I bet I know where we'll find WP around March 22/23 next year:

Let’s play ball: Sydney to bring in US season

Date:  June 13, 2013 - 8:10AM
Adrian Proszenko

The Major League Baseball season will begin in Sydney next March, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks set to play two games at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Fairfax Media can reveal that Sydney has won the rights to host the opening series, marking 100 years since the Chicago White Sox played against a combined NSW team in 1914.

Major League Baseball, the Australian Baseball League and Destination NSW have been working on the project for several years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday.

The move is a massive coup for Australian sport and for Sydney. It is expected the matches will be seen by a global television audience of 175 million, with about 75million of those viewers in the US alone. The  event is also expected to provide a  boost to the NSW economy, drawing at least 15,000 overseas tourists and generating tens of millions of dollars to the local economy.

One of the biggest drawcards won’t be playing. Dodgers owner Earvin ‘‘Magic’’ Johnson is a further selling point in what will be one of the biggest events since the Sydney Olympics. A National Basketball Association hall of famer following his exploits for the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson will watch his team play at the SCG on March 22 and 23.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are expected to be in Sydney for six days. It is understood that a warm-up game – potentially against an Australian all-star team or the  Sydney Blue Sox – could be considered.

When Fairfax Media broke the news of plans to take the event to Sydney on October 26 of last year, MLB officials denied the story.

‘‘We are not currently in negotiations with the Dodgers or any team to play in Australia,’’ Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney said at the time.

The negotiations have been a highly guarded secret, with MLB officials threatening to scupper the deal if details were made public.

Jason Moore, the director of sports event-marketing firm Moore Sports, has been working on the project for almost seven years.

‘‘We’ve been to the altar a couple of times and we now believe we’re getting up to bat, so to speak,’’ Moore said last year.

‘‘This will be the biggest sporting event in Sydney since the 2003 Rugby World Cup final. The time zone and the scheduling of the game means we’re maximising the exposure throughout the world. Our planned Sunday afternoon game will go live to the US West Coast at8pm, prime time on Saturday night. We’re not talking about exhibition games – we’re talking about ... real-deal competition games.’’

The move to Australia marks just the sixth time that a series have been played outside the US, with three previously played in Japan. But rather than just a one-off, Australian officials hope to stage games every four years.

Wasn't they the two teams who had a punch on yesterday in their game after the pitcher threw the ball into the batter.

Unlikely, Smokey don't really like either of the teams. I knew it wouldn't be my Yankees but I thought Pittsburgh or the Twins might have been a show  ;D

Good news (if we decide to go) is that there's going to be a ticket pre-sale for ABL members so they will get first crack at the public tickets

Question gerks, will the SCG re-development be finished by March 2014?

Looks like it will be WP.  This was the slightly different version of the same story from the Age RSS Feed:

The Major League Baseball season will begin in Sydney next year, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks set to play two games at the Sydney Cricket Ground in March.

Fairfax Media can reveal that Sydney has won the rights to host the opening series, marking 100 years since the Chicago White Sox played against a combined New South Wales team in 1914.

Major League Baseball, the Australian Baseball League and Destination NSW have been working on the project for several years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday.

It's expected the matches will be seen by a global television audience of 175 million, with about 75 million in the US alone. One of the biggest drawcards won't be playing. Dodgers owner Earvin "Magic" Johnson, one of the most identifiable figures in world sport, is a further selling point in what will be one of the biggest events since the Sydney Olympics. A NBA hall of famer following his exploits for the Los Angeles Lakers, Johnson will oversee his team playing at the SCG in March on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23. Major renovations at the ground will be completed before the fixtures.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks are expected to be in Sydney for six days and it is believed a warm-up game – potentially against an Australian All Stars team or the Sydney Blue Sox – could be considered.

MLB bankrolls the ABL competition, which is used by American clubs to identify and develop prospective Majors talent.

Local officials are expecting a huge spike in interest and participation following the visit.

Got tickets via the pre-sale too gerks  :thumbsup

We are going up for the Sunday game. Got seats in the O'Reilly stand along the 3 base line

Agree about them being pricey

But I remember when we went to old Yankee stadium back on 2007 we paid $260 a ticket for seats at the top of the stand that ran along the first base line. So in comparison to those these tkts seemed on par price wise.

Believe the bleacher seats; the cheapest ones are almost all gone?

Good stuff  :thumbsup

That time of year you might be looking into the sun all day in the OReilly  ;D

Got bronze front row along 1st base line for game 1 and outfield a couple of bays further along for game 2.

Yeah not many tix left and the MLB honchos said if it sells out they'll be back for more games maybe even as soon as next year.

Great to see the MLB handout some decent panalties to 13 players for using PEDs

Hardest hit is Alex Rodriguez suspended for the remainder of this season and all of 2014 = about 211 or 214 games

Scumbag A-Rod is appealing though and can while his appeal is being heard

I am Yankees fan and I am disgusted they played him today. I know under the rules he's allowed to play while appealing but morally it's bankrupt.

All I can say is GO PITTSBURGH, best story in the MLB right now

Go PIRATES Go

After 21 losing season the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 81st game of this season

This means they are guaranteed a winning season for the first time since 1992

A fantastic effort, a great sporting story for the 2013 MLB season

Bring on the playoffs

Go Pirates  :clapping :clapping
