Title: World Series / MLB
Post by: cub on October 25, 2007, 02:15:11 PM
Boston back for another shot at the title after the curse of the Bambino was lifted in 04.

Playing the Colorado rockies wgho had won something like 21 of their last 22.

Boston go in slight favourites and in game 1 blow the Rockies away 13 - 1 to go 1 - nil up in best of 7.

If you got fox have a look, not a bad game.

Go SOX

Taco Bell offered free tacos if a player stole a base during the World Series. Well it happened in today's game and for four hours Americans could score a free taco lol.

Boston has just won the World Series in a clean sweep.

Boston were $7.50 to win the World Series Friday last week after they were 3-1 down to the Cleveland Indians.
In 2004 they were 3-0 down in their divisional finals before winning 4-3 and then going on to win the World Series 4-0.
I'll make a note for next time the year we win the wooden spoon I'll wait till the Sox are down in the divisional finals  and out bet the kitchen sink and watch them sweep the World Series. :cheers

No I didn't try to get tickets for the World Series.

Was in Boston for game 1 but it was sold out.

Which means the only tickets you could get were from ticket brokers (aka legal scalpers ..that's how we got tickets to the Yankee game) and the starting price (I was told) was over $600 a ticket for the bleachers :gobdrop

Boston back to the AL Division playoffs v Tampa for something different.

Dodgers v Phillie in the NL

GO SOX - Well and truly buried the curse, let's hope the Tigers (AFL) can do the same soon.

Disappointed today as I was hoping for a White Sox championship.

Although a Yankee's fan I have a soft spot for the White Sox. I suupose they are my 2nd team

Will be sort of supporting the Dodgers now as their Manager Joe Torre used to be the Yankees manager until this year.

It is a the 13th straight year that a team managed by Torre has made the post season (12 for the Yankees & now 1 for LA)

Hahahahaha was it Tampa or the Marlins a few years back who beat Boston when the fan caught the ball in the stand just as the outfielder was ready to catch it and it was the turning point of the whole series as Boston went on to lose because of that play after they seemed to be in control of it. I think they were 3-1 up lost the game involving the fan catching the ball and went on to lose the other two to lose the series 4-3 and fail to make the World Series.

Tampa Bay tie up the American League championship 1-1 after winning in 11 innings 9-8. It heads to Fenway Park.... for 3 games

Hitters on top today :clapping

The bad Josh Beckett(Boston's "best" pitcher) turned up for the BoSox today  :clapping ;D

Phillies & Dodgers on tomorrow in LA, with the Dodgers down 0-2 and not looking good at all

Tampa was leading 3 - 1 going into game 5

Boston 7 - Nil down going into bottom of seventh, then decide right at the last minute as is typical Sox style to play the get out of jail free card.

Win game 5    7 - 8

series 3 - 2

What odds they close this out and sweep the WS -  :rollin

Yes, their big hitters came good at the right to score runs, the TB Rays hitters on the other hand went quiet.

Bad luck to Aussie tampa bay pitcher Grant Balfour.... on the 2nd aussie to play in a world series  :clapping

Come on Philliles then. Can't stand Yankees. Don't really have a team but follow the Cincinnati Reds a bit. Phillies vying to be first NL team to go back to back since the Big Red Machine in the 70s.

Yankees have never looked back since George Costanza arrived and departed from the organisation. :lol :rollin :lol

I don't really have a team either but judging but gambling on American sports has been lucrative for me in the past and I feel the Yankees will win the World Series.

Back to the Bronx we go after the Phillies win game 5

8-6

Diabolical pitching performance by the Yankees starter A J Burnett, who lasted to the third. The 2 home runs given up by Yankee pitcher Phil Coke (the joke who choked) in the 7th proved costly as well

Great effort by the Yanks to get as close as they did

But I am very very disappointed

Yep when Jeter busted his ankle our season went down the tiolet.

As for ARod  :chuck :chuck Always knew he was selfish so 'n' so but in Mae one saw the most selfish batting effort I can remember. Disgusting!

But he is not the only one not hitting. Cano = hit less, Swisher swinging but not contacting, Granderson not good

Verlander and Valverde 8)

Valverde? You are kidding blew another save in game 1, gave up a HR to Ichiro and and then the tying HR to Raul Ibanez. Cannot see Valverde being given closer duties again any time soon

That you mention Valverde in the same sentence as Verlander who's probably the best pitcher in the majors was enough for a "you're kidding"

Valverde has converted a major league-best 93.2% (110 of 118) of his save opportunities since joining the Tigers in 2010. He'll be back.

He's not a starter so you can't compare him to Verlander but you can certainly mention him in the same sentence as the AL MVP.

I bet I know where we'll find WP around March 22/23 next year:

Let’s play ball: Sydney to bring in US season

Date:  June 13, 2013 - 8:10AM
Adrian Proszenko

The Major League Baseball season will begin in Sydney next March, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks set to play two games at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Fairfax Media can reveal that Sydney has won the rights to host the opening series, marking 100 years since the Chicago White Sox played against a combined NSW team in 1914.

Major League Baseball, the Australian Baseball League and Destination NSW have been working on the project for several years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday.

The move is a massive coup for Australian sport and for Sydney. It is expected the matches will be seen by a global television audience of 175 million, with about 75million of those viewers in the US alone. The  event is also expected to provide a  boost to the NSW economy, drawing at least 15,000 overseas tourists and generating tens of millions of dollars to the local economy.

One of the biggest drawcards won’t be playing. Dodgers owner Earvin ‘‘Magic’’ Johnson is a further selling point in what will be one of the biggest events since the Sydney Olympics. A National Basketball Association hall of famer following his exploits for the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson will watch his team play at the SCG on March 22 and 23.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are expected to be in Sydney for six days. It is understood that a warm-up game – potentially against an Australian all-star team or the  Sydney Blue Sox – could be considered.

When Fairfax Media broke the news of plans to take the event to Sydney on October 26 of last year, MLB officials denied the story.

‘‘We are not currently in negotiations with the Dodgers or any team to play in Australia,’’ Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said at the time.

The negotiations have been a highly guarded secret, with MLB officials threatening to scupper the deal if details were made public.

Jason Moore, the director of sports event-marketing firm Moore Sports, has been working on the project for almost seven years.

‘‘We’ve been to the altar a couple of times and we now believe we’re getting up to bat, so to speak,’’ Moore said last year.

‘‘This will be the biggest sporting event in Sydney since the 2003 Rugby World Cup final. The time zone and the scheduling of the game means we’re maximising the exposure throughout the world. Our planned Sunday afternoon game will go live to the US West Coast at8pm, prime time on Saturday night. We’re not talking about exhibition games – we’re talking about ... real-deal competition games.’’

The move to Australia marks just the sixth time that a series have been played outside the US, with three previously played in Japan. But rather than just a one-off, Australian officials hope to stage games every four years.

Unlikely, Smokey don't really like either of the teams. I knew it wouldn't be my Yankees but I thought Pittsburgh or the Twins might have been a show  ;D

yep Nope it was Pittsburgh (Pirates) -v- San Francisco (Giants)

The Giants pitcher has been suspended for 3 games and the Giants Manager suspended for 1

Good news (if we decide to go) is that there's going to be a ticket pre-sale for ABL members so they will get first crack at the public tickets

Question gerks, will the SCG re-development be finished by March 2014?

Looks like it will be WP.  This was the slightly different version of the same story from the Age RSS Feed:

The Major League Baseball season will begin in Sydney next year, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks set to play two games at the Sydney Cricket Ground in March.

Fairfax Media can reveal that Sydney has won the rights to host the opening series, marking 100 years since the Chicago White Sox played against a combined New South Wales team in 1914.

Major League Baseball, the Australian Baseball League and Destination NSW have been working on the project for several years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday.

The move is a massive coup for Australian sport and for Sydney in particular. It's expected the matches will be seen by a global television audience of 175 million, with about 75 million in the US alone. The showpiece event is also expected to give a huge boost to the NSW economy, drawing at least 15,000 overseas tourists and generating tens of millions of dollars to the local economy.

One of the biggest drawcards won't be playing. Dodgers owner Earvin "Magic" Johnson, one of the most identifiable figures in world sport, is a further selling point in what will be one of the biggest events since the Sydney Olympics. A NBA hall of famer following his exploits for the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson will oversee his team playing at the SCG in March on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23. Major renovations at the ground will be completed before the fixtures.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are expected to be in Sydney for six days and it is believed a warm-up game – potentially against an Australian All Stars team or the Sydney Blue Sox – could be considered.

MLB bankrolls the ABL competition, which is used by American clubs to identify and develop prospective Majors talent.

Local officials are expecting a huge spike in interest and participation following the visit.

Got tickets via the pre-sale too gerks  :thumbsup

We are going up for the Sunday game. Got seats in the O'Reilly stand along the 3 base line

Agree about them being pricey

But I remember when we went to old Yankee stadium back on 2007 we paid $260 a ticket for seats at the top of the stand that ran along the first base line. So in comparison to those these tkts seemed on par price wise.

Believe the bleacher seats; the cheapest ones are almost all gone?

Good stuff  :thumbsup

That time of year you might be looking into the sun all day in the OReilly  ;D

Got bronze front row along 1st base line for game 1 and outfield a couple of bays further along for game 2.

Yeah not many tix left and the MLB honchos said if it sells out they'll be back for more games maybe even as soon as next year.

Great to see the MLB handout some decent panalties to 13 players for using PEDs

Hardest hit is Alex Rodriguez suspended for the remainder of this season and all of 2014 = about 211 or 214 games

Scumbag A-Rod is appealing though and can while his appeal is being heard

I am Yankees fan and I am disgusted they played him today. I know under the rules he's allowed to play while appealing but morally it's bankrupt.

All I can say is GO PITTSBURGH, best story in the MLB right now

Go PIRATES Go

I'm also hoping Cabrera can pop a couple into the neighbours backyard.

I guess Colon will be starting for the A's. Will be interesting to see how he goes. The guy amazes me as to how good he is at 40 years of age. Miggy will test him though.

You are correct tiga, game 2 is in St Louis

Games 3 & 4 (if required) are in Pittsburgh

Good old AJ Burnett  ::) ::)

The AJ I knew from his Yankees days turned up today, the horrible one. When he is bad his is worse than woeful & pathetic

Watched the 1st inning this morning before I left for work. Thought then he didn't look good, just didn't seem to have the control. Other thing with AJ and this will sound stupid but early in games if he is sweating heavily he is likely not going to be "on song".

LA & Atlanta palying now and the Dodgers are up 2-0 in the 3rd
