Haz, how has Archy been going?? It would be great to finally see him on the paddock.

Archy got a bit of a touch up from Richo in the intra-club game although he didn't get much help from upfield. 22 goals to 3 sums up where the footy spent most of it's time.

Debutant football - Meyer could debut as well

Debutant football
By Len Johnson
The Age
February 15, 2005

Collingwood and Richmond will give their supporters a tantalising glimpse into the future by fielding their brightest young draftees in Friday night's Wizard Cup opener.

Tigers coach Terry Wallace has indicated he will select the club's first two picks in last year's national draft - No. 1 selection Brett Deledio and No. 4 Richard Tambling - while the Tigers' third pick, Danny Meyer, who was taken at No. 12, seems certain to join them.

Allied with youngsters like Daniel Jackson - who played six of the last seven games last season - Brent Hartigan, Andrew Raines and Tom Roach, this could give the 2005 Tigers much more than a sprinkling of youth. Indeed, they will boast the youngest playing list in the AFL, with more than half the squad aged under 21

Hope Meyer gets picked. Did enough in the intra-club game to warrant a spot in the seniors.

Isn't it great to hear we've now got the youngest list after watching the same oldies making the same mistakes year after year. One of the best things about having so many early draft picks  is it spreads the pressure of expectation so we don't have just one kid copping the messiah tag. Good luck to the 3 boys  :thumbsup.

My thoughts exactly Mighty.

I remember all the oohs and aahs when Fiora was drafted and played his first game.  Same with Pettifer.  The pressure was masive for these kids and they really didn't have any peers that they could share it with.  The microscope was on them from day one and any fumble or miss kick was magnified ten fold.  As a result these kids buckled under the pressure as the expectations were too high and players with less pressure such as Newman, Zantuck etc who weren't expected to make it actually went about developing their game and have become better players.

Mighty, based on the intra club match, would you select Meyer ahead of Gilmour, Roach and Pattison ?

Isn't it refreshing to see this comment. Finally the rebuilding process has begun. :thumbsup
Now all we have to do is keep them.

Keep the ones we want that is. We will still need to turn over a fair number of players for a couple of years - including youngsters that aren't going to make it. Having lots of them should make it easier to do.

Just mentioned on the radio that Deledio, Tambling and Pattison will all play on Friday along with Knobel, Simmonds and Graham.  Good effort by the kids, especially Pattison who has had a wrist injury throughout the pre-season.

Most likely Jackson, Raines and Hartigan will also play, a new Rodan, Tivendale and Newman, a free'd up  Richo, new game plan, different jumper, Gaspar back to some fitness, Schulz at CHB etc. and it will be like watching a new team.

C'moooooooooooooooooooooooooon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would've had Gilly ahead of Meyer then Roach and Pattison say a joint third. Roach and Pattison played for the probables where many others were more prominent given they won by 120 points. I would play Meyer against the Pies Harry.

Woohoo! Thanks for that Harry :thumbsup

Raines, Hartigan and Knobel are the only ones listed there that didn't play for the probables so there's still another 3 spots up for grabs.

Bring it on!  :cheers

Richmond to unveil six newcomers

Richmond to unveil six newcomers
February 15, 2005 - 5:54PM
The Age - Breaking news

A quarter of Richmond's side this Friday night will be newcomers as the AFL club starts its new era under coach Terry Wallace.

After an off-season of sweeping change at Punt Rd, Wallace will demand his side is at least competitive, starting in Friday's Wizard Cup opener against Collingwood at Telstra Dome.

No.1 draft pick Brett Deledio and fellow draftees Richard Tambling and Adam Pattison will make their senior debuts, while recruits Troy Simmonds (Fremantle), Mark Graham (Hawthorn) and Trent Knobel (St Kilda) will also play their first games for the Tigers.

Joel Bowden will be acting captain, with the club still deciding who is its on-field leader for the season.

Wallace pointed to Carlton's resurgence under Denis Pagan in the last two seasons as a yardstick for Richmond, last year's wooden spooner.

"First up it's important to be competitive - towards the end of the last year, people were coming through the turnstiles at Richmond games with the worry that they wouldn't be competitive on any given day," Wallace said.

"When the Richmond supporters decide to pull out of their driveway, they know they are driving to a game of footy that's going to be a nice competitive game of football.

"What Carlton have achieved over the last couple of years, where they went from being an almost non-competitive footy club back to fighting and right back into the action, that's genuinely our first step."

Richmond had an unannounced training session at Optus Oval, where Wallace said potential captain Nathan Brown came through "with flying colours" to put himself in contention for Friday's game.

Wallace will demand what he calls "more spectacular" football from the Tigers, saying the side's 11-goal average for the last two seasons was "not attractive".

Bowden said the changes had been massive at the club since Wallace replaced Danny Frawley late last year and was particularly impressed with youngsters such as Deledio, Tambling and Pattison.

"We've got five of the best kids in the land and I'm in my 10th year, and I've never seen young payers come in and be so equipped to play AFL footy," he said.

"Richard Tambling and Brett Deledio have just fitted into our training superbly, it's been exciting for me."

But Wallace is keeping his expectations low on the youngsters, particularly Deledio.

He pointed out the pressure on Western Bulldog Adam Cooney last season as the league's top pick.

"He's impressed on the track and we look forward to him playing," Wallace said of Deledio.

"The expectation of us is not huge - I thought last year some of the pressure put on Adam Cooney on the first half of the season ... was just ridiculous."

Wallace also agreed with Magpies coach Mick Malthouse, who said earlier this week he expected to face a side this Friday similar to how Wallace guided the Bulldogs when he took over the club full-time in 1997.

"If you've got a belief and trust in what you're doing as a coach you don't step away too far from it," Wallace said.

Wallace also admits he is about to take a big step into the unknown on Friday night.

"The one thing I'm absolutely certain on is that by the end of Friday night, I will know a lot more about what I've got," he said.
