NAB AFL Under 18 National Championships - Victorian Squads Announced
The states most promising junior footballers have begun their preperation for the NAB AFL Under 18 National Championships later this year.
The championships play an important role in uncovering AFL players of the future and talented players from country and metropolitan Victoria can stake their claims for a place in the two teams during trial matches to be held at Victoria Park.
AFL talent scouts will be out in force to uncover the next Marc Murphy or Dale Thomas when the countrys best junior players showcase their skills at the National Championships.
Former Calder Cannons coach Robert Hyde will coach the Country team and Carlton Premiership player David Dickson is in charge of the Metro side.

It says Matt Kreuzer is injured. Anyone know what's wrong with him?
I'm still nervous about taking a ruckman with our first pick even though he's a good size 199cm and 91kg at 18 years of age.
Trent Cotchin looks a good sized ready-made midfielder at 184cm and 81kg.
-
At this stage I'm leaning more towards snaring Cotchin, or even Grimes and looking at Bellchambers or McEvoy with our 2nd round pick and most likely priority pick

Shows the importance of us getting that priority pick. No point winning some meaningless games late in the year and stuffing up our draft options and future.

Whats wrong with Kreuzer?
-
Whats wrong with Kreuzer?
Nothing, just cautious of taking ruckman with early picks.
Also considering that there are excellent ruck options in the 15-30 range, it would be smarter IMO to take a class inside mid.
-
I was referring to the claims of an injury lol.
-
Whats wrong with Kreuzer?
There was no mention of any injury to him in last weekend's TAC Cup game ???

Wow, 17 of the Vic Metro are from Calder or Northern :o
-
Keen to check out Kreuzer, Grimes, Cotchin, McEvoy and Henderson
But I though Henderson was still carrying an injury, leg I believe
-
Same here bluey. I think the squads still need to be further reduced down to a final 25. Only 3 guys from the Western Jets despite them being 7-2.
-
WA U18s final 25-man squad:
There are four players in the squad who are backing up from last year's 18s carnival, with Chris Masten, Rhys Palmer, Luke Sampey and Steven Browne adding invaluable championship experience to this year's team.
Five players in this year's squad -- Masten, Palmer (both East Fremantle), Matthew Breen (Peel) and Alex Rance and David Ellard (both Swan Districts) - have all played league football this year.
Also, five of the eight AFL AIS academy members from the latest induction (Chris Yarran, Cale Morton, Daniel Rich, Nicholas Naitanui and Tony Notte) also made the squad.
Claremont -- Simon Starling, Cale Morton, Matthew DeBoer, Patrick McGinnity
East Fremantle -- Chris Masten, Rhys Palmer, James Venturini
East Perth -- Luke Sampey, Tayte Pears, Michael Dawes
Peel -- Matthew Breen
Perth -- David Myers, Justin Russell, Cruize Garlett
Subiaco -- Jarrhan Jacky, Daniel Rich, David Gourdis
West Perth -- Steven Browne, Mat Tedesco
Swan Districts -- David Ellard, Chris Yarran, Alex Rance, Luke Pratt, Tony Notte, Nicholas Naitanui

Luke Sampey, brother of Ashley?
Ashley's surname is spelt differently - Sampi
Masten sounds as though he's No. 1 from WA at the moment.

THE NAB AFL Under-18 Championships showcase the stars of tomorrow in Australian Football, and AFL Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan runs through some of the players most likely to catch the eye of spectators and clubs alike.
He compares Cotchin to Brent Stanton

Comparing Cotchin to Stanton is interesting.
IMHO Cotchin is more of a contested ball winner than Stanton. But in space they seem to have similar games
-
Collier has been killing it for Tassie as a KP Defender this year.
Could of been at Punt Rd but instead it was Kingsley who came :banghead

I like Stanton and would happily have someone like him at Punt Rd but in terms of what we really need I would hope for a similar ballwinner but with a touch more class and hurt factor with our first pick.

Vics tipped to head draft
24 June 2007 Sunday Herald Sun
Jackie Epstein
VICTORIA will be back as a breeding ground force at this year's national draft, according to Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro.
Dodoro is tipping a big return for Victorian hopefuls, after recent domination by Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
The under-18 championships start this weekend, with matches scheduled around the country for the first time.
"The Vics have got a pretty strong side and I think it'll be a Victorian draft this year," Dodoro said.
"The numbers will be back to Victoria in terms of percentage. Maybe 70 per cent will be Vics. You still have to look everywhere, but I think we'll see more boys drafted from this state."
Victoria has enjoyed success in recent times during the championships, with Vic Metro last year defeating Vic Country in the grand final.
Dodoro said it had been hard so far to get a form line on talent.
"There aren't as many obvious standouts as previous years," he said. "This time last year we were talking about 20-odd players, so I think we need the championships to sort them out a bit.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the WA boys, in particular. It's a big ground and a big advantage for them at Subiaco."
Last year 53 players selected in the national draft - and 18 in the rookie draft - competed in the under-18 championships.
There are already big wraps on Vic Metro's 199cm ruckman/forward Matthew Kreuzer, as well as his state teammates Trent Cotchin and Jack Grimes.
Darcy Daniher, son of Anthony, is eligible to be drafted by Essendon and Sydney under the father-son rule.
"He's a key back or forward, about 6ft 3 (190cm) and he's fairly athletic with some good attributes," Dodoro said.
The Vic Country side will field two famous names with Scott Selwood - brother of Joel, Troy and Adam - and Robbie Tarrant, brother of Chris.

From the Tassie vs Qld game
Jaye Bowden had 21 possies, 5 goals
Aaron Cornelius - 14 disposals, 7 marks, 5 goals
Aaron Joseph (34 touches) and Alex Grima (19 disposals).
Kevin Sheehan said Tom Collier (192cm) also had an outstanding performance game. His aggression at the ball and his dash from defence stood out back now in his own age group.
From the NSW vs NT game
Craig Bird (34 possessions and a Sydney scholarship holder) and Loccy McGregor (30 touches and four goals) were outstanding for NSW/ACT. They continually won the centre clearances and capitalised on the impressive ruck work of Max Wilson (199cm, 18 hit-outs) and David Martin (203cm, 15 hit-outs). Medium forward Taylor Walker (an Adelaide scholarship holder) from Broken Hill continued his impressive goalkicking form for the Rams this year, booting five majors. His one-touch marking and accuracy around goal was a feature.

At this stage I would like
1) Cotchin
17) McEvoy :pray
18) Henderson :pray
-
It would be great if McEvoy was still around at pick 17 but the wraps on him seem to be pushing him up the draft order by the week. Some early phantom drafts even have him at 5 or 6 :-\. Still it's early days with 5 months to go before draft day.
-
Matt Burgan's top 10 from the Division 2 games on the weekend
1 Loccy McGregor NSW/ACT 174cm, 72kg
One of the smaller players at this year's championships, McGregor played a blinder against the Thunder, booting four goals and claiming 30 touches. Busy and tenacious, McGregor also had 11 inside 50s, a great result for the little fella.
2 Aaron Joseph Tasmania 178cm, 75kg
Very impressive, Joseph was the leading ball-winner in the match against Queensland, winning 34 disposals including 22 kicks. His work-ethic was super, emphasised by his centre clearance work, while he pumped the ball inside 50 on 10 occasions.
3 Craig Bird NSW/ACT 178cm, 75kg
He has already been listed as a Sydney scholarship holder.
4 Jay Bowden Tasmania 184cm, 74kg
A midfielder/half-forward, Bowden shone with five goals against Queensland, enhancing his status as one of Tasmania's best prospects. He also finished with 21 disposals and six inside 50s.
5 Tom Bellchambers Tasmania 199cm, 91kg
Standing at 199cm, Bellchambers was a telling figure against Queensland, clearly having the better of Scorpions' ruck duo David Hill and Jake Spencer. He won a whopping 33 disposals and was excellent in the centre hit outs. It was a most impressive display.
6 Aaron Cornelius Tasmania 191cm, 80kg
Too young to be drafted this year
7 Darin Stewart Queensland 191cm, 87kg
Stewart's performance against Tasmania could not be questioned after bagging five goals, which included an excellent goal tucked on a difficult angle in the pocket. His unusual kicking style certainly stands out and has raised some the eyebrows of recruiters.
8 Trevor Oliver Northern Territory 181cm, 88kg
One of a handful of "overage" 19 year olds Territorians
9 Patrick Fittock Northern Territory 185cm, 71kg
Like Oliver, Fittock is a 19-year-old
10 Taylor Walker NSW/ACT 188cm, 81kg
tied to Adelaide via the scholarship program

Certainly did. If we get a top 2 pick and we get either Kreuzer or Morton then its a win for us. Morton seems to be bigger than 75kgs...Id say hes around 80-81kgs at the moment. Hes going to be a great player.
-
Morton is listed as 75 kg on the WA team list.
According to Kevin Sheehan
Kreuzer (199cm, 91kg) - lost no friends. 25 hitouts, 20 possies, pushed forward for a goal. Best Vic Metro.
Grimes (187, 76)- best of the Vic mids. WA mids swamped the Vic.
Cale Morton - sensational. Marking, kicking and run was first class
Rhys Palmer (180, 76 ) - 34 possies
David Myers (190, 85 ) - rocketed up in draft position based on today.
-
Sportal Bests:
WA:
Palmer drifted forward for three goals in the third term, finishing the match with 34 disposals. Chris Yarran (two goals) and Luke Sampey (two goals) up forward.
Cale Morton lived up to his reputation with 24 disposals and a goal, while David Myers (28 possessions), Chris Masten (26) and ruckman Nicholas Naitanui (22 hit-outs)
Vic Metro:
Addam Maric (three goals), Jack Grimes (two goals, 20 touches) and Matthew Kreuzer (17 touches, 23 hit-outs)

Kevin Sheehan said that Maric's goal-kicking conversion rate over 18mths of the TAC was 85% - that's very, very impressive.
Cotchin was disappointing, but that's just one match. Don't write him off just yet. The reverse applies to Palmer.

my exact thoughts.
One bad game doesn't make a player a dud, and
one good game doesn't make someone a star
-
my main concern with cotchins game yesterday was that at no stage did he break his tag. we already have deledio who cant break a tag in AFL, cotchin struggling to break it at that level anyway its true that 1 game doesnt make or wreck a players chances. Im spewing that Natanui isnt up for grabs.
-
breaking a tag is a historical issue with Lids going back to his U18 years.
Last year and this year on a occasion it has been shown up eg vs attard or sherman.
Reckon Lids will overcome it in time, just needs more support around him and more experience

SOUTH Australia started its under-18 national championship campaign with a convincing 50-point victory against Victoria Country at AAMI Stadium last night.
Setting up the win with a strong first quarter, the Croweaters handled the greasy conditions far better than the visitors and with a 32-point lead at the first change, were always going to be difficult to chase down.
"We talked about that beforehand, that winning the first quarter had to be high on the agenda," SA coach Brenton Phillips said.
"Their eyeballs were hanging out of their heads when they ran out of these rooms so it was really good they could compose themselves, get after the footy and be strong at the contest. I think that's where we set up the match."
Victoria Country - with forward Haelen Kay leading strongly - surged during the second term to close the gap to 17 points at half-time.
But after regrouping at the main change, SA booted the first three goals of the third term to steady and take a six-goal buffer into three-quarter time.
Port Magpies pair Levi Greenwood and Brad Ebert, who have both sampled league football in the SANFL this year, showed the benefit of playing against bigger bodies by dominating for the Croweaters.
SA captain Ebert started in attack and proved to be too strong in several marking contests while Greenwood continually hit the ball hard and rebounded off half-back.
"Wasn't Greenwood good? He just straight-lined every ball he went for," Phillips said.
"I thought our efforts to tackle, harass and smother were really first-class."
Crumbing forward Matt Wright, who kicked four goals and set up one other, was a livewire in attack for SA while Hamish Hartlett - younger brother of Carlton's Adam - contributed three goals.
SA takes on arch-rival Victoria Metro - which lost its opening match to Western Australia - in its second game on Friday at Skilled Stadium, Geelong.

Summary
* Home ground advantage was probably the reason why WA and SA won comfortably respectively. It's meant to be a National championships so after the Vic sides had won the past 7 championships it was time to move them out of Victoria. A chance to see people in a different light and under different conditions as that's what will happen in the AFL.
* Kreuzer - really stood up to his high ranking. Gone up another few notches this year from last year. Worked hard, endurance and speed incredible for his size. Clean skills who can push forward.
* Cotchin - dirty day. Had a companion all day and maybe that's the first he's had in his career. Wil learn he needs to work harder to burn off his direct opponent. Still a good player as he's been watching him since U16 but it wasn't his day.
* Surprises - WA kids. A few recruiters may now push them higher up.
* Rhys Palmer - was a bit player but got 35 possies and said pick me. Took 'em on. Run, beat tackles and bounce. Could have kicked 6. Watch for him in 2nd and 3rd game. 8 senior games at East Freo.
* Carl Morton - super impressive. 6' 4" played on the wing. Speed, endurance, lace out passes. 25 possies.
* David Myers - Similar size. big ground and fast track suited him. Moved beautifully across HB. Left footer. Important player for WA.
* Alex Rance - played across HB. 194cm Key defender. Father of Murray Rance but not eligible for F/S.
* Brad Ebert - terrific. Cousin of Brett. 28 possies. Played deep forward then into the midfield. Had a big influence wherever he went. Just 17 and already SA captain. Playing senior footy for Port Magpies. Strong on both sides of the body. Good in the air. 6' 2". Early draft pick.
* Levi Greenwood - left footer, strong body played across HB.
* Dan McKenna - key forward, key back, 194cm. Fine year for Gippsland Power
* Ben McEvoy - 199cm ruckman/key forward. Had 10 marks. Good defensive marks. Early draft choice. Enormous potential.
* James Polkinghorne - quite a good player for Vic Metro. 181cm, strongly built. played onball. Solid game first up. From Strathmore.
* Adam Maric - very good 3 goals but shoulder injury. 5 goals in TAC Cup final last year. Small forward. Accuracy level is 85% at goal. Long kick as well as clever around goals.
* Darren Jackie - typical Indigenous small forward. 180cm. Light but promising. Knows where the goals are. Long kick as well as clever around goals.
* Next game - Div 2 Thurs, Div Friday at Kardinia Park.

Interesting result when you consider that last years draft only had one draftee from NSW/ACT and about 10 were drafted from Qld!

Teens start to spark their Territory
Emma Quayle | July 6, 2007 | The Age
MARLON Motlop's season has not stuck to the script.
The Darwin teenager had hoped to spend three or four weeks in Adelaide this year, preparing for the under-18 championships in games played at a faster pace than he was used to.
Motlop went there almost straight after he returned from the AIS-AFL Academy trip to South Africa. But after playing his first game for the North Adelaide under 17s, he had to turn around.
"I played one game and that was it. My back got really sore, and it turned out I had stress fractures," said Motlop, who has four cousins and a brother, Thomas, on the North Adelaide list.
"I was looking forward to it. I thought it would help me get ready for the championships, and it would have been good to play footy with my cousins down there.
"I've had to do a bit of rehab and it's been frustrating. I haven't been playing as well as I've wanted, but it's been good just to get out there."
Motlop played his second match in more than two months yesterday, kicking two goals for the Northern Territory and setting up a third for teammate Peter Rolfe midway through a very wet final quarter on a sodden Skilled Stadium.
After another teammate, Paul Campbell, soccered the ball deep into the forward line, Motlop pressed back against his opponent and poked his toe at the ball. It bobbed up into the path of Rolfe, who put a third consecutive soccer kick through the goals.
The Territory boys, well beaten by NSW/ACT in the first round of the championships, responded with a 45-point win over Tasmania. Austin Wonaeamirri and Cyril Rioli were among their best players, while potential first-round pick Tom Collier playing very well for Tasmania.
The NSW/ACT team beat Queensland by 62 points in the second match, the Queenslanders winless after their first two games and out of the running to win consecutive championships.
Alan McConnell coached Motlop through the Academy program and believes his bright mind and sharper skills will appeal at draft time.
"He's got exceptional skill. He's a one-touch player, he's got lovely balance, a good sidestep and great awareness," McConnell said.
"He was the best decision-maker in the testing we did at the AIS and that's a big plus, but one of the things Marlon probably needs to work on is his decision-making around transitions, and his ability to work both ways.
"At this stage, when the ball leaves his space he tends to stop and watch, or wait for the next possession rather than find his man when he can't influence the play. There's a bit of work to do there, but that's not unusual for boys who are at the top of the tree in junior footy. He certainly has some talent."
Motlop, a cousin of Daniel and Shannon Motlop, has new plans. He was happier yesterday than he was after his first game of the championships and knows what he wants to work on through the rest of the year.
"I want to become a really hard runner, just do all the gut-busting running and break the lines," he said. "That's probably it, and just the in-close work. I want to make sure I get my hands on the ball."
Today's second-round division one games have been switched to Princes Park to prevent Skilled Stadium becoming more of a mudpit.

Just got back from a freezing, wet and muddy Princes Park after watching Vic Metro knock off a very disappointing SA. The croweaters just couldn't handle the wet conditions especially in the first half when they could only manage one goal. A hard game to judge in terms of draftees as you rarely get these poor conditions in the AFL now so I'll put my novice thoughts down.
Vic Metro:
Potts - kicked 4 goals from the wing. It looked like he was on Greenwood.
Farmer - was the surprise packet today in a back pocket/small rebounding defender role. Totally dominated back there and got a heap of it.
Kreuzer - played ruck rover and occasionally forward for the first 3 quarters and then in the ruck in the last. For a 199cm kid he is extremely mobile as shown by the couple of smothers he had today. It wasn't a day big blokes but the Vic Metro coach and a number of watchers were raving about his game today. I still think he'll take time to develop for AFL. I still would lile to see him on a dry day to judge his foot skills.
Cotchin - Played across HB today and lived up to his high ranking. Skill level is very good. Very clean even in wet conditions when the footy to most of the others was like a cake of soap. One time he picked the ball off his toes, spun around to break a tackle and hit his teammate lace out by foot. He made one bad mistake kicking across goal straight to a SA player but that was the only thing you could criticize him on today. As for RFC needs he isn't a inside midfielder. Well at least today he wasn't used in the guts. If you were to compare him you would say he was more a Lids type although not as tall (184cm).
De Bruin - will probably be named in the bests as he was a good player for Metro and played in the middle but he has no right foot.
Polkinghorne - Was tagged today. Did okay but IMO nothing to write home about. Appears to be one of these kids who reputations precedes him going by the people watching him today.
Maric - Had 2 goals (clever snaps) to quarter time but I didn't notice him much after that.
Others in Metro's bests - Hurley at FB, Croft, Otten and Simpson.
South Australia
Tom Holmes - in the middle was probably SA's best player. Got a fair bit of it, looked a decent kick and kicked their first goal. Hard to find other SA players who stood out. Ebert has very good and clean skills but didn't do much. Mostly played in front of his opponent and on the bounce dished off handballs to teammates running past. Likewise other South Aussies who are rated like Hartlett, McNamara and Millar. As mentioned Greenwood looked to have 4 kicked on him although I'm not 100% sure he was on Potts all game.
I didn't see the WA vs Vic Country game but I asked someone who did and they said WA is a very good side. Cale Morton stood out clearly again. He must be close to one of first picked based on his U18 champs. Palmer was good again also. The WA names listed by Sportal pretty much agreed with this bloke although he liked Garlett as well. For Vic Country, this blokes best players were McKenna and Selwood.
-
Im a big fan of Morton, Rance and Myers. Hope that atleast 1 comes to tigerland.
I asked about Rance and apparently he had a very good last quarter rebounding out of defence.
The last round is on Wednesday so hopefully I'll get to see Morton and WA in the flesh against SA. On today's form WA would beat SA by 10 goals.
-
I rang a couple of people who went, i couldnt go although i wanted to. they confirmed that we shouldnt be drafting really past round 3. Because this draft seems poor we need to get the priority pick at 17. Stick to the WA Boys. I want Rance at Richmond coz i see him as a full back going forward, myers is ok as well. If we got them at 17 & 18 Id be rapt. Morton or Kreuzer is the decision at our 1st pick for mine. We need to get a ruckman in the PSD.

I would agree with that assessment Ramps. So would a Hawthorn scout I spoke to who was bored by half-time. It was wet conditions so maybe I'm being harsh but I was expecting a higher standard from the best kids in the country than what I saw today. What it says to me is we must keep our PP so we get the maximum we can out of this draft.

the quality of this year's draft certainly does drop away after about the top 25 or thereabouts. If we get a PP we will in the box seat for this year's draft :thumbsup
ATM I'm leaning more towards Kreuzer at one (mainly cos I can't see McEvoy dropping)
If Carlton and Melbourne snare picks ahead of us then I'd like Morton or Ebert
And assuming we get a PP, I'd like Henderson and Rance, get some more quality talls
Also seriously considering laying off Schulz or Meyers, bundle them up with a 3rd rd pick and try and grab another first rounder

Fearless Polkinghorne in Hawkish mood
07 July 2007 Herald Sun
Gareth Trickey
A BRIEF flirtation with volleyball has proved rewarding for Calder Cannons midfielder James Polkinghorne.
The 18-year-old son of former Hawthorn player Robert Polkinghorne and nephew of Hawks star David Polkinghorne, he has a remarkable ability to launch his 82kg frame over packs and snatch the ball out of thin air with the grace of a professional spiker.
His fearlessness around the packs has also caught the eye of national selectors at the national under-18 championships.
Polkinghorne picked up 18 possessions for Victoria Metro in last week's game against Western Australia and finished with 18 possessions yesterday against South Australia at Princes Park.
"The leaping and timing of my jump in volleyball has definitely carried across to my football game," Polkinghorne said.
"I played for three or four years with St Bernard's College and made the under-15 Victorian schoolboy side, but as football became more demanding I had to follow my passion and veer away from volleyball."
Polkinghorne missed a large chunk of last season because of osteitis pubis.
But the 181cm Strathmore teenager has returned from a rigorous pre-season to average 24 possessions this year.
Talk of playing for Hawthorn is inevitable when your father and uncle have left their mark at the club.
"Dad's been a really good influence and has tried to direct me in the right direction," Polkinghorne said.
"He tells me to just try and keep level-headed about it all and stay focused."

Running hot: Rhys Palmer in action yesterday. Picture: Norm Oorloff
Push to move TAC matches to Dome
07 July 2007 Herald Sun
Scott Gullan
NORMALLY it's who's the next Chris Judd but the main talking point at yesterday's second round of the national under-18 championships was actually the Telstra Dome.
More specifically, why can't we showcase the best young talent in the land on the perfect track indoors at the Dome?
After Wednesday's near flood in Geelong which saw yesterday's games moved to Princes Park, the recruiters were already edgy.
That soon turned to anger when, the minute Vic Metro ran on to the ground for game two, it started pouring rain.
While it's always good to see if players can handle the wet, the clubs fear they will turn up next week for the final games and get another muddy slog that won't shed any more light on the kids' abilities.
"It's ridiculous," one recruiter said. "We should be at Telstra Dome because these are the potential stars of our competition and they should be on show in the best conditions available.
"It's no good for us if we roll up here again next week and see this again."
Last night, the AFL's general manager of national and international game development, David Matthews, was seeking Telstra Dome boss Ian Collins in the hope of switching at least next Wednesday's Division One games. They will also discuss locking in one or two games at the stadium next year.
While the weather took up much of the discussion, the performance of Western Australia and potential No. 1 Matthew Kreuzer was also a talking point.
WA, which didn't win a game last year, is on track to win its first national title since 1999 after it made it two from two, easily defeating Vic Country.
The standout player was East Fremantle midfielder Rhys Palmer, who collected 36 touches and kicked one goal yesterday after bagging five from 35 possessions in Perth last week against Vic Metro. He has now gone from a late first-round draft pick to a possible top 10.
"Everyone likes a player who can play in all conditions, the mental strength to play the game for what it's worth anywhere," WA coach Gerard McNeill said.
Others to impress included Cale Morton, the brother of West Coast's Mitch, East Fremantle midfielder Chris Masten, full-back Alex Rance, the son of Footscray and West Coast player Murray, and Fijian-born ruckman Nicholas Naitanui, who is too young for this year's draft but will be hot property in 12 months time.
Kreuzer, who led Vic Metro to a comfortable victory over South Australia, showed he can do it in any conditions. Playing as a ruck-rover despite standing 199cm, he threw himself everywhere, smothering and doing all the one-percenters which gladden recruiters hearts.
His Metro teammate Trent Cotchin, who is expected to go No. 2, fought back after a quiet opening game in the championships to show his class.

It reminds me of a scene of a 16 or 17 year old whose seen a footy go over the fence at a junior game like under 12s somewhere - and instead of kicking it back decides to take it home lol... he'll go top 10 Palmer but it shows this draft aint no draft where you want to be pick past 25 or 30 or in our case 34.

Best conditions for the players or recruiters?
If you want the best it's the MCG. You'll still get your blanket and thermos wet watching from the fence.
"Everyone likes a player who can play in all conditions, the mental strength to play the game for what it's worth anywhere," WA coach Gerard McNeill said.
He should point that out to the whining soft*** recruiter. They played on a hard, dry surface last week.

you can still find some bargains late in the draft, there always are, you just need to do your homework to find good players this year.
But we are lucky (assuming we get a PP) because we have picks where the talent still is

True bluey. This year will be a real test for all club recruiters. It's probably on par with the poorer 2002 and 2003 drafts.
-
I'd liken it to 2003, nothing compares to the crapness of 2002.
Some identified gun talents at the top re Kreuzer, Cotchin, Masten, Ebert, Morton and a decent amount of depth.
-
Maybe its a draft to give VFL listed players a go - late. For us thered be nothing wrong in going with Neville at 50, Anderson at 66 and Sylvester at 82 or something like that.
-
No problem with that Ramps. You would need to take Sylvester at 66 at least. He and Neville now have a profile with Andy Collins and us pumping them up. Essendon are allegedly snooping around too.

That's okay for us if it's the same as long as we don't lose our PP. The 2003 draft stopped at pick 20 (Sam Butler) with just a handful of players making it after that. We had pick 21 and Miller went speculative with Gilmour :P yet Rainesy was at 76 :thumbsup.

Low standard. Rioli starred but not much to get excited about.

After having 10 draftees last year, Qld have certainly come crashing back to Earth in 2007 :o. NSW are blitzing Tassie on the way to the Div 2 title.

Who was most impressive in your opinion GB?
I see Kreuzer and Cotchin are not named in the Metro bests. Ruckman Simpson looked fairly good in the mud last week and he's named in the bests today. How did you see his game?
-
continued:
Cotchin very good across half-back, but came off during the 2nd qtr and spent time with the physio's. Played under some duress in the 3rd qtr, then limped off about the 13min mark. Took no further part.
Kreuzer - didn't set the world on fire, yet appears to have the world at his feet.He was unlucky to miss out on the "best" list. A good game. I feel he'll be taken at No. 1, despite the good form of some West Aussies.
Maric - kicked 4, and showed a lot of polish. He reminds me a lot of a young Nathan Brown - perhaps not as much flair, but with a deadly accurate kick. Many people say that we shouldn't take a small forward at No.17/18, but this guy is a great finisher, and can play on the ball. He played on-ball for 5 minutes in the 2nd qtr, and then again for the first 10 mins of the last qtr. In that time on-ball in the last qtr he had 4 kicks, one handball, and 2 tackles - not too bad in 10 mins of play.
Daniher - very good until injured - will be seriously looked at by Essendon and Swans under F/S.
Gaertner - 196cm played on the wing - a bit unco and untidy, but good raw material
Farmer - very solid back pocket - nothing flash
Croft - 192cm - showed a bit in defence
Grimes - very good in 2nd half
Hurley - dominant in last qtr

I liked Maric the most.
Simpson played mainly across half-forward - he was okay - I thought his form in the first game was more impressive. The ruck was shared between Kreuzer and Sullivan v McEvoy. All three are good. Simpson at 194cm is a promising KP.
-
Finally, a word on the WA boys - they are chock full of good 190cm players
Myers 190
Pears 192
Notte 194
Rance 194
Morton 192
Gourdis 193
all good players.

Cheers GB.
If Kreuzer goes at 1st pick then it'll be either us or Carlton who get him. I'm still unsure about us taking a ruckman with our first pick and missing out on a quality onballer. Kreuzer reminds me a bit of Josh Fraser. Cotchin is/was classed at #2 but he is more a Lids type. Interesting to see which way we go with our first pick especially if we don't end up with first pick. Plough would love to draft the WA kids.
Thanks for the correction on Simpson. He did a fair bit of the ruckwork with Sullivan against SA while Kreuzer played ruck rover hence why I thought he was a ruckman.
Any thoughts GB on the youngest Selwood? Apparently below Joel at Geelong but up there with his other two older brothers.
-
You could build a 10 year defence with Pears, Myers and Rance. Masten has nice hands and I feel his ability to feed might actually be really useful for the type of runners we have. Sampey is ok, Notte reminds me of Neil Balme minus about 30 kgs, Morton knows how to use it brilliantly. Id be picking the WA boys as well.
-

My feeling is that if you draft him you will get a sure bet AFL player.
He looks accomplished. No champ, but will play in your best 22 on a regular basis.

I like Pears and Myers. Less keen on Rance.
If we had picks 1, 17 and 18, we could do a lot worse than pick Kreuzer, Maric and Pears/Myers.

hartlett too young, gun mid next year. At this early stage looks like he is competing with Naitunai for a richmond guernsey next year ;) :rollin
-
I think a PP and 1st pick next year is what we need. NATANUI and HARTLETT are getting big wraps. In order to achieve this we have to go full bore youth now and load up on youth this year getting rid of senior players who only ever deliver cheap wins. There is dead set no point getting cheap wins this year and no point finishing with 10 wins next year.

Chris Masten
Sandgropers new kings of juniors
Emma Quayle | July 12, 2007
IN PAST years, two types of teams have turned up to the AFL's under-18 championships. There have been teams filled with talented, draftable players who haven't been able to win games.
Then there have been squads filled with less gifted types, who the recruiters have been less keen to see, but who have come together much better and won.
This year, Western Australia did a little bit of both. In 2006, it lost all three matches at the national carnival, having entered with the most highly rated team. Still, it had 16 players make AFL lists come draft time.
This year, its squad was considered less talented than the Vic Metro line-up, but had eight players make the All-Australian squad and won all three games by large margins. A 77-point win over South Australia at Casey Fields yesterday clinched the title.
Cale Morton won the Larke Medal as the best division one player, one vote ahead of teammate Rhys Palmer. After dominating the first two games, Palmer has made sure clubs will keep an eye on him for the rest of the year.
Morton, Chris Masten and David Myers will be snapped up reasonably early in the draft, with fellow All-Australians Patrick McGinnity and Alex Rance enhancing their own chances and Daniel Rich and Nick Naitanui becoming two to watch for next year. Morton is the younger brother of West Coast player Mitch and Hawthorn's Jarryd, an agile 192-centimetre player who can fill almost any spot on the ground.
Vic Metro was afflicted with the problem WA once had, if not to the same extent. After being thumped by WA in their first match, the Victorians responded with two wins, their eight-goal victory over Vic Country leaving them in second place overall.
They had four members of their highly rated squad make the All-Australian team Matthew Kreuzer, Addam Maric, captain Jack Grimes and Michael Hurley, who held down full-back throughout the carnival, but is not old enough to be drafted this season.
The West Australians' win was their first since the likes of Paul Hasleby, Darren Glass, Adam Hunter, Joel Corey, Chance Bateman and Leon Davis played in their 1999 title.
They won in 1985, with a team featuring John Worsfold, Peter Sumich, Guy McKenna, Scott Watters, Paul Peos, Chris Lewis and Chris Waterman, and AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan expects a similar number of AFL players to emerge from the current group.
"We always emphasise that this championship is about two things trying to win the title but about ensuring everyone who has a chance to get drafted or make the AFL is given every opportunity," he said.

2008 Prospect: WA's Nicholas Naitanui takes a strong mark.
WA midfield pick of crop
12 July 2007 Herald Sun
Gareth Trickey
VICTORIAN clubs are expected to look interstate for the next crop of AFL midfielders.
Two recruiting managers at yesterday's national under-18 championships at Casey Fields, Cranbourne, emphasised the gap between the midfields of Victoria's two under-18 sides and that of Western Australia.
Melbourne recruiting manager Craig Cameron and Geelong's Stephen Wells said the biggest talking point to come out this year's titles was the dominance of WA's midfield.
"I think there is a lack of midfielders outside of WA," Cameron said.
"There's a fair number of talls but I'm not sure there is a lot of pace across the teams."
Wells said AFL clubs preferred to take a broad view of the under-18 competition this early in the year and had not compared the strengths and weaknesses of this year's players with previous years.
"Our job is to know all the players we think are potential AFL players and all the different positions (they can play)," Wells said. "Later on in the year we will assess exactly what our needs are."
AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said the strength of the ruckmen and medium-sized midfielders this year compensated for a lack of depth among teams.
He said the under-18 national championship served as a preview of what was on offer at this year's AFL draft camp.
"I think there is no doubt the medium midfielders and ruckmen are as good as any other year," Sheehan
"There might not be some of the key-position players, but it ebbs and flows. Some years you might have a lot of tall defenders or a lot of forwards."
WA confirmed its status as the premier under-18 team this year with a win against South Australia yesterday in the Division 1 grand final.
WA controlled the game from the first bounce to win by 77 points, 20.11 (131) to 8.6 (54).
Rhys Palmer was awarded most valuable player for Western Australia.
Teammate Cale Morton, brother of Hawthorn's Jarryd and West Coast's Mitch, claimed the Larke Medal for the Division 1 best-and-fairest.
Vic Metro beat Vic County by 48 points in their intrastate hitout, 17.8 (110) to 9.8 (62). Northern Knights ruckman Matthew Kreuzer was the best for Vic Metro and North Ballarat's Nick Suban was named the most valuable player for Vic Country.

The problem is could the club afford another season like this year. The pressure for change within the footy dept would be immense. Financially we aren't out of the woods yet and there may be a dip in membership numbers next year if we again fail to win any games early on.
In any case the AFL may change the draft rules again if Carlton ends up with the first pick despite not finishing last.

These seem to be the names bandied around the web and press to make up the top 30-35.
Matthew Kruezer (VM)
Trent Cotchin (VM)
Jack Grimes (VM)
Chris Masten (WA)
Lachlan Henderson (VC)
Bradley Ebert (SA)
Rhys Palmer (WA)
Cale Morton (WA)
Jarad Grant (VM)
Ben McEvoy (VC)
Marlan Motlop (NT)
Tom Bellchambers (TAS)
David Myers (WA)
Cyril Rioli (NT)
Tony Notte (WA)
Callan Ward (VM)
Tom Collier (TAS)
Pat Veszpremi (VM)
Scott Selwood (VC)
Tom McNamara (SA)
Adam Maric (VM)
James Wundke (SA)
Steven Gaertner (VM)
James Mulligan (QLD)
Brent Connelly (VC)
Tayte Pears (WA)
James Polkinghorne (VM)
Luke Potts (VM)
Ashley Arrowsmith (VM)
Scott Simpson (VM)
Mitchell Farmer (VM)
De Bruin (VM)
Dan McKenna (VC)
Hamish Hartlett (SA)
Tom Holmes (SA)
Personally, I'd add:
Hurley VM
Daniher VM
Sullivan VM
and I also liked the look of Kriston Thompson SA
Thanks GB and bluey. Taking away Hurley and Hartlett who are ineligible for this year's draft, that leaves just 37 names. If we end up with say picks 2, 18, 20, 36 ... we'll only scrape into the third round of the draft before looking at a Silvester or Neville at pick 50 say. We need to hold onto our PP.
Shame about Naitanui. In that pic his hands make the footy look like one of those little kid size one.

regardless, naitunai (correct spelling?) is still a project type.
If he was available this year I wouldn't take him (kicking action not perfect, still has plenty to learn about positioning around the ground, still very raw). A year is a long time, and next year he may be a gun prospect

A bit like JON eh :shh
The aflphotos pic of Naitunai easily out-reaching his SA opponent in the ruck is freaky :gobdrop

perhaps, but if you were to see JON pre-drafting he was actually pretty good, don't know why his skills have gone down hill. prob down on confidence

Even if confidence is to blame it's then a massive drop off to what you'd expect in terms of skills and decision making from a first round draftee. Maybe against kids in junior footy JON may have gotten away with it. More time and space especially in WA footy.
I can see why JON was drafted as there's heaps of upside to his game outside of his kicking and decision making. He's also currently lacking match-fitness due to missing the whole preseason. However kids with suspect kicking and decision making should not go first round. It wasn't just Richmond either that considered JON an early pick. Every single phantom draft had him in their first round selections. Peterson was pick 60 (granted different draft) and that's where IMO JON should have been picked up.

Natanui would kick 80 goals a year at full forward standing on peoples heads taking grabs in the goalsquare, before having a run around the ground. Kreuzer in 2007 and Natanui in 2008 and RFC will have 2 stars.

His AIS/draft camp results would be incredible for vertical leap.
Sadly standing on people's heads is a dying art in AFL footy.

People need to get over this notion that great athletes make great players. Yes Natanui is a great athlete but he struggles with the basics of football. he's young and he might learn but give me a natural footballer anyday. I just want us to recruit natural smart footballers who are not slugs.
Agree with MT about not choosing a ruckman with the first pick. Kruezer has too much Josh Fraser's about him for my liking.
I've watched the WA v VM game a few times now. People dismissing Palmer may live to regret this. He is a pure, smart, instinctive footballers who can cut you apart. He is brilliant in close and dangerous in space. Ignore the reports that he's slow and one sided - that's all crap. Yes he uses his left alot but he's good enough to get to his left when most others can't. A Shannon Grant type with more flair and spunk
Masten is a pure inside type. If we lack inside mids and are desperate for them then we should seriously look at him. He is at every contest, positions himself perfectly and can read the play, gather and dispose to a very high level. He is a posession machine who makes the right decisions in tight and would take alot of heat off Foley. A Kane Cornes type that will always have high posession numbers.
Alot of hype about Morton but I'm not convinced. Great kick, great mark, good size. But doesn't win his own ball and needs to be fed. Not a true inside mid and not a true key position. Will be great at a club with these 2 positions covered but we need the foundation work first before we can consider someone like him. Goddard like.
Rance is the ultimate full back we've been crying out for. 194cm, fast, strong, agile and good skills. Spitting image to Simmonds appearace wise. Big enough to play on monsters and quick and agile enough to play on the quicker ff's. Would seriously consider him at pick 1 coz he won't last till pick 17. But do you recruit a full back at 1 or 2?
Pears is very impressive and was surprised at his height of 192cm's because of his speed and agility. Great at spoiling and mopping up from his own spoil. If we don't get Rance we should seriously consider him at 17.
Kruezer - good, great, can see where the hype is coming from. But a ruck at 1? Big question. think inside mids and key backs are more urgent.
Cotchin - had a shoulder injury and was dissapointing. Great TAC reports but it bothers me he can't shake a tag. Do we need another Deledio?
There is definately alot of talent in that WA squad and wouldn't mind if we picked up 6 kids from there.
Some other kids I like that we can look at with mid picks -
WA - Gourdis, McGinnity, Ellard, Myers
VM - Simpson,
Later picks -
WA - Garlett, Jackey
VM - Polkinghorne, Sullivan.

good summary HH, pretty much spot on :clapping
I wouldn't mind Kreuzer, he is a very very good player. Holds his own in the ruck, but absolutely kills it around the ground. Racks up huge numbers, good kick, very mobile.
My number 1 at this stage.
If we can upgrade our PP to a 7-14 pick and pick up McEvoy, i will be wanting Cotchin or Masten at no.1
Although had a sub-par champs still rate him very highly. My only question on Masten is his kicking and burst speed. Pretty good speed over longer distances and a great tank. Just lacks that speed to quickly burn out away from contests. Kicking is very good over shorter distances (<40 m) but hit and miss and lacks penetration over longer distances

Ditto. Well said Harry :clapping.
Ending up with pick 2 may be a blessing. Keeping hold of our priority pick is the priority (excuse the pun). We need to find another first round pick preferably in the top 10.

Wouldnt surprise me if Kreuzer or Morton is picked by us at our first pick. I understand Morton is well liked at Punt Rd.
Rance is the player I most want from this draft. Have said it for months and will continue to say, he looks like the type of player we can turn into a Full Back. To get him we need an upgrade- I would be doing whatever I could to get the pick to get him.
Palmer shouldnt be on the radar for us. Hes overated by many in my opinion. Only a one sided player, not overly quick, a dime a dozen type player in the AFL.
-
Morton although a fantastic talent, is not what Richmond are crying out for.
what we need ATM is an inside mid, not one who is a classy finisher but can't win his own ball.
Masten is the one i'd be looking at over in WA for our 1st pick
-
I like Mastens use of the footy by hand. I get the feeling he could allow the deledios of this world to really shine, the problem is we have so many holes and not enough picks. we are a rabble at the moment.
-
I personally don't mind Masten, gut-busting runner, makes it to so many contests. Fantasticly clean hands and has the composure to extract the ball with class.
As you said Ramps, by hand he is fine and I have no qualms.
Only flaws are IMO long-kicking and acceleration.
Short-kicking is actually rather good IMO, but kicking long is very hit and miss. Firstly lacks penetration, and this affects his accuracy.
I hear he is a junior champ at 400 and 800 m. And from what I have seen beyond 10 or so metres, he speed is pretty good. But it is the first couple of steps that have me questioning him. In terms of foot speed rather like Marc Murphy, so if Murphy can hide this flaw then Masten probably could.
BTW, a poster on PRE by the name of LukeHodge15 reckons that Masten may actually slide to our current PP pick :o Would be brilliant if it happened. But this could quite possibly happen. Read some posts last year on BF that he is a bit of a party boy and likes the grog (don't quote me though). Connors allegedly is similar and he slid, so Masten may be a chance to slide, although not as far because the depth of this year's draft is no where near as good as last.
Rance looks like a good prospect, but if we managed on upgrade to a pick around 10, and Rance, Henderson and McEvoy were available. In terms of my preferences it would be McEvoy>Henderson>Rance
-
We should seriously look at Masten with our first pick. He is very good with his hands in close and has great smarts. Nathan Foley would benefit from having Masten alongside him because at the moment he is the only player opposition teams put a heavy tag on. Having another classy extractor will release Foley who would be even more damaging than he already is. The other benefits of getting Masten would be (a) we can turn over the likes of Tuck and Johnson quicker along with their associated clangers, and (b) it would help the outside types of Tambling, Deledio, JON, Casserly, Meyer etc with cleaner and more effective clearance work. It's a ripple effect where the first ripple is created by the classy extractors. Hawthorn looked a shadow of itself without Mitchell.
-
Blaszer from Gippsland Power would be one of my picks he's under the radar a bit & could be a huge pickup from 30 to 50 for any club
Played senior football for trafalgar at young age & continues to rise to the next levels

What about Jackson Hall? I saw him play, and he's a nice size for an AFL wingman.

If we don't get first pick then, yeah Harry, Masten is one to look at. I know Cotchin was carrying a shoulder injury in the U18 Champs and we all know who was the last early pick not to go No 1 due to concerns about his shoulders but we really need a genuine ballwinner or two at centre clearances to go with Foley.
