile and some eye rolling😁 while I was laughing at people's rudeness

I used to go to the family days when my son was little and Richo would be first out and last back in signing autographs and meeting the kids. In contrast, players like Nathan Brown were last one out and first in.
Richo was always a top bloke and always gave the time for the kids.
-
I remember walking into a Richmond dinner many years ago and almost being bowled over by Richo, playing chasey (it appeared) with Andy Kellaway. Big kid. Love him.
-
I've probably posted this before but I used to nurse Alan and once his mum Jen (?) also. Both beautiful people.
Richo visited them always, and his dad was in hospital a lot those last few years.
Bumped into him visiting his mum and I couldn't think straight or answer anything he asked me about his mum. Was just too nervous and my wits deserted me completely. He was enormous. I managed to make small talk about the tigers beating the pies on the weekend but couldn't do much else.
I wanted a photo and autograph so bad but restrained myself given the circumstances. The girls weren't too shy to ask though and I just felt bad for him.
-
How did Richmond F/S Charlie Naish go (IIRC he was listed wearing #14 for Vic Metro in game 2)?
Popped up a little bit, I've been impressed with his early season form in general though, not jumping out as a top ender ATM but I think he's got better traits than his brother

Naish is another prospect who has broken into representative consideration at Talent League levl, and showed a few more signs of his class on Saturday. The Richmond father-son candidate started on a wing and was relatively quiet, but began to get his hands on the ball once shifted to half-back. He took a couple of intercept marks and was typically productive in transition, hitting passes on the move.

TIGERS EYE FATHER-SON
RICHMOND father-son prospect Charlie Naish spent part of the school holidays training at Punt Road, as he continues to emerge on the radar of recruiters ahead of November's AFL Draft.
The 17-year-old is eligible to join the Tigers via the father-son rule after his dad Chris played 143 games for Richmond between 1990 and 1997, before finishing his career at Port Adelaide.
Naish has put himself firmly in Vic Metro contention following a strong start to the Coates Talent League season for Northern Knights.
The Ivanhoe Grammar product produced some eye-catching moments in the Victorian under-18 trials at Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday, playing on a wing and across half-back.
Richmond selected Naish's older brother Patrick under the father-son rule – he played nine games for the Tigers and 11 more for West Coast but is now playing for Box Hill – and will consider playing Charlie in the VFL later in the year.
The Tigers struck gold with Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden in the 1990s but have only selected three father-sons this century. They will be keeping a close eye on the progress of Naish this winter.

A new Tasmanian AFL club is expected to be eligible to bid on father-son draft selections for the offspring of Tasmanian players.
Sources with knowledge of the situation said it was still be finalised, but it was expected the ex-Tasmanian player would still have to have played a minimum of 100 AFL games as the current rules require for a player to qualify as a potential father-son.
The Tasmanian club would then have the same right as the AFL club that the former player played for to match any bid for the player in the draft. For example, Tasmania would have the same priority access to the sons of ex-Tasmanian AFL stars such as Brendon Gale, Jack Riewoldt, or Jeremy Howe as Richmond or Collingwood respectively would. In that case, the young player would then have to nominate a preferred club to go to.

Love this initiative by Richo and the club. Some all-time favs (especially the 95 vintage) amongst those pics. :gotigers

Would Howe and Riewoldt want their kids playing for their current clubs, or for Tassie under father-son/daughter rules?
WATCH: https://twitter.com/FOXFOOTY/status/1654060993029472256
-
I'd say it's more about what the kids want. As if someone is choosing to move states away from family (Gale and Jack live in Vic) to play interstate for a small club over staying at home and playing for a big Vic Club. If any kid does this it's absolutely AFL corruption at its finest.

Pickett has four kids and his eldest two boys, Marlion jnr, who is 13, and Lattrell, 11, play together in the under 13s. They play a bit like Dad, but want to play like Shai. They watch his highlights, so there is no shortage of clips. His boys go OK.
“They could be better than me,” Pickett said. “The older one has got the aggression and speed, the younger one’s got skill, yeah, good around goals. They watch a lot of Shai, Shai’s highlights. Always watching Shai,” he said.
“I’m pretty relaxed [on the sidelines]. I just kind of tell them to work on their work ethic up and back from forward 50.”

There’s an article on AFL.com which talks about KB’s grandsons playing for the Oakleigh Chargers.
Charlie Richardson, 190cm forward playing for the U18s eligible for 2024 draft and Callum Smith, 188cm, playing for the U16s and eligible for the 2025 draft.
No idea if they’re any good and wouldn’t have rights to drafting them anyway.

Albeit it's not Father-Son, it's Grandfather-Son, so I'll plonk it here in this thread.
Edit: You just beat me to it, TK :thumbsup.
--------------------------------------
FAMOUS BLOODLINES ON SHOW
THE GRANDSON of Richmond's 403-gamer Kevin Bartlett made his debut in the Coates Talent League last round.
Charlie Richardson, of the Oakleigh Chargers, is the grandson of the five-time Tigers premiership player and ran out for the first time at under-18 level on Monday against the Sandringham Dragons.
The 190cm forward kicked a goal from 10 disposals and four marks and competed well and will be eligible for the draft in 2024 when he turns 18. He showed some of his marking prowess and smarts in attack.
Bartlett also has another grandson in the Oakleigh under-16s program – Callum Smith, a 188cm prospect eligible for the 2025 draft.

Richmond father-son Charlie Naish boots five goals in private school footy showcase match
Dan Batten
HeraldSun
August 17, 2023
Richmond father-son prospect Charlie Naish kicked a bag of five goals in AGSV’s narrow nine-point loss in its showcase clash against APS.
Naish, the son of former Tiger Chris and young brother of delisted Tiger and Eagle Patrick, finished with 21 disposals, nine marks and 125 SuperCoach ranking points in an imposing showing at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar.
Naish missed out on Vic Metro selection but played for Richmond’s VFL side earlier this season.
But he was outdone by Wesley College forward Ben Hill, who led the APS side to victory with a stunning eight goal haul, tallying 17 disposals, 10 marks and 169 SuperCoach points.
It caps a strong APS season for Hill where he was the third highest goalkicker, including 5.5 against Geelong Grammar in the final round.
Naish’s AGSV and Northern Knights teammate Kristian Ferronato was everywhere, finishing as the top ranked player on the ground with 41 disposals, 18 contested possessions, nine clearances, two goals and 171 SuperCoach points.
Liam Walters continued his recent Coates Talent League form with a team-high 29 disposals, nine inside 50s, six clearances and 135 SuperCoach points for APS, with Scotch College and Sandringham Dragons product Cooper Lord tallying 27 disposals, six marks and 140 SuperCoach points himself.
Geelong Grammar forward Reef Page had 13 disposals, six marks, two goals and 111 SuperCoach points for APS, while Geelong College representative Tom Gorell kicked two majors.

-
Q. Hey Davo. Quick question. Is Charlie Naish likely to be drafted or will he make it to the rookie draft? Or not at all.
A. I'm not sure, in the mid season bigfooty Phantom draft I was tossing up between a few with one of my late picks, I ended up settling with Naish, since then he missed VM selection and didn't really do well at CTL level, also didn't get a combine invite so chances are low.
https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/davo-27s-2023-draft-thread.1339841/page-34#post-81099867

Rookie at absolute best for Naish, huge shame as he was a real chance a year or 2 ago.
-
He'll be better than his brother yet he likely won't even play a single game of AFL and may not even get drafted. Just shows how lucky Charlie actually was. :shh

Just found out that 144-game Richmond player Scott Turner’s son Paddy is a punter at Colorado State University. Put on a beautiful coffin-corner punt to pin rival Colorado at their 2-yard line, looking to seal an upset victory. -B #gotiges #CSUvsCU

Charlie Naish hasn't nominated for the draft.
https://www.zerohanger.com/every-nominated-player-for-the-2023-afl-draft-revealed-145295/

Either hasn't got the heart for it or RFC has told him they'll take him as a rookie.
-
Four players have been nominated under father-son rules. Three - Calsher Dear and Will McCabe at Hawks and Jordan Croft at Dogs - are national nominations. Kynan Brown has been nominated but can't be matched - meaning Demons can automatically list as a rookie if he gets through.

Paul broderick’s son Harry re-signs for 2024? Any OERites have any insights whether he could make the jump from vfl to afl?
The junior Broderick is 18 going on 19 (in Dec), so there's still time for extra development as a footballer. He's a small half-forward (178cm, 76kg). At that size, unless he has exceptional pace as well as footy smarts, then he won't have a chance of reaching AFL level. He played 4 games for our VFL side this year averaging 8 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle & no goals. We would need to see some significant growth in his game at VFL level next season before knowing if he has what it takes to step up to AFL level.
-
Man we really lost out on the father son lottery. Like I guess there’s more to life than football and following in your dad’s footsteps but I can’t believe non of the stars we had in the 80s/90s
Like there’s zac knights, andrew Raines, Tom roach who none became elite. Maybe Joel bowden’s son might become something ? And of course it’s not too late for mrj to find his feet at afl level
-
The Kellaway boys are apparently one's to watch....which mean they'll probably drift into obscurity come their draft year like Charlie "star of the family" Naish has...but hey at at least we have KB's two gun grandsons coming through.....oh wait..... :banghead

Andrew's twin boys. Hopefully they haven't got their uncle Duncan's kicking technique :help.
ps. They could also follow their cousin Campbell (son of the third brother Lachlan) into state cricket.

We should seriously think about deleting this thread :whistle

If the kellaway boys are good expect the afl to announce no discounts on F/S and if they are rated first round and you don’t have a first round you have to pay 50% extra tax or something like that

They will just suspend it for 1 year as part of some BS equalisation rule then reinstate it the following year with more income tax on the top 4 earning sides to support the rest.

12. LOUIS KELLAWAY
(Sturt)
Midfielder/forward, 16, 182cm, 66kg
Son of former Richmond star and Crows physio Duncan Kellaway, Louis isn’t particularly quick but he’s a smart footballer who sees the game well and makes very good decisions with ball in hand. Plays with composure and is a fine link player. Showed he could hit the scoreboard with two goals from his 26 disposals in a standout performance against the Eagles in Round 16, where he also had six clearances and laid six tackles, illustrating his strong all-round game.

Kellaway was one of the more eye-catching midfielders on Sunday, displaying a powerful turn of speed to take ground out the front of stoppages. He looked most effective as the second possession winner, being released on the outside where he could drive his legs and impact in bursts. His handling was terrific too, including with a half-volley in the second quarter, and a stoppage shark in term three where he hit the ball at speed.
It doesn't say his name on the site - it does on the tab - but this is Jack Leys stats for Woodville-West Torrens U'16's

Could the children of all Tasmania born players to hit the 100 game mark at any club be available as Devils father sons or daughters? So the children of Matty Richardson, the Riewoldt boys, Jeremy Howe, Toby Nankervis and many more? How it might play out

It is otherwise a relatively small father-son pool, with Collingwood having first call on Tom McGuane, the son of former Pie Mick, while Richmond has access to Louis Kellaway, son of former Tiger Duncan.
