Our midfield's strengths and weaknesses?
« on: June 03, 2011, 04:48:45 AM »
Going through the head-to-head stats over the first 10 round it's fairly obvious our midfield is struggling most weeks to win the contested footy and the clearances which was a strength of ours last year. On the other hand we are winning more of the uncontested footy compared to 2010. Sp those two stats have flipped around for some reason.

We are also giving away more frees most weeks (unsocialable footy or just undisciplined?) and are getting well beaten in the hitouts virtually every second week  :-\.

And apart from the Collingwood game, we have had far less tackles than the opposition when we've lost.

Tackles    Clearances    Con. possies   Uncon. possies    Frees     Hitouts
R1. Carlton        57 - 80      50 - 46        127 - 148          180 - 224         27 - 22      26 - 43
R2. St Kilda       74 - 72      40 - 44         137 - 143          175 - 176         26 - 26     42 - 41
R3. Hawthorn     75 - 88      45 - 44        153 - 164          128 - 190        28 - 24      34 - 47
R4. Collingwood 59 - 57      37 - 48        111 - 153          242 - 208        17 - 23     47 - 22
R5. North Melb.  67 - 84      42 - 44        137 - 157          261 - 174        19 - 27     32 - 36
R6. Brisbane      70 - 57      42 - 40       163 - 131          267 - 216          21 - 18     37 - 38
R7. Fremantle    57 - 48      35 - 42        127 - 159          253 - 143         21 - 24      17 - 46
R8. Bulldogs      56 - 71      37 - 45        126 - 160          239 - 220        15 - 19      36 - 34
R9. Essendon    83 - 76      28 - 50        142 - 176          231 - 144         20 - 23     39 - 54
R10. Port Adel.  61 - 89      45 - 42       154 - 151          203 - 152        16 - 29      32 - 47

Any thoughts on why we are ordinary this year as far as winning the contested footy and clearances?

Its still a young mid field!
The fact we have been winning a few games whilst giving up the clearances and contested ball is a positive of sorts!
We cane our back line but really what have they got when if we get smashed in the clearances like we did against Essendon?

Last year we were winning contested footy/clearances. So what has changed?

I remember reading that dimma wanted cotch and martin to get more outside footy, to protect their bodies from the buffeting contested footy brings. IIRC longevity was a factor here.

Last year edwards was high in the clearance stakes. This year his form was ordinary early on and just as he started to find some semblance of form he was injured.

Tuck's output has not been up to last years, for whatever reasons.

Any other factors?

Maybe because he's only played 2 and a half games???

I think it shows just exactly where we are, and how we are going to get there.

The fact is, we have seen a decline in certainly contested footy and clearances from last year, and possibly tackles per game. However, we we extremely poor in our disposal and had really one avenue to goal. From then to know we have seen a large increase in skills, and from what I have heard Dimma has the boys practicing skills more than most. Second of all, are structure in terms of offence, and especially transition look to be twice as good as last year. This has probably meant that time the more establish clubs spend on structures around the center clearance (The Dons I think are the best with their ability to block for Watson/ Hocking and get it to their outside mids very efficiently), from ball ups and throw ins (Freo are the best at this, though it does help having Sandilands) and defensive structures (Obviously the Pies). The reality is, is that right now with the players we have we do not have the luxury of minimizing skill based practice and maximizing structure based practices. This would have an effect on the way we play.

We are taking the hard road to our next premiership, which I think might actually get us there.

This time last year we were No.1 for centre clearances and third at stoppages around the ground.

Yet this year (prior to the Port game) we were leading the comp in disposal efficiency
Shows a change in our focus/development from last year

I have no problem with this, especially as we don't want our young midfield getting crunched in their development years as it could shorten their careers.

Good point! Clean disposal equals less contested possies!
