breaking a tag is a historical issue with Lids going back to his U18 years.

Last year and this year on a occasion it has been shown up eg vs attard or sherman.

Reckon Lids will overcome it in time, just needs more support around him and more experience

SOUTH Australia started its under-18 national championship campaign with a convincing 50-point victory against Victoria Country at AAMI Stadium last night.

Setting up the win with a strong first quarter, the Croweaters handled the greasy conditions far better than the visitors and with a 32-point lead at the first change, were always going to be difficult to chase down.

"We talked about that beforehand, that winning the first quarter had to be high on the agenda," SA coach Brenton Phillips said.

"Their eyeballs were hanging out of their heads when they ran out of these rooms so it was really good they could compose themselves, get after the footy and be strong at the contest. I think that's where we set up the match."

Victoria Country - with forward Haelen Kay leading strongly - surged during the second term to close the gap to 17 points at half-time.

But after regrouping at the main change, SA booted the first three goals of the third term to steady and take a six-goal buffer into three-quarter time.

Port Magpies pair Levi Greenwood and Brad Ebert, who have both sampled league football in the SANFL this year, showed the benefit of playing against bigger bodies by dominating for the Croweaters.

SA captain Ebert started in attack and proved to be too strong in several marking contests while Greenwood continually hit the ball hard and rebounded off half-back.

"Wasn't Greenwood good? He just straight-lined every ball he went for," Phillips said.

"I thought our efforts to tackle, harass and smother were really first-class."

Crumbing forward Matt Wright, who kicked four goals and set up one other, was a livewire in attack for SA while Hamish Hartlett - younger brother of Carlton's Adam - contributed three goals.

SA takes on arch-rival Victoria Metro - which lost its opening match to Western Australia - in its second game on Friday at Skilled Stadium, Geelong.

Summary

* Home ground advantage was probably the reason why WA and SA won comfortably respectively.  It's meant to be a National championships so after the Vic sides had won the past 7 championships it was time to move them out of Victoria. A chance to see people in a different light and under different conditions as that's what will happen in the AFL.

* Kreuzer - really stood up to his high ranking. Gone up another few notches this year from last year. Worked hard, endurance and speed incredible for his size. Clean skills who can push forward.

* Cotchin - dirty day. Had a companion all day and maybe that's the first he's had in his career. Wil learn he needs to work harder to burn off his direct opponent. Still a good player as he's been watching him since U16 but it wasn't his day.

* Surprises - WA kids. A few recruiters may now push them higher up.

* Rhys Palmer - was a bit player but got 35 possies and said pick me. Took 'em on. Run, beat tackles and bounce. Could have kicked 6. Watch for him in 2nd and 3rd game. 8 senior games at East Freo.

* Carl Morton - super impressive. 6' 4" played on the wing. Speed, endurance, lace out passes. 25 possies.

* David Myers - Similar size. big ground and fast track suited him. Moved beautifully across HB. Left footer. Important player for WA.

* Alex Rance - played across HB. 194cm Key defender. Father of Murray Rance but not eligible for F/S.

* Brad Ebert - terrific. Cousin of Brett. 28 possies. Played deep forward then into the midfield. Had a big influence wherever he went. Just 17 and already SA captain. Playing senior footy for Port Magpies. Strong on both sides of the body. Good in the air. 6' 2". Early draft pick.

* Levi Greenwood - left footer, strong body played across HB.

* Dan McKenna - key forward, key back, 194cm. Fine year for Gippsland Power

* Ben McEvoy - 199cm ruckman/key forward. Had 10 marks. Good defensive marks. Early draft choice. Enormous potential.

* James Polkinghorne - quite a good player for Vic Metro. 181cm, strongly built. played onball. Solid game first up. From Strathmore.

* Adam Maric - very good 3 goals but shoulder injury. 5 goals in TAC Cup final last year. Small forward. Accuracy level is 85% at goal. Long kick as well as clever around goals.

* Darren Jackie - typical Indigenous small forward. 180cm. Light but promising. Knows where the goals are.  Long kick as well as clever around goals.

* Next game - Div 2 Thurs, Div Friday at Kardinia Park.

Interesting result when you consider that last years draft only had one draftee from NSW/ACT and about 10 were drafted from Qld!
