No, that was never a suggestion.

Based on the Nab cup I reckon we could be in real trouble if Carlton get the jump on us

Would be happy with an honorable loss

If history is anything to go by, the NAB cup/challenge results mean absolutely nothing.

Gee how negative are they, they believe that carlton are going to lose the opening match against the Tigers.
The people there seem happy that the Tigers may have injuries. Scared I reckon!

Richmond’s tough inside midfield recruit Jacob Townsend appears likely to make his senior league debut with the Tigers in the 2016 season-opener against Carlton on March 24, while the Club’s first pick in last year’s National Draft, silky-skilled, speedy, small forward Daniel Rioli, is a 50-50 chance.
That’s the assessment of Richmond coach Damien Hardwick following the Tigers’ loss to Port Adelaide in their final NAB Challenge match of the pre-season late last week.
Townsend, who arrived at Tigerland via a trade with Greater Western Sydney (where he’d played 28 games in four seasons) late last year, suffered concussion when knocked out during the clash with Port, but is expected to be ready to go for Round 1.
“He’s got a bit of a rock head, Jacob,” Hardwick said.
“I think every game he’s come off with the blood rule, which is why we like him, and why we brought him to our footy club.
“He’s got two weeks to recover, so I’m sure he’ll be fine.
“I think his third quarter (against the Power) probably shows you what he can do.
“He was probably a little bit quiet prior to that . . . but his tackle pressure and general contested work around the contest, we’re pretty happy with.”
While Hardwick also is pleased with Rioli’s progress, the talented teenager’s prospects for senior selection in the opening round aren’t quite as clear-cut.
“He’s probably touch and go,” Hardwick said.
“Sam Lloyd’s a player that we like in that (small forward) position also.
“A lot of it depends on personnel available . . .
“He (Rioli) has got some upside, there’s no doubt about that.
“If he was probably a little bit cleaner tonight (v Port last Thursday night), he walks away with a couple of goals.
“But he’s 18 years of age, coming from a fair way back . . .
“He played some good footy last year, and has played some reasonable footy for us thus far.
“I reckon, at this stage, he’s 50-50 (for Round 1 selection).”

“I think every game he’s come off with the blood rule, which is why we like him, and why we brought him to our footy club.
“He’s got two weeks to recover, so I’m sure he’ll be fine"
Yet he tries to call matches off because of the same thing.
Don't rubbish us man.

Who needs Rioli when we've got....Sam Lloyd.....
-
We need Reg Varney…. :shh

Its a long shot but i would not totally discount them. What do you want to bet, within reason of course. Also seeing as they are so crap how many points in are you going to give me?
-
Rioli has done enough and should play.

Daisy Thomas has been rubbed out for round 1 by the MRP.

What your AFL club can look forward to in Round 1
Jon Anderson and Sam Edmund
Herald Sun

Richmond
A CLUB which hasn’t won a final in 14 years and is desperate to be counted among the big boys, hasn’t exactly drowned its supporters in positivity.
Aside from a resounding win over an opposition looking more like Box Hill than Hawthorn, there’s been injuries, 15-man controversies and two thumping defeats.
Among all that stands Jacob Townsend. The former GWS on-baller is tough, niggly and combative — everything the Richmond midfield needs. Seven tackles against Fremantle and 10 against the Hawks, he is the grunt to Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin’s polish.

From the Age ...
The Tigers hope for a crowd of more than 70,000.
More than 83,000 filled the MCG in round one last year but, with the Blues expected to sit near the foot of the ladder, that shapes as a tough challenge to replicate.
It is understood the Tigers are considering a march to the MCG for fans as part of the pre-game festivities.
The Blues have not won the opening match between the clubs since 2012, including a two-goal loss in round two of 2014, when the MCG was unavailable for the Thursday-night clash. But their competitive performance against Sydney in the final NAB Challenge clash has given hope of a strong first-round showing.
The Blues are likely to have about five fresh faces, led by No.1 draftee Jacob Weitering, who impressed through the pre-season competition.
Former Crow Sam Kerridge is also a certain starter, while another draftee, Charlie Curnow, is firmly in the mix. Jed Lamb, the former Giant, is also a chance.

I reckon Cyril 2.0 should play.
He looked dangerous against Port and I reckon the space of the G will suit him. Not like we have a plethora of speedy forwards in front of him.
Let the boy play!

I think Butler should be given a chance in front of him. Just as quick and more developed.

That was the biggest thing for mine in the NAB challenge. Apart from Jacks first quarter against the Hawks, no other player really seemed interested, or keen to announce to the football world 'I'm ready to step up again this season'.

Agree.....can play in the midfield as well.....would still play either of them ahead of Lloyd.....

Check out this Blues fan ...
Bit of both.
We've got the midfield depth and fitness to run over the top of them, I just hope that we trust in that at the selection table instead of seeking structural selections (outside of defence).
I'm hoping that Armfield comes up so we don't have to roll the dice with Lamb's form. We'd also have enough run to carry Phillips if we really think he can make an impact; I don't see it myself.
Any team using White in defence or midfield while Rowe is in the side (as he probably should be given Maric, Hampson, Griffiths and Vickery will be in the selection frame for Richmond) is another no-no.
We have the midfield under control, they have an advantage in terms of the ruck, but aside from Riewoldt and Rance, everything else is somewhat even. A good team defence will blanket Jack because he's not athletically blessed and we have a couple of good direct match ups for him in Weitering and Jamison.
Negating Rance comes down to how we utilise our talls in our entries (i.e. less pack situations, more switches) and forward pressure if they take possession at ground level.
Richmond are excellent at their spread and have some good tall talent, particularly in defence, but they really do lack a killer blow beyond Jack and Cotchin.

Jamison plays well on jack, Should show Chaplin the tapes
Perhaps yarren, deledio, rioli will get on on the killer blow aspect. 100 point win would hit the spot

Down to 22.

Interested in people's thoughts on the 22 we will name for Thursday and how it will differ from the EF side. From what I can tell...
Out from EF side: Conca, Newman, Grigg
Questionable: Hunt, Griffiths, Lambert, Batchelor, Chaplin, Edwards (injury)
Potential ins: Townsend, Rioli, Castagna, Astbury, Broad, Menadue, C Ellis, Lloyd, Lennon, Morris
How do people think we will line up? FWIW I think it will be...
Out: Conca, Newman, Grigg, Hunt
In: Townsend, Menadue, Lennon, C Ellis
Wouldn't be surprised to see Griffths dropped, Astbury in and Chaplin moved forward either.

How good is the situation when one honestly cannot say one is sure of winning this one?

Im sure

The pessimist in me is tipping a rueful game, where one and all leave scratching their heads and needing to immediately head to 'the royal' in order to take their minds off it. Something pisspoor like 64 - 46, we get the points...

Think we will win
But the margin wont be acceptable to many

Obviously Lids won't play and Maric is doubtful ( hasn't trained either)
Tiges by 5 goals only

Trouble is we are playing a completely different team with a different game plan and different players. Their side and conditions have changed way more than ours and I hope we are not found to be napping.

I think it'll be a contest until the 3rd quarter then we'll flog them. 10 goal + win. Expect jack or vickery to have a big game. Martin to have a big game. Houli off half back

If we aspire to be a top 4 team anything less than a 12 goal win will be unsatisfactory.
Anything over 100 points will confirm our status a legitimate contender for one of those top four positions.

Herald-Sun's Barometer Round 1
March 21, 2016
RICHMOND
ROUND 1 FORECAST:
Shane Edwards looks set to run out in Thursday’s season-opener against Carlton after getting through training on Sunday.
The Tigers say Brett Deledio is fine however his appearance at training wasn’t as convincing.
Jacob Townsend has recovered from concussion suffered in the final NAB Challenge game and is a strong chance to make his Tigers debut as a midfield battering ram.
Daniel Rioli has firmed for a Round 1 debut after training on Sunday but Nathan Broad, Jason Castagna and Adam Marcon are long shots.
The Tigers have another vacancy after Reece Conca was placed on the long-term injury list, with Mabior Chol a possible bolter after he trained with the main group.

Marcon definitely a "long shot" as he's still on the rookie list.....as is the "bolter" Chol. Thorough research and quality analysis from the HUN as usual....

After last seasons elim final when they picked Reece and Griff I would not at all be suprised if someone like a chol or rioli were picked

Match preview: Richmond v Carlton
AFL.com.au
March 22, 2016
SUMMARY
It will be 194 days since last year's elimination final loss when the Tigers run out on Thursday night and start their quest for redemption. The now traditional season opener is a match they are expected to win and win well, but coach Damien Hardwick has faced his challenges in the past fortnight. Chris Yarran (foot) and Reece Conca (hamstring) have each suffered long-term setbacks, while Brett Deledio (quadricep) will miss one week. There is enough depth at Richmond to account for Carlton, but can the players make a statement and win well? The Blues have a new coach in Brendon Bolton and look a lot more organised and "united" under the former Hawks assistant. Up to six new Blues could be unveiled on Thursday night, with 2016 all about the future.
WHERE AND WHEN: MCG, Thursday, March 24, 7.20pm AEDT
LAST FIVE TIMES
R15, 2015, Richmond 10.11 (71) d Carlton 5.11 (41) at the MCG
R1, 2015, Richmond 15.15 (105) d Carlton 11.12 (78) at the MCG
R2, 2014, Richmond 14.14 (98) d Carlton 12.14 (86) at the MCG
1EF, 2013, Carlton 18.8 (116) d Richmond 14.12 (96) at the MCG
R21, 2013, Carlton 16.10 (106) d Richmond 14.12 (96) at the MCG
THE SIX POINTS
1. Jack Riewoldt was the big difference for the Tigers in their two wins over the Blues in 2015. He was the leading goalkicker in both clashes, kicking four goals in round one and three in round 15, but he didn't receive a single Brownlow Medal vote.
2. Richmond had a much better spread of goalkickers last season, with four players kicking more than 20 goals. In contrast, Carlton had only two players hitting that mark. The Tigers averaged 87 points a game compared to the Blues' 69.
3. Richmond has now won the past three clashes between the sides after Carlton had won 10 of the previous 11.
4. No team took the ball inside 50 less in 2015 than Carlton, which averaged only 44 entries a game. Richmond ranked 10th with 50 inside 50s a game.
5. Neither was a strong tackling team in 2015, ranking as the bottom two in the AFL. Richmond placed 17th with an average of 58 tackles a game, with Carlton in last place with 57 tackles a game.
6. Richmond will be missing Bret Deledio, its No.1 ranked player in the Schick AFL Player Ratings. Deledio has climbed from No.7 at the Tigers halfway through last season to No.1 at the club and No.23 in the AFL.
IT'S A BIG WEEK FOR …
Jacob Weitering: The No.1 pick will make his debut after a pre-season that underlined why he was snapped up by the Blues' last year. Now the favourite to win the NAB AFL Rising Star Award, Weitering will be the main attraction for Carlton supporters. He'll be vital for his team too against in-form goalkicker Jack Riewoldt and the Tigers' tall forward line.
PREDICTION: Richmond by 42 points

AFL betting: Punters back Carlton to beat Richmond in season-opener
Herald Sun
March 22, 2016
CARLTON is the big mover in Round 1 betting markets with punters flocking to the Blues to upset Richmond at the MCG on Thursday.
The Blues shortened to $4.15 after bets of $5000 [Blues-Collingwood double] and $3000 following news of key Tiger outs for the season-opener.
Brett Deledio has already been ruled out with tightness in his quad while ruckman Ivan Maric remains doubtful battling a back issue.
Small forward Shane Edwards is expected to play despite hurting his shoulder/collarbone in the Tigers final NAB Challenge match.
“All of the early money was with the Tigers but even since their injury concerns its been one way traffic for Carlton,” TAB spokesman Shaun Anderson said.
“We don’t think the price will change too much more but punters certainly think there is still value in the Blues.”

AFL 2016 Round 1 Preview- Carlton vs Richmond
Foxsports
March 22, 2016
Date: Thursday 24th March 2016
Venue: MCG, 7.20pm
Pre-Season overviews:
Carlton With a new coach and a raft of different players coming into the club, the Blues have shown over the pre-season that there are a lot of talented youngsters to work with. Brendan Bolton has given his young list a chance to impress in the NAB challenge, although with differing results. The Blues will take a while to adapt to a new coach, playing style and revamped playing list.
Richmond: The Tigers have had an interesting pre-season period as they look to atone for their elimination final loss last season to North Melbourne. It all started with the controversial Dustin Martin restaurant incident and when that blew over, Chris Yarran became the centre of attention with his highly documented fitness and attitude concerns. They have had some injuries at the latter stage of the NAB challenge, which will cause apprehension, however the Tigers will remain confident these factors won’t hinder their performance against the Blues on Thursday night.
Possible Round 1 teams:
Carlton
B: Dylan Buckley Michael Jamison Zach Tuohy
HB: Kade Simpson Sam Rowe Jacob Weitering
C: Blaine Boekhorst Marc Murphy© Sam Docherty
HF: Matthew Wright Liam Jones Nick Graham
F: Sam Kerridge Levi Casboult Andrejs Everitt
R: Matthew Kreuzer Bryce Gibbs Patrick Cripps
I/C: Jed Lamb, Charlie Curnow, Ed Curnow, Simon White
EMG: Clem Smith, Jason Tutt, Andrew Phillips
The Blues are set to roll out a vastly different side opposed to Round 1 of last season. They could play as many as seven new players for this game depending on weather conditions. Jacob Weitering, the number one draft pick is set for a debut and should slot straight into the backline with ease. Another first round draft pick, Charlie Curnow, is a big chance of making his debut. Sam Kerridge and Matthew Wright have both impressed at their new clubs and have earned the nod, whilst Jed Lamb is a chance for a debut since crossing from GWS.
Bolton has a relatively fit and healthy list too choose from, with only two first choice players, Dale Thomas (suspension) and Dennis Armfield(knee) unavailable through injury and suspension. Both these players should be back by Round 2, meaning a lot of fringe players need to impress against the Tigers.
Richmond
B: Taylor Hunt Alex Rance Bachar Houli
HB: Nick Vlaustin Troy Chaplin Dylan Grimes
C: Brandon Ellis Anthony Miles Kamdyn McIntosh
HF: Dustin Martin Ty Vickery Sam Lloyd
F: Ben Lennon Jack Riewoldt Shane Edwards
R: Shaun Hampson Trent Cotchin© Corey Ellis
I/C: Jacob Townsend, Kane Lambert, Connor Menadue, Ben Griffiths
EMG: Daniel Rioli, Andrew Moore, David Astbury
Richmond are set to unleash former GWS hard nut Jacob Townsend, who seems to have won the inside midfielder role from Andrew Moore. With a few key injuries, Richmond have included some talented youngsters to compliment it’s experienced players. Depending on weather conditions on Thursday night, don’t be surprised if the slippery and speedy Daniel Rioli gets a late call-up, possibly for Ben Griffiths or Troy Chaplin, who may not fit into the structure of the side for the night.
The Tigers will be without two very important players, star playmaker Brett Deledio(thigh) and the combative ruckman Ivan Maric(back soreness). Richmond will give Shaun Grigg every chance of playing but it seems unlikely as he recovers from a broken thumb, and Reece Conca(hamstring) and new recruit Chris Yarran(foot) are set for lengthy stints on the sidelines.
Key Match Up’s
Ed Curnow vs. Dustin Martin
In recent times, Dennis Armfield has done an admirable job stopping the star midfielder from Richmond, however with Armfield unlikely to feature on Thursday night, Bolton may turn to Ed Curnow to try and curb Dusty. Curnow needs to shut down Martin’s long kicking and try and limit his possessions in the attacking half of the ground.
Alex Rance vs Levi Casboult
Rance will most likely start on Casboult on Thursday night, and this may shape Carlton’s ability to score a winnable amount of goals. Playing on the competitions best defender is no easy task, and with a relative lack of support, Casboult must stand up and keep Rance in check.
Jacob Townsend vs Marc Murphy
The hard nut Townsend will leave no stone unturned in trying to disrupt the Blues skipper on Thursday night. Townsend will not play a traditional role but will most likely play close to the playmaker in a bid to stop his creative run and perhaps test his shoulder out. With Murphy’s lack of preparation coming into the season, it is integral he finds a way to fight his way through what looks like a tricky night.
Who will win & why?
Although Richmond have lost some key players for Thursday night’s clash, the Tigers should still comfortably win this clash. Richmond seems to have considerably improved its depth through the trade and free agency period, meaning it now has the ability to cover injuries to key players. The Blues will take it’s time finding it’s feet under a new coach and with the amount of fresh faces, may not have the cohesion as a team to pose a significant threat to the Tigers. Richmond has one of the stingiest defences in the competition, whilst Carlton is still two or three forwards short and will struggle to score enough goals to topple the Tigers. The Blues are raw and may find the occasion will get the better of them.
Prediction: Richmond by 29 points

RICHMOND
Shaun Hampson will be given the No.1 ruck role against his former club on Thursday night as a replacement for Ivan Maric, who is struggling with back soreness.
There are plenty of opportunities for fringe Tigers to impress, with Brett Deledio (quad), Chris Yarran (foot) and Reece Conca (hamstring) all sidelined and Shane Edwards (shoulder) and Shaun Grigg (thumb) needing to jump final hurdles.
With half-back the biggest vulnerability, elevated rookie Jason Castagna is a strong chance to debut.
There is intrigue over the rest of the backline and Troy Chaplin's place with David Astbury a certainty to play.
Wingman Connor Menadue has also been impressive this summer and should earn a place in the 22.
Draftee Daniel Rioli is a slim chance.

KB's Take: Richmond to win by record margin over Carlton
Kevin Bartlett
SEN
23 Mar 2016]
I'm broadcasting today from Ikon Park, the home of Carlton, for I'm a man of my word.
I challenged blues fans to buy 100 memberships on Hungry for Sport two weeks ago on Blues Membership Day never thinking such apathetic supporters would respond.
The bet was I would shout a BBQ to members if the disillusioned and lethargic Carlton supporters could rally enough effort to pick up the phone and purchase a ticket.
The Blues' membership department sold 500 after a record buying spree - so they say.
Knowing Carlton as the biggest cheats I suspect they have fudged the figures yet again so as to take advantage of my Richmond generosity.
So I will graciously supply the meat and goodwill to Carlton members as they watch their team train.
That's where the generosity ends for come tomorrow night the Tigers, as long as we don't rest players will bury the blues by 191 points - the biggest winning margin in AFL history.
It's Tiger time.

Richmond’s stage fright gives Blues a chance: Jon Ralph
Justin Talent
SEN
23 Mar 2016, 03:17PM
Richmond’s tendency to fall short on the big stage gives the Blues a small shot at an extraordinary upset in their season opening match, says Jon Ralph.
The football writer for the Herald Sun believes that while the injury-depleted Tigers should easily get home against the highly inexperienced Blues, Richmond’s three successive elimination final exits show a sign of weakness in high pressure games that Carlton can take advantage of.
“On paper Carlton have no chance. On paper Richmond is home,” Ralph said on SEN’s Hungry for Sport.
“(The Blues have) 15 players out of the side that won the wooden spoon. Richmond’s probably got the best bookends in the league in (Alex) Rance and (Jack) Riewoldt and they have got enough depth to cover for (Ivan) Maric and (Shaun) Grigg and (Reece) Conca and (Brett) Deledio.
“And yet Carlton were so terrible in 2013. They didn’t even qualify for the finals... then what happened? Richmond got stage fright from nearly 30 points up. Richmond are their own enemy here.
“Is it possible that it might happen again? We’ve seen it happen in three consecutive elimination finals. Imagine what would happen on Friday morning if Richmond were to drop this game.”
Ralph also touched on the form of Richmond backup ruckman Shaun Hampson, who will be playing against his former club due to Maric’s injury.
Tigers coach Damien Hardwick was full of praise for Hampson, saying he won over half the ruck contests in Richmond’s final pre-season game against Port Adelaide.
“You know what, he’s had an injury interrupted pre-season,” said Ralph.
“He won four hit-outs to advantage for the entire game from 52 ruck contests.”
The Herald Sun journalist believes it is crucial that Richmond’s midfielders finds form against the Blues.
“You have a Richmond midfield that is severely under pressure. Now if Trent Cotchin can throw off the summer blues or if Dustin Martin can turn it on like I think he can, of course Richmond can get home,” he said.
“But it’s not about personnel, it’s about the mental game and Richmond haven’t shown themselves in the last three finals at least to be equipped to deal with these issues.”
Kevin Bartlett rubbished Ralph’s claims, saying it was impossible for the Blues to win the game.
“It’s impossible for Richmond to lose this game,” he said.
“It would be like Melbourne Tigers from the SEABL beating the Golden State Warriors.”

Richmond v Carlton: All you need to know before the AFL season opener
Rohan Connolly
The Age
March 24, 2016
After a long off-season, the wait is finally over. On Thursday night, at a packed MCG, Richmond and Carlton play the first of 207 AFL games we'll be watching over the next six months.
It's a football marathon, not a sprint, but with the hype-o-meter threatening to burst, here are five key questions about the season opener.
Who's had the better preparation?
Richmond had two NAB Challenge losses against Fremantle and Port Adelaide, interspersed with a big win over a depleted Hawthorn line-up. Carlton lost all three of their games, to Hawthorn, Essendon and Sydney.
But you'd still have to say the Blues have emerged from the pre-season in better shape. In their first hitout against the Hawks and particularly in the last game against Sydney, Carlton showed a lot more toughness and resilience than we saw last season.
Patrick Cripps was a bull around the stoppages and looks set to continue his rise. There were very encouraging signs from Adelaide pick-up Sam Kerridge, and youngsters Nick Graham and Dylan Buckley seem ready to go up a cog or two this year.
The pre-season took some toll on the Tigers. Brett Deledio is the most costly absentee with a quad injury, new recruit Chris Yarran won't be seen for six weeks at a minimum with a foot injury, and Reece Conca even longer.
How will Carlton look different under Brendon Bolton?
While many debate how many games the Blues can win under their novice senior coach, one thing they can bank on at least is seeing their team play a more daring and attacking brand of football.
Bolton will draw heavily upon the Hawthorn mantra, which means while there will be plenty of emphasis on contests and hardness, defence is also more likely to be used as a springboard to attack.
In the influx of talent from other AFL clubs have come more than a handful of flexible types who can either take a turn through midfield or assume other roles forward or back.
That should see more Carlton midfielders getting among the goals, something on which there will also be more emphasis, with key-position types such as Levi Casboult and Matthew Kreuzer (when not rucking) in desperate need of a chop-out.
Can Richmond go from a good to great team?
After three successive stuff exits from September, opinion seems divided on whether the Tigers' learning curve can go any further.
Last year saw a more consistent Richmond, and under Damien Hardwick the Tigers have developed a pretty solid formula. The query remains, is it quite classy enough?
There's no doubt about the top end. Deledio will be missed on Thursday night, but Dustin Martin, skipper Trent Cotchin, key defender Alex Rance and spearhead Jack Riewoldt have consistently put the runs on the board these past few years.
Do they have enough support? Brandon Ellis is capable of reaching their level, but to match it with the top dogs when it matters most Richmond are probably going to require the already handy Anthony Miles, Nick Vlastuin and Dylan Grimes to go up another gear.
Is the hype about Jacob Weitering justified?
A premiership season is another level altogether from some scratch games, but the No.1 draft pick is yet to put a foot wrong.
He was the shining light for Carlton in the Blues' NAB Challenge loss to Essendon and impressive again against Sydney, at times playing loose in defence, on other occasions taking on the might of Lance Franklin and acquitting himself well.
Tall and athletic, the 18-year-old defender shows remarkable composure and an uncanny ability to read the play and intercept attacks.
Thursday night's spotlight and a huge crowd will bring a whole new set of pressures, but this guy already looks a great pick-up for the Blues.
Will Tigers fans microwave their memberships if they lose?
Surely the days of manure dumped on the Punt Road doorstep are long gone, and as painful as a round-one loss to an arch enemy might seem, you'd like to think Richmond fans have developed a more realistic streak.
The Tigers will cop the usual rounds of the kitchen if they go under to a side some have tipped to take out the wooden spoon.
But round one has a habit of throwing up some unusual results. Only a brave soul indeed would wager Carlton will finish this season higher on the ladder than Richmond.

A lot about tonight will revolve around attitude and in what state we turn up above the shoulders. The media have tried to up the ante with all their "Tiges under pressure" nonsense and pumping up Carlton's side in recent days, such as Watson this morning saying if we lose tonight then it's season over for Richmond ::). Having said that, last year, we didn't turn up to this game until halfway through the 2nd quarter. It's these 'lapses' where we play sub-AFL standard footy that have held us back in recent years. That's where I want to see improvement this year. Eliminating these out of the blue quarter-long sleeps and lazily disrespecting and playing down to the level of our opponents when we play bottom sides :banghead.

But it is true. Recent history has proved it none more so than the elimination final loss to the 9th finishing cheats. We can't shy away from this fact. The pressure is on no doubt about it and if you don't feel pressure IMHO you've got your head in the sand.
It's not such a big deal to be under pressure though. It's how these boys grow up to be men. It's how our leaders respond and it's how our captain leads by example.
There's no doubt we need to win this game comfortably, if not then heads should start rolling.

-
Well all I can say is the more things change the more they stay the same. The Blues look like a well oiled machine and we look like a limp lettuce in comparison. Skills are nothing short of abysmal and we are flat footed and consistently second to the ball. After all the hype of Cotch making amends for his EF performance he is actually worse. Dusty looks slow and seems to have no clue what his role is. The forward line when it does get inside 50 is letting it out far too easy. The longer the Blues are kept in this game by our inept play the more chance we are of having a monumental loss tonight.
-
Cotchin kick 2. Turnover
-
Miles 0 possessions. Think we selected another injured player folks
-
This is bloody embarrassing....and unacceptable.
-
Hampson another hitout to (cartons) advantage
-
Miles 0 possessions. Think we selected another injured player folks
rubbish he's had 7 possessions
-
Cotchin kick 3 - turnover
-
Hampson another hitout to (cartons) advantage
I seen him tap a beauty right down Kreuzers throat.

They said 0 on ch7
-
Carlton loose EVERYWHERE

We are rotten

He looks off tonight
-
U blokes R just kidding urselves. :snidegrin
-
Why is b ellis getting a game.
-
Oh Yeh...There's nobody else.
-
Ugly
-
I tell you what, menadue could teach the rest of them about determination and polish
-
Houli stuffn useless
-
20% less disposals than Carlron and 41% kicking efficiency into F50
-
Lucky to be ahead. Been soft and lazy imo.
-
Splutter splutter.....we are a 6 cylinder motor running on one spark plug. If Hardwick doesnt give them the spray of all sprays at HT then he never will. So many passengers in that half with some inept play even I havent seen us do before.
Not sure whether our defenders have bad eyesight but kicks out of 50 seem to pinpoint blues players. What the hell are they doing, cant remember in that half where running the ball out of the defensive zone we actually strung together more than 3 posessions before a turnover. Its like watching a junior game seeing such poor skill level for a supposed top 8 side.
I know its only round 1 but honestly if we were playing a top 8 side from last year we would be down by 10 goals.
-
Too many passengers:
C Ellis
B Ellis
Houli
Hampson
Miles (surprisingly)
Griffiths

Cotchin untouchable? He's game is bloody awful? Not a captains behindhole tonight. He should be ashamed of himself. Disgusting!
-
Grimes worked hard in the first Quarter but jeez.
-
I think before they come out after HT they need to do some serious face slapping to wake each other up. Its like instead of sports drinks they all had a cup of Milo and are ready for bed. So much lethargy so early in a game. Either we are saving energy with the reduced interchanges or we will simply run out of puff and the Blues will over run us in the last with superior fitness.
-
LMFAO. Same old same old. The better side is losing. If they had a fwd line we would be in all sorts of strife.
Too many passengers:
C Ellis
B Ellis
Houli
Hampson
Miles (surprisingly)
Griffiths
Morris
Grimes
Lloyd
Miles aside whats new. Couple of other bigger names you can add to that list.
-
I missed the melt downs, thank goodness footy is back
-
Ellis kick over 30m = straight to Carlton. 3 times in a row
-
We are in big big trouble peoples
-
Good play Griff
-
What's that big sissy girl griffiths done tonight lads. Wasn't he one of the few that was training the house down along with Morris and Conca
-
B Ellis just has zero interest in going back with the flight of the ball
Can't teach that and he'll never have it
-
So many free disposals. Too easy Carlton.
-
Dimmers defence.
-
Cotch leading by example
-
All over folks.
Hahahaha
-
Menadue could be real deal .. At least he has courage
-
Asbury takes his eyes off the ball in contests. I'm not a fan of his ATM.
-
Cotch leading by example
Oh but he's played OK in 1/3 elimination final....
-
Asbury takes his eyes off the ball in contests. I'm not a fan of his ATM.
not a fan of his full stop

A shining light
-
This was a surprising team selection and it's showing. And Weitering will be a gun.
-
Which one of these useless idiots is going to stand up for us.
-
Which one of these useless idiots is going to stand up for us.
Not captain. Is either permanently injured or just poo
-
Been plenty worse than Astbury
It's a real blight when the names Menadue Ellis (C not B) and Rioli are 3 of the kids trying to stand up
Where are the rest
-
Thought i would never say this but I hope we lose this game. We have been so deplorable i am really interested to hear the coaches spin on this one.
-
Which one of these useless idiots is going to stand up for us.
If our captain stops worrying about his hair style and pulls his bloody finger out of his arse I'd drop him to the vfl next week. Bloody hopeless game with little to no impact whatsoever.

Houli
Hampson
Miles (surprisingly)
Griffiths
Morris
Grimes
Lloyd

and McIntosh

Have they out thought us. Our kicks to space are almost non existent at stages. Hand balls out of packs are not getting to free men. Are they just pressuring us in the right way to break our system.

Still no Cotchin in your list? Are you watching the game?
-
By the by who else has noticed the umpiring is pretty ordinary.
-
Cotchin anyone?
-
Absolutely pitiful
-
Oh Geez griffs
-
Oh please dont be negative blah blah blah....
Get stuffed, sitting here like a dh watching this poorly coached and performing team

-
Wow best play I have ever seen from Lloyd.
-
In front now, time to take it easy now let the blues back into it
-
Lambert has been our best!
-
Lloyd has really stood up.
-
Wow deliberate has been tough tonight. A bit too tough.
-
Convincing football
-
Get another stuffen goal tiges
-
Titch has had a good game from what I saw
-
How did we squeak out of that one. By the hair of our Chinny chin chins.
-
A few little cameos get us over the line, disgraceful effort
-
Feels like a loss but positives if there are any was Lambert and the fact we only had about 6 contributors for four quarters and still fell over the line.
-
Also wanted to add that the Blues have a gameplan and executed and sorry but I cant see that we execute anything or have any significant idea what the hell we are actually doing.
Also love to hear from anyone who can explain at the centre bounces why we didnt go man in man when we hit the front?
-
A few little cameos get us over the line, disgraceful effort
Basically this

Thought i would never say this but I hope we lose this game. We have been so deplorable i am really interested to hear the coaches spin on this one.
You must be disappointed
-
Thought i would never say this but I hope we lose this game. We have been so deplorable i am really interested to hear the coaches spin on this one.
You must be disappointed
You must be elated we have rebuilt over 7 years to win by 9 pts over the wooden spooners
-
Similar to the GWS game last year.
Club playing comfortable football - on and off the field.
I'm very interested in Dimmas presser, after that massive bake post the final and 6 months to let that loss burn in our gut, tonight gave me no confidence that loss matteted
-
A win is four points. The team was underdone. Carlton's pressure was first class. Dunno how we managed to win the tackles.
-

Not at all, was a disgraceful effort from the majority
But I still want to win. Someone saying they want the team to lose seems absurd to me
-
3 players under 10 games. 7 or 8 under 50. lots of improvement to come.
Upside: c Ellis and menadue looking like players. Every time kamdyn breaks the lines we score. Need more of that.
-

Sounds like a classy excuse.
CARRY ON TO 8TH.
-
Carltank getting praised for their young team, the irony is that we were 12 months younger on average ... ;D
-
corey ellis is silky as silk
menadue goes good
-
Worst Richmond team selected since the Melbourne debacle last year.
We looked gone - not once but at least 3 times.
Lambert was fantastic. Lloyd must play every week. He just kicks goals.
Still unconvinced Astbury is a better option than Chaplin.
Houli and Brandon Ellis were very ordinary
Cotchin looked second rate compared to Murphy .
Rioli is not ready.
Carlton is no longer the basket case they were last year.
I honestly can't believe we got out of jail . Just relieved we have four points.
-
Still unconvinced Astbury is a better option than Chaplin.
we would of lost by 5 if chaplin played
-
Frustrating win, simply because of the usual's, skill errors below every other team, game plan is highly volatile and the opposition knew it.
BUT! We won and there are many positives out of it as well.
A few mentions from posters of beating the wooden spooners.
That carlton team tonight were not a wooden spoon team, last year was last year, it's dead and buried, get past it. Carlton played much better than their entire year last year with a lot more structure etc etc.
Richmond still should have won by 10 goals no doubt about that.
I do hope the Tigers learn from tonight, but fearful that they won't.
All in all I am most certainly glad we won and loved it, especially because my kids were sitting with me who don't see what adults see, they just see a win and we got to sing the greatest footy song of all, so :gotigers :thumbsup :cheers
-
Amazing when you look at Carlton. 4 number 1 draft picks running around.
-
Was it just me or did we seem like we were running in treacle tonight? The focus has been to introduce speed into our game but everything appeared to be in slow motion, I guess fumbling three times with every possesion doesnt help.
-
they looked a lot quicker than us, can barely remember a moment where we managed to get the overlap, woeful
-
Carlton played out of their skins and would've given most sides a contest tonight, their list , a bit like Port's when Hinkley took over, is perhaps not as bad as everyone thinks - we'll see once the initial boost of a regime change wears off I guess ..but there were plenty of worrying signs for us - most of them still worryingly familiar after 6 full seasons and into our 7th , but one or two good ones as well......good to see some of the depth stand up for once ...blokes like Lambert & Lloyd -both of whom who I've never really rated (and still won't until they consistently perform).....Menadue will be a star, Rioli's tackle, C.Ellis showed glimpses of his class and will only get better........ Martin looks set to explode... ..Rance just keeps getting better ...stuff.....while there's no doubt we were fairly putrid at times and only a true imbecile would argue otherwise, it's never not good to beat Carlton....
Anyway we'll soon find out if this was the kick up the arse we needed or the shape of things to come....
-
So why didn't Richmond play out of their skins to make amends for their last of three consecutive elimination losses.
First game of a fresh season.
They can never rise to the Occassion with any reliability.
It's a joke.
-
7 year itch? stuffed if I know....

Spot on
-
Seriously, that was the worst team Richmond had put on the park for a while.
C. Ellis , Menadue and Rioli may all go on and have fine careers but at the moment it's definitely boys vs men.
Surprised we were able to win tonight.

Just looking at the stats from last nights game and we had an amazing 53 clangers. I wonder what the record is for the highest amount of clangers and still winning the game.
-
We sent a message to the rest of the competition last night. Our spot in the 8 is up for grabs if anyone wants it.
-

Excellent post
Agree with all but the bit about Lloyd, thought he was great in the last but was MIA for most of the game. Cost us a goal late too which bought the ,arginine back to less than 2 goals
-

I thought Menadue was very good. In our best 22 by a long way.
-
The Due and C Ellis were both good I thought.
-
What's that big sissy girl griffiths done tonight lads. Wasn't he one of the few that was training the house down along with Morris and Conca
Clearly you were not at the game?
I haven't watched the replay. Always like comparing what the TV shows to what you actually see at the ground
But just on Griffiths, I thought he was a our best ruckman on the night. Thought he worked really hard at stoppages. Didn't hit the scoreboard himself but was involved in at least 3 goal assists that I can remember
Our effort was extremely poor but I'll bank the 4 points
What was one of the biggest concerns to me was how slow Carlton made us look. Chasing tails constantly can do that
Thought Connor Menadue was the highlight for mine. He was excellent, his run and courage is first class. Yes made some blues but they will decrease with more exposure to this level
Concerned about Edwards, was really favouring that shoulder after taking a couple of hits to it late in the game
Will be very interested to see what they do next week at the selection table. Even is Lids, Maric (showed again last night how important he is just for leadership) and possible Grigg are still not available. Some blokes shouldn't get gigs next week
-

Can you back up your anti astbury garbage with some more articulate comments?
What exactly makes you think Chaplin would of been better
-
Yeah well I was there last night too. Carlton were very good, in fact they were better when they moved the ball. We just couldn't get our plan going if there was plan.
-
Can you back up your anti astbury garbage with some more articulate comments?
The irony in that request is .... welll staggering to say the least
Any chance you can do the same with your constant bagging of Grigg & Chaplin which has been going on for over 18 months now
-
how many words you want ?

Happy to except a bit of ole english in "nowt" but I'll be buggered if I can work out what "arginine" (a heart medicine I think) was before the autocorrect faries got to it.
:cheers

A typo methinks. I don't think he could possibly be involved in 63 goal assists.
:lol

Ouch, that didn't instill a great amount of confidence!

I think we can all agree from a Carlton perspective it was a really good time to play Richmond.
Carlton looked the better team for 75% of the match . On three separate occasions they had us by 10 points and we looked gone.
All the best highlights were Carltons . Some of their play was electrifying.
We looked scrappy at best . I could almost hear the Benny hill music playing.
But we still, somehow found a way to win .
The wheel will turn and we will get back to the football we played between rounds 7 - 22 last year.
Never forget , it's a marathon not a sprint.

Richmond Games Carlton
10 Less than 50 9
5 50 to 99 6
4 100 to 149 3
3 150 or more 4
I think this is a fair break down. They had an extra 150 game player than us and we had an extra less than 50 game player than them. The way the media was calling them inexperienced and young while ignoring us was ridiculous.

Yeah it was really "men against boys" wasn't it matty? Tell us again how Menadue, C.Ellis & Rioli made it "the worst side we could've picked".....haha stuff....
-
Menadue and Corey Ellis are easy in te best side
-
Menadue and Corey Ellis are easy in te best side
Next year they will be.
Be fantastic if they could play 15 games each this year.
But they will get squeezed out by the likes of Yarran , Grigg and Conca when things start getting serious.
-
Menadue and c Ellis are better footballers now than grigg and conca
-
They were better footballers than Conca & Grigg when they were still playing TAC Cup....
-
I'm really impressed with both - just confident, natural footballers who make good decisions and back themselves.
We need another dozen like them
-
Menadue in particular impacted the game (positively). I would have had him in my top 8 or so players.
Has to play next week and beyond
-
l'm happy with the win & even happier that so many of the younger players stood up. The Tigers are on the right track & all our supporters should give them 100% support.
:gotigers

Menadue is a gun. What a bargain pick. He is tracking as a top 10 pick from that draft. Just needs 5kg of muscle and look out!

Hopefully will be proven wrong

I agree. I thought they took it too easy and got caught napping. They almost got a rude shock with Carlton playing their best footy in years.
-
Even the coaches can seen that 4 of their mids were bettre than ours. Oh the forum experts... :snidegrin :snidegrin

Well with 3 number 1 picks in the middle playing their best footy for a while, you would expect them to be superior.
Yet we won the game....
-
I thought there mids were the worst four players on the field, even worse than Hampson
-
:facepalm :boxer
-
Rance and Lambert both made the AFL website's team of the week:
Centre Half-Back
ALEX RANCE (Richmond) – Last year's All Australian centre half-back started 2016 in similar fashion, using his smarts to read the play brilliantly against the Blues.
Interchange
KANE LAMBERT (Richmond) – Sparked the Tigers on a tough night with plenty of run, finished with seven tackles and 27 possessions in the hard-fought win.
