Richmond makes play for GWS midfielder Dom Tyson
Jay Clark
From: Herald Sun
October 01, 2012
RICHMOND'S desire to snare Greater Western Sydney midfielder Dom Tyson, 19, could be aided by the Western Bulldogs.
The Tigers are intent on securing the prized onballer, but have met resistance from the Giants.
But the Dogs could help by being party to a three-way deal, which will be raised during this week's draft camp.
Under the proposal, the Tigers would send pick No.9 to GWS for Tyson.
The Giants could then on-trade pick No.9, and the first selection in the mini-draft of 17-year-olds, to the Western Bulldogs. In return, the Dogs would hand picks No.5 and No.6 to the Giants.
It is understood Richmond and the Bulldogs are in favour of the deal, but may have to include later-round picks or players to sweeten the package for the Giants.
GWS was last night playing hard ball.
"It is absolutely not going to happen," Giants football chief Graeme Allan said.
While the sticking point is Greater Western Sydney's reluctance to move Tyson on, the plan would make the Giants big winners at the national draft.
It would give Greater Western Sydney picks No.1, No.5 and No.6 next month.
Tyson, a Trinity Grammar School and Oakleigh Chargers product, remains open to a move home to Melbourne after returning from holidays this week.
While the 2011 No.3 draft pick is contracted for next season, talks this week will help make clear whether the left-footer wants to remain at GWS beyond his current deal.
The Western Bulldogs are keen on gaining the first pick in the 17-year-old mini-draft to nab classy Western Australian utility Jack Martin.
The goalkicking midfielder would provide the pace and polish for which the Dogs are searching.
The Dogs will not part with picks No.5 and No.6 for Martin alone, but would be willing to do a deal if they receive pick No.9, originally belonging to the Tigers.
Under special AFL rules, GWS has the ability to trade access to the country's two best 17-year-olds (born between January-April 1995).

I hope this works out :pray

Why would.any team want to keep any player who.seriously coed not want to be there.... Gws are stuff wits.. Don't they realise that if they don't trade Tyson now he will leave next yr anyway.. stuffing idiots
-
sounds too complicated, GWS being prima donnas over it.... let the pillaging begin :shh
-
Like GWS are just going to roll over and let other clubs take whoever they want. They are only doing exactly what I would hope we would do as a minimum.

No way, we are getting screwed in that deal. Post is worth a top 10 pick easily.
Give them Webberley for a pick in the teens. They need fast, outside, mature bodied runners, the only reason he can't get a game for us is because of our amazing list and depth. He'd be best 22 for 17 other teams.

-
What a treat if we get this bloke. Will probably slot into foleys role nicely when he gets injured again :banghead
-
The Western Bulldogs have been in discussions with Greater Western Sydney about a possible deal to secure Jack Martin as one of the two 17-year-olds available in the mini-draft.
http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/afl-news/st-kildas-turn-to-go-shopping-20121002-26xgg.html#ixzz28ANsmZRV
If the doggies can convince the Giants that gaining picks 5 & 6 in exchange for an unknown 17 year old plus another kid who wants out is worth their while then we may have a shot at Tyson. It seems we'll need to chuck into the deal more than just pick 9 (ie. another player) to appease GWS.

Is it too late to offer webberley? :lol

Jacko has fantastic radio interview skills. :huh
-
Yeah give em white. He can fill the role of "ageing player still with a modicum of pace that may retire next year" left vacant by Luke Power.
-
Nahas for Tom Lee as an extra.
We get Tyson and Lee.

Dom Tyson has been favouriting Tiger Tweets :D:
Was having a discussion on twitter this morning and mentioned that Dom would be a welcome addition to our midfield, an hour later the tweet was favourited by Dom himself. Hopefully that's a good sign of his intentions.
Dom has favourited, in recent days, the following tweets from others:
"Come to the tiges mate. Best club in the land".
"He can come to the Tiges but he CAN'T have the No.29"
"Please come to Richmond @DomTyson29! I promise to get your number on my back. #moveoverastonmartin"
He is right into his Tigers. Openly.

Id thought about jackson, but the player has to want to go. White has already said he doesnt care where, as long as he is on a list next year.
Plus the club sees jackson in a different light to most of us.
would be nice though.
-
for all of Jacksons faults and yes he
has some, he is held in high regard
within the playing group and within
management within the organisation.
testemant to the Jim Stynes award he won.
then again its silly season but he would want
to go as he is under contract isnt he?
lets get this kid from GWS. :thumbsup

Richmond remains optimistic of snaring Greater Western Sydney youngster Dom Tyson, as part of a three-club deal involving the Western Bulldogs.
Under the deal the Giants would gain the Dogs' picks five and six in exchange for the rights to midfield prospect Jack Martin in the 17-year-old mini-draft, and possibly another teenager, Jed Anderson, who is tied to GWS as a Northern Territory zone player.
The Bulldogs would also receive pick nine from Richmond, with Tyson moving to the Tigers despite having completed just the first of his initial two-season contract.
Effectively, the Giants would be trading Tyson, last November's No. 3 draftee, for picks five and six.

Correction. They would be trading pick 3 and the mini draft pick for pick 5 and 6. May need a sweetener from us to get it over the line.

yeah, cream puffs are pretty sweet

So is this kid a superstar in the making??
Did he play much last year, how did he go??
-
To get Tyson for Pick 9 is an absolute steal. :clapping We will have to give something else up to get it done I reckon.
Anyone think we'll be able to trade our picks 29 or 31 back into the first round? Maybe a package deal, one of those picks and a player? :whistle

Went ok WAT. Showed a fair bit like many of the GWS kids but rumours abounded for a fair while that his heart was back home so you don't know if that was an on-field influence or not. From http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/D/Dom_Tyson.html (http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/D/Dom_Tyson.html):
Just turned 19, 186cm, 80kgs, played 10 games, averaged 15.8 disposals, kicked 4 goals, 4.6 marks, 2.3 tackles. I think having Mark Williams on board would be an advantage in deciding if the kid was worth pick 9.
And from the GWS site:
Dom Tyson is a midfielder from the Oakleigh Chargers in Melbourne.
Dom is good decision-maker who excels at clearances and winning the contested ball. He has the ability to dispose of the ball even when under pressure or being tackled using his left foot and excellent hands.
He represented Vic Metro at the NAB AFL U18 Championships, averaging 22 disposals at 78.9 per cent efficiency, 11 contested possessions and 3.6 tackles.
The GWS GIANTS selected Dom with pick number 3 in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft.
Was also a Rising Sun nominee in R23.
One way of looking at it is that we are upgrading our pick 9 to pick 3!

Thanks Smoke, looks pretty good on paper...young enough as as you say an upgraded pick...might be a bit of pay back for us after the last two comprimised drafts.

Dug a bit deeper into his season WAT and he missed a number of games due to injury, then played as a sub for a few when coming back so his stats are actually better than what they seem at face value. Here is a bit from a Hun article:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/localfooty/midfielder-dom-tyson-talent-shines-despite-ill-timed-run-of-injuries/story-fn53klc6-1226470984254 (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/localfooty/midfielder-dom-tyson-talent-shines-despite-ill-timed-run-of-injuries/story-fn53klc6-1226470984254)
DOM Tyson, 19-year-old GWS midfielder, might be the only player in the league who wishes the season was longer.
Injury interrupted Tyson's first AFL campaign but he played in seven of the last 10 matches of the home-and-away season and received an AFL Rising Star nomination in the final round.
"For me it would be good to have another month to six weeks of playing," he said.
"I played seven full AFL games, three as sub and three in the reserves, so it's not that much footy.
"Early days I had a few back issues with a bulging disc so I missed a little bit of pre-season, which put me back.
"I played the first two games as sub, missed two, came back to the reserves then I got five games in a row there. I then got a fracture in my shin and that forced me to miss eight weeks.
"So the moment I was playing some consistent footy I was getting injured, so it was frustrating.
"Now I'm looking towards pre-season, staying injury free and preparing as best I can because you don't appreciate how important the pre-season is until you're injured."
Looking at his stats for the 7 full games he played he averaged 19.7 disposals, 6.1 marks and 3.1 tackles.
-

Thing is though the Mini Draft picks have to be traded – well they don't have to but the Giants can't use them – so if they don't take this deal they will have to deal with another club and as far as I can see the Dogs have the best available offer. The Giants won't want the Dogs to walk away from this IMO.
-
Exactly. Melbourne won't give up pick 4 (pick 3 being used on Viney going off reports) which means the next 2 picks could be theirs if they give Footscray the mini draft pick (which they can't use). Footscray will be keen for us to get involved, seeing we have a decent pick at 9 and they obviously want an early first round pick.
Win - Win - Win for all parties really.
-
So is this kid a superstar in the making??
Did he play much last year, how did he go??
Watched Dom play live in a number of games and two of the most notable things about his game was his composure and his disposal by hand and foot which was above average for someone at his stage of development. He was prone to getting knocked off the ball at times by bigger bodies but he has the frame that suggests he will bulk up quite easily. He's very much like a Simon black type in the way he looks like he has all the time in the world to do what he needs to do. In a couple of games he had strapping on the shoulders but I think this was purely precautionary. He is not afraid to get into the hard stuff either as he copped a few heavy head knocks going for the ball but kept on ticking. :thumbsup
So it would be a huge get if we can sign him up.

GWS should just let these players go, just like Brisbane did with a few of their players albeit older ones.
Honestly they will only lose out in years to come when there is a mass walkout, like next year.
Bite the bullet GWS, let them go, redraft players that want to be there and move on.

Giddeup Simmonds >>>>>> Dom Tyson
-
Was told this week that could happen by the weekend.
My source who is a recruiter from an AFL club not to be named has said talks were ongoing today and nothing has changed since earlier in the week where Richmond were confident. Guess we will find out soon enough.
I think Richmond won't give up on this for a while yet. They want Tyson.

From Emma Quayle's twitter:
Paul Ager @RT_73
"So the Dogs and Giants are rumoured to have agreed to trade 5&6 for MD 1 and the Dogs will NOT get pick 9 as GWS won't deal Tyson to Tigers"
Emma Quayle @emmasq
"dogs aren't doing that without getting a pick back"
Paul Ager @RT_73
"under the deal Tigers had proposed they would have got MD1 and pick 9 in return. Unless GWS trade Tyson it's not going to happen now"
Emma Quayle @emmasq
"may yet happen. Big call for GWS to make"
"[they kinda have to say that publicly for now. would obviously depend on what's in it for them. losing tyson for 5&6 not a bad result"
"they can't just let a top 3 pick walk out the door, it would have to be a great deal for them. they have to dig their heels in"
-
I guess Emma has the gift of stating the bleeding obvious.....
-
Hope it gets done, although it was always looking unlikely

Yep old pic of Joel. Looks like Ray Hall.

Tigerbob reckons it could happen soon.
Who?
Tigerbob from BF, seems to have good sources. He says that this weekend Tyson could announce publicly that he wants a trade.

Be over the moon if the pull this off, we will owe the doggies one too

No he didn't. That's where he played the end of his career and was one of the best players each week until they rightfully gave him a send off game.

In further good news for GWS, on top of the appointment of senior coach-in-waiting Leon Cameron this week, Dom Tyson is staying put, despite an initial desire to return to Melbourne and play with Richmond.
The teenager, who was a Rising Star nomination towards the end of the season, was open to be traded to the Tigers, but is contracted until the end of next season and will remain with the Giants.
Richmond was hoping to be a part of a three-club deal with the Western Bulldogs to land Tyson, who played 10 games in his debut season, finishing the year with a bang by gaining 26 possessions against North Melbourne in round 23.

So basically GWS are going to develop him for us so he can slot in our midfield next year . Thx fools
How is that going to happen exactly?
Just reading between the lines for me he will walk uncontracted next year aiming to get to us , Falafels will want something decent for him of course and we will have to give it because he wont last long in a preseason draft ...
I am guessing our pick 9 from this year will be probably wearing a giants jumper in 2014 , depending of course on the quality of the player in question if his qualities are less he will go with someone like Jackson for mine
-

Agreed mate one can dream though your point is right

the pick nine is supposed to get ontraded to the doggies
-
the pick nine is supposed to get ontraded to the doggies
Take Tyson out altogether, why not do a ménage a trois with GWS and the Doggies to get picks 5&6?
If the Doggies want that 17 yo pick, they can cough up those picks and get our pick 9,we give pick 9 and a dan Jackson and boom tish!
-

We certainly need to strike whilst we can. I sense it's this season or we'll miss him altogether.

Agree with you Daniel regarding Nahas, need to give up someone considered in our best 22-25 you'd think.
Besides surely Knights easily covers losing Nahas?

Ch 7 sports report said GWS want two first round picks in exchange for their mini-draft pick (Jack Martin) and they mentioned the Bulldogs picks 5 & 6 as potential suitors.
I hope they are unable to off load their mini draft picks!
Talk about wanting others to pay overs!!!!!!!
-
They got pick 4 for O'Meara who I rate higher than Martin. They want 5 AND 6.
Talk about greedy!!!
-
They are becoming the new essendon at the trade table. Must be a sheeds thing, they'll learn pretty quickly that if they burn their bridges nobody will deal with them down the track
-
I still think this has legs. Good judges have said that the Bulldogs 5 & 6 is contingent with them getting Jack Martin and nothing worse than a mid 1st round pick back. ...meanwhile Dom and the RFC have subtlety signalled their intentions...........GWS need a third-party in order to get that mid 1st round pick for the Dogs.
Unless Dom comes out and categorically says that he will not be involved in a trade this year I can see this going down to the last minute of the trade period. From where I sit both the dogs & tiges can walk away and not lose a thing whereby the GWS might have to accept a lower bid for those in the mini-draft and risk losing Dom next year anyway.
Update: Thought I'd drop into BF to see if there was any more news and spotted this quote:
"Dom Tyson@DomTyson29
Just to clarify, very happy at @GWS_Giants. Looking forward to first full pre-season and catching up with the boys in November! #gogiants"

Clearly the Giants have come down hard on him.
Not that it would have made a huge difference but said it before that he was dumb to have favourited those Richmond related tweets so pretty obvious that they've made him toe the party line with that latest tweet.
Imagine if a Richmond player did that?? :wallywink

Although I agree things look bleak, in reality little has changed since the start of the week!
It seems likely the club made him send out the message and remove the tiger stuff from his favourites.
He isn't in the group of players that signed contract extensions.
He and his family have close Richmond connections.
He is very likely wanting to come home.
We just have to come up with the right deal. Easier said than done. :pray :pray :pray :pray

To be perfectly honest I can't see the AFL letting this go through regardless. If Dom is allowed to leave it sets a new precedent for all other new Draftees to break contract and leave after one year. The last thing the AFL want is a mass exodus of first year players going home or to clubs of there choice just because they feel like it. At the end of the day the draft is a raffle, all the kids no that before they nominate and simply if they don't like it, don't nominate.
If Dom is desperate to get to us he will so down track but for now he just has to suck it up, have a pee poor season next year so we can get him for next to nix next year ;D

money talks TFT and i believe the only reason they wont deal is because the deal isn't that strong in their eyes.
Thrown in one our best 22 like Nahas and i'm very sure they will be singing a different tune

I don't disagree Dan, just saying I doubt the AFL would let it happen regardless. It was public knowlage that Anthony Rocca never wanted to be a Sydney but still had to sit out his two years there, Caddy last year never got done and it seems what started out to be a very hot rumor regarding Tyson has has a massive amount of cold water poured over it!! It just seems as though the powers to be have stepped in on all of the above :shh

Eff them!
They chose to horde their elite end draft picks instead of trading them out for seasoned players so what more do they expect!

very true
nothing suprrises me with twinkle toe and his side kick in charge

GC SUNS @GoldCoastFC
We have secured selection 1 in the 2012 trade incentive mini-draft & will select boom W.A youngster Jack Martin.
------------------------------------------
Our Tyson trade idea was already dead but weren't the Dogs after Jack Martin if they got a mini-draft pick? They'll probably keep hold onto picks 5 & 6 now.
-
Yup, but from a GWS perspective, is pick 2 better than having picks 5 and 6? Especially considering they have pick 1 already :huh I'm not so sure it is.
-
Yup, but from a GWS perspective, is pick 2 better than having picks 5 and 6? Especially considering they have pick 1 already :huh I'm not so sure it is.
so let me get this straight
GWS had to onsell that pick to the highest bidder so they chose GC in exchange for Pick 2, yet declined pick 4 and 5 from the doggies
gee i agree not a wise choice by GWS
-
For this exercise, I'll refer to mini draft pick 1 as 'Jack Martin'.
GWS were going to lose Dom Tyson and 'Jack Martin' but gain Pick 5 and 6
Dogs were going to lose picks 5 and 6 but gain Jack Martin and Pick 9
Tigers were going to lose Pick 9 but gain Dom Tyson
Obviously that was the 'basis' of the deal, we were going to have to give a little more down the order and the Dogs as well, so GWS would have received maybe a 2nd rounder and exchange of other picks.
--------------
Deal that went through was GWS got pick 2 from GC for Jack Martin. I think they exchanged compo picks as well, not sure what round etc.
-
Tyson to Richmond still a possibility.
Source: Mrakov Throat
-
If it happens, it'll get done very late in the piece. I reckon we should still be pushing very hard with that pick 9 and some of our later picks/players (Nahas, Graham, McGuane, Post, White etc.).

good point Hutchy, lets hope wise heads prevail.
i just think they may.
-
Would not be suprised if they did, but GWS will not want to let it be known they are willing to get a trade done. They hold more power appearing opposed to it.
-
Cameron's appointment may substantially reduce any GWS player exodus next year. I've got a lot of time for Bake's and he may end up convincing young players like Tyson to hang around so I think the window of opportunity to get him is NOW!

That goes for Josh Caddy as well according to the guy on the AFL website live chat. These compo picks are worth more than fixed picks as they give clubs flexibility in what they do with them as you can use them now or in the future. That's why Geelong is now favourite to get Caddy.

OER when a team receives compensation picks/pick for losing a player to free agency(example Goddard) do they have have to be used in that years draft or are they the same as these compensation picks for players lost to the new expansions teams and have a few years window to use.

Well, the first two picks from the mini-draft are gone, which means the bulldogs trade isn't happening anymore. Looks like we'll have to give up more than just pick 9. Don't think players like Post or Graham will have much currency, getting more and more unlikely I reckon.

So how could the Cats get Caddy but we can't get Tyson, weren't they both under contract, is it that GWS just won't play?
-
So how could the Cats get Caddy but we can't get Tyson, weren't they both under contract, is it that GWS just won't play?
Caddy was out of contract this year so he was free to leave and the Suns had to do a deal or they would've got nothing in return. On the other had Tyson is contracted so he can't walk out of GWS unless he sits out of footy for the next two years. Tyson is in the situation this year that Caddy was in last year when Essendon tried to poach Caddy.

Blair Hartley (from one-eyed's post in the other thread):
As was well publicised, we were interested in trading for Dom. Unfortunately Dom still has one year to run on his contract at GWS, and he has decided to play out his contract with them. We will continue to look at all avenues to improve our list, both in the short and long term.
Sounds like they will be right back into Tyson next year. Also interesting to read Hartley's comments about first talking to knights 2 years ago. Obviously the club is prepared to take a longer term/patient approach to getting players they identify to the club

Going to be difficult IMO.
-
Will be very hard getting Dom, everyone will be chasing him next year. We will have to give something big to get him. Our first round draft pick wont be enough as other clubs will offer higher picks and GWS will want a top 5 pick or a very good player and a lesser pick.
We wont be able to get him through the pre season draft either, anyone with pick 1 will snap him up, which would probably be GWS.
What can we give up to get him next year. GWS need forwards. Conca and our first round pick could do it.
-
Dom will tank 2013 lol
-
Conca and our first round pick could do it.
Conca? Who's to say he won't have a breakout season next year? He's played 1 season more than Tyson!

I'm very glad the Pope isn't managing our list. I think he might actually be Craig Cameron, especially after reading that Lucas Cook thread

We'll get him next year.
But if he comes on in a big way in 2013 we wont.
Going to be difficult IMO.
Hopefully we have an over abundance of key talls this time next year. Astbury in form, Griffiths, Elton showing signs, Post (if he's still around) finally coming on.... then we'll have some valuable trade bait.
-
i hope they continue to be flogged by 10 goals every week, crowds remain sub 10k, and they are embarrassed in the sydney media on a daily basis ie about inch of copy on page 10

Finals are a must to make tigerland a lucrative place to join next year
Build it.... And they will come.... :shh

Gieschen outlines the meeting he had with Richmond about Greater Western Sydney youngster Dom Tyson. The Victorian was a mad Tigers fan as a kid.
The potential trade was discussed in-house and they realised they couldn't guarantee a deal would get done, so it was knocked on the head.
Tyson is happy at the Giants. The No.3 draft pick is out of contract at the end of next year.

GWS banned Tyson from speaking to Richmond players on social media. They know he's going home next year and we know they have him when we have a big chance when he's uncontracted. We're willing to give up our first rounder and a player.
-
We won't get him next year.
Collingwood probably will. Magical space in the cap.

Bumpity Bumpity:
Got some pleasing news from a bloke I go to the footy with regularly. He and I have grown up in the same area as Dom and my friend is the same age as him. Anyway, one of his friends is close mates with Dom and according to him Dom is very homesick and still dead keen on coming to the tiges. He will see out his contract at GWS and then promptly GTFO of there.
Sounds like Dom will be playing for his beloved tiges in 2014. :thumbsup
-
gonna be tough to get him next year when we have such a low first round draft pick after winning the grand final...

Just keep in mind a lot can happen in 12 months in regards to his situation, his clubs situation and Richmonds situation. Not over the line yet.

His current situation is that he is a die hard tiger fan and wants to be back with his family in Melbs. We'l soon see how much that changes.

Tigers have played it to perfection. They know that with another year under the belts of the GWS young guns, the giants will be on the look out to complement the youngsters for a tilt at the finals in 2014 with an experienced swing man (McG), a goalkicking half forward (A Edwards), and a speedy super-sub (Whitey). We can fill all their needs with players conveniently signed on 1 year contracts. Well played Tigers, well played. :clapping
-
all well and good but we wont have much currency in terms of trading......unless we tank
How much currency do we need? HE is likely to say 'trade me to Richmond or i'l walk in the draft'
I guess it comes down to whether GWS will play hard ball or not.
-
Won't happen, so far away from the end of next season it aint funny...
So much can happen between now and then I doubt very much he will come.
One thing. I am certain of though is that we will. Find a good uncontracted player to bring on board next year, just not convinced he will feel the same way in 12 months time

Caddy situation v2.0.2
Agree. It's highly unlikely. Especially if we make the 8 next year.
-
Caddy wanted to go to Essendon last year and now has ended up at Geelong who finished higher than Essendon this year.
Has nothing to do with what draft pick we get, it comes down to what GWS will ask for Dom and whether we have it to trade or whether we are able to trade to get it.
If GWS want a top 3 pick or a top 5 pick and a player we'll need to look at upgrading our first round pick by off loading a player to a club with a pick and then handball that onto GWS. All comes down to what we want to give up for Dom.
Trade 1st round pick (Pick 12) and Shane Edwards to Port for pick 3.
Pick 3 to GWS for Dom Tyson.
Out First round pick, and Shane Edwards
In Dom Tyson.
-
Fair point. Although, I think Dom's desire to come to the promised land is greater than Caddy's desire to go to Tullamarine or wherever the stuff those plebs hang out. Plus the bombers had BJ(s) (pun intended) on their mind this off-season.
But yes, he wont come for free.

Why get rid of our best small forward? Edwards is still improving.
-
Pick 3 would be better than Edwards ever will be. Probably right off the bat too eg Dustin Martin. I certainly wouldn't on trade pick 3 for Dom Tyson...not unless they're chucking in Giles and Jezza Cameron as well.
-
Pick 3 would be better than Edwards ever will be.
Probably.
Have to see how both go next year before packaging Shane with our first selection.
You'd want to be very sure Tyson is going to be a gun and I'm not sure you can say that yet.
-
Yep that's fair enough. And for all we know Edwards could kick 40+ next year.

This is where we need a couple of lesser lights to step up and have seasons out of the box and boost their trade value.
ie. Astbury can't get a game ahead of Rance, Batchelor, Chaplin, Grimes and Griffiths and wants opportunity elsewhere.

Not many would offer Chappy 4 years. Monfries is better. Agree re Surj but he has many injury troubles and you must be joking re Salopek? Hasn't gotten a game in two years for that rabble. Even got dropped to the SANFL twos this year. And Pearcey just got an offer that was too big to match

ONE OF Greater Western Sydney's highest-paid stars has conceded it will be virtually impossible to keep the squad together long-term.
Despite the Giants' raft of salary cap concessions, it's believed many of their young stars are already on the radar of other clubs, with the AFL's newest franchise facing a fight to keep them.
"I don't want to say it's too hard to keep everyone, but I think it almost is," co-captain Callan Ward told AFL.com.au.
GWS faces a potential fight to retain 2011 No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton, while there's been plenty of external interest in midfielder Dom Tyson. There's also been speculation about midfielder Will Hoskin-Elliott.

essendon in some trouble IMO:
they will lose Goddard, Fletcher, Hille, NLM, Davey, Winderlich around the same time.
outside watson to me it looks a weak list.

Hille isn't best 22 and NLM is borderline. Davey would barely be 12 years old and Winderlich/Goddard could play for another 4-5+ years. Fletcher is 79 and still going strong

Prized Greater Western Sydney Giants safe from raids from AFL rivals
Jay Clarke, Jon Ralph
From: Sunday Herald Sun
February 10, 2013
GREATER Western Sydney is on the verge of re-contracting some of its most prized young players, helping safeguard its glittering list from a poaching raid.
The Sunday Herald Sun can reveal three of its top-four picks from the 2011 national draft, including top selection Jon Patton, 19, have agreed to re-sign with the Giants.
The man Richmond made a big play for last year, inside midfielder Dom Tyson (No.3), line-breaking wingman Will Hoskin-Elliott (No.4) and versatile big man Aidan Corr (No.14, 2012 draft) have all made commitments to stay.
The club, which made welcome progress on the deals on Friday, want to make an announcement about the youngsters' agreements in the coming weeks.
But a deal for last year's No. 1 pick Lachie Whitfield has not yet been finalised. The Giants are confident of extending terms before the end of the year.
The commitments are a major coup for the club, as it strives to keep its batch of youngsters safe from rival advances.
It is believed the youngsters either will or have signed for another two years, tying them to the club until 2015.
It is known the Giants fledgling young stars have raved about their relationship with GWS's new senior assistant coach Leon Cameron, who replaced Mark Williams late last year.
A source said Cameron's impact on GWS's first to third year players in particular has been "significant".
The Tigers, where Williams is now a development coach, made a major bid to snare the highly-rated Tyson, 19, last year, offering their first round draft pick for the prolific ball-winner.
Tyson has been laid low by a posterior ligament injury, but has been carefully managed by the Giants to help the Oakleigh prodigy return about mid-season.
Patton, the hulking key forward, has also been widely hunted but is set to stay at the Giants, helping make one of the formidable burgeoning big man partnerships with Jeremy Cameron.
Patton has been linked to Hawthorn, as a potential replacement option for Lance Franklin, if the out-of-contract All-Australian leaves Waverley.
The new contract agreements are a major accomplishment for Giants bosses, led by CEO David Matthews, list manager Steve Silvagni and veteran football manager Graeme Allan.
Despite the interest of Victorian clubs, the Giants have made an excellent start to keeping their list together.
A GWS spokesman said the club was happy with its list management progress as the club approached its second AFL season.
"Developing and retaining our best talent is a key priority for the GIANTS," the spokesman said.
"Last year we re-signed 13 players, including seven of our eight NAB Rising Star nominations, to long term agreements.
"We are not in a position to comment on any other players because nothing has been finalised at this stage but it will remain a key priority for the club as the year progresses."

I reckon hes not as good as some have made him out to be. According to some of our supporters the kid was gonna be the next superstar. Has a way to go IMHO.

Ran out of crayons to eat so started sniffing glue? I have a feeling after getting Vlas we may give up on getting Tyson. WHE would be nice though.

So what exactly are these deals, Ralphy?
Dom's a comin.

Dom signed a contract extension today with GWS.

fair-dinkum that much?? Considering they have $cully on a mill a season and the big re-signs of which Dom is one, surely in a couple of yrs time they will be struggling bigtime top hold onto their 25 1st round draft picks. By that stage we should be well and truly in our window.

Pretty happy we got vlast :shh

They have a higher salary cap of about $2 m. It's a joke

Yeah me too. Don't think Dom is going to be any where near as good as Flossy.

Yep, game time on offer too. Tiges drove his price up nicely though, little bit of pay back ;D

All the big clubs like ours will just wait for free agency and all these players will walk for free.

Aren't these blokes about 7 years away from being eligible to be free agents?

Still be interesting to see if your little bird is correct when the time comes. Bookmarked bojan.

Dom Tyson reveals how close he came to joining Richmond
By James Dampney
afl.com.au
Thursday, February 28, 2013
EXCITING midfield prospect Dom Tyson has revealed for the first time the temptation he felt to walk away from Greater Western Sydney and join Richmond, the club he supported as a boy.
Late last season Tyson, 19, was heavily linked with a move home to Melbourne to join the Tigers.
Amid reports he was homesick, the third pick in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft was the only one of the Giants' record eight Rising Star nominees who didn't extend his contract in 2012.
Out of contract this season, Tyson ultimately resisted the overtures from Tigerland and has extended his deal with GWS until the end of 2015.
"I was tempted, yeah. That's a fair statement," Tyson told AFL.com.au.
"Being a Richmond fan growing up, I always dreamt of playing for Richmond.
"I think they approached my management and I gave it a bit of thought, but it didn't consume me or anything, I was more than happy to stay up here for another two years.
"I knew I had unfinished business here."

And I should be feeling what exactly???
-
GWS should be worried that we'll get him after that contract is up. If he's any good that is.
All VIC's want to come home and this boy will want to come home to Punt road. I'm 100% certaim he'll play in the yellow and black if he is any good after the 2015 season. It's better this way as we get to see if he comes good or not.

Why wouldn't he want to come to us in 2016? [Bummerblitz hat] We will have 2 premierships by then. [/bummerblitz hat] ;D

Ooh dear
What a gun this kid will be
-
Perfect example of how pathetic our recruiting has been.
Should have given up a first round pick for this kid. Blind man could see he would be worth it. Wanted to come home, can't tell me we couldn't have beaten Melbourne for his signature. We were too soft at the trade table. GWS accepted an upgrade on a 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder. Our first rounder and a player would have done the job done.

Now don't make things up.
Melbourne traded pick 2 for Dom Tyson and pick 20 for pick 9 and pick 72 for pick 53. There is no way GWS would have traded Dom to Richmond, we didn't have the currency.
-
Thats true but Pope is right in a way.
Lets be honest even if we did have currency we wouldve found a way to screw it up. The club probabaly thought we have enough midfield depth so dont need him
-
Bit early to write of Vlad
-
There is more to currency at the trade table than draft picks.
The other currency is players.
Part of problem is we never bite the bullet regarding being prepared to trade players with currency.
When was the last time we traded a "name"? I reckon it would be Jeff Hogg ;D
That's part of our problem
-
Good young player. A real shame GWS nobbled us the first time.

Still have a chance with dylan shiels, dont stuff it up tigers :thumbsup

Who Shiel or Tyson?
Both solid last few weeks from what I remember
Much better than most of our players anyhow

Tyson. Was subbed for being a poo truck just 2 weeks ago. Was poo last week too. Has zero awareness and average skills. I can see exactly why we targeted him really. :lol
-
Melbourne could have got Josh Kelly at pick 2 if they hadn't traded for it for Tyson. Kelly is/will be a superior footballer IMO.
-
Josh Kelly?
True but they got Salem as well or did you forget that
Tigs Tyson can play don't worry about that. Much better than at least 6 of our starting 22 at this minute and his only young
-

They could have had both Kelly and Salem.
As for Tyson - we were never in the hunt. Our earliest pick was 12 compared to Melbourne's pick 2. GWS wanted Kelly and only getting Melbourne's pick 2 could deliver them him.
-
Your right we had no chance and to be honest we would have found a way to screw it up
By the way, they could not have got Salem as well.
He was an upgraded pick for them so they basically got Salem and Dyson for Kelly

Have to LOL @ Melbourne trading pick 2 yet again

Nothing wrong with that trade IMO

Yes but we missed our opportunity to trade for him as he wanted to leave gws.
We can trade for him at years end I believe but, we have less currency now than last year imo and could have been a shrewd pickup given there was heaps of talk about tyson and Adams trade. Shiels couldve been the one that got away.
Bookmark him going to cats, hawks or pies lol :shh

If we finish lower than last year, why would we have less currency now?

Think he is saying in terms of a club where a player would want to move to

Well if Tyson went to the Melbourne of last year, other players ill find our side an upgrade.

Read the post properly.
GWS upgraded pick 9 to pick 2 (upgraded 1st round pick)
And pick 20 (a second rounder)
The higher picks aren't of value and could have easily been matched. We could have given gone hard and traded for what GWS wanted. Not rocket science we sat on our hands. We have currency but chose to keep the players we over rate.

I read the post. You didn't read mine.
Now understand this - GWS ONLY TRADED TYSON BECAUSE THEY WANTED PICK 2. They didn't care about pick 9 etc. They wanted to have both picks 1&2. They would never have traded him for pick 12 and if you think they would have you are deluded.

Sorry just got home before, having a petturd moment :shh
I meant to say our players such as Foley, grigg, shedwards have less currency now than last year when we made finals and looked good. Now theyve been exposed.
You see, if were cooking suasages we need to offer sizzle.
Collingwood can get rid of their spuds by cooking up a bbq and trading for good players, we need to cook that stuffing bbq and make our spuds sizzle then offload them. No point trying to delust or trade once tge gas has gone out and the snags are cold right? Last year would have been a good opportunity off tge back off a good season.

Offer something of value mate, in this case we would have been outbid with melbournes no1 pick. But need to offer value to trade. Say perhaps dusty and our first pick for their first pick and tyson. Or take tyson and adams for said player and our first pick.

Richmond is desperate to add midfield depth to its list and has also made inquiries about Melbourne midfielder Dom Tyson.
The Demons on-baller was hobbled by knee injuries this season but is contracted for two more seasons.
The Tigers attempted to recruit Tyson two years ago when he left Greater Western Sydney.

I was told the word coming from his family is he still wants to play for Richmond. Going to the Dees was a stepping stone to come back and live in Melbourne.
Now this could be complete rubbish. I thought he's contracted until next year but the person who gave me the info mentioned Tyson is coming out of contract this year which would make it more plausible to leave. If he's still contracted, I can't see him leaving unless the Dees want to let him go.
