Its a clear failure IMHO.

What's a failure Flagman?

A failure of our administration to deliver to the coach a stand alone reserves side that can be developed the way he wants, that the administration has failed to deliver is a failure.

lol.....How were they expected to do so without the funds?  further increase our debt :huh

How about they go out and get a couple of new sponsors or something. The supporters have done their bit.

We cant have what we cant afford. ITs pretty simple really.
Have people forgotten that we are in serious debt? Far wealthier clubs than ours are still affiliated with state clubs. Not surprised at all.

A failure of our administration to deliver to the coach a stand alone reserves side that can be developed the way he wants, that the administration has failed to deliver is a failure.

Did they promise him a stand alone VFL side? No - so how is it a failure. Using your logic ff they have failed Hrdwick on this then failed the previous coach because he wanted a stand alone VFL side too. You show me any coach in the AFL that doesn't want there own stand alone "reserves" side

Have they said they want one? Yep - absolutely

But they made it very very clear when the FTF was established that hit a certain target and we would get one. We haven't hit that target. Are you suggesting that  instead of re-configuring Punt Road Oval or paying off the debt we should have used the FTF monies for a VFL team?

Or perhaps we should cut spending in say recruiting to fund it... you can't have it both ways. And throwing out the old chestnut about getting a couple of more sponsors isn't going to work. Look at the market place, some clubs are struggling to get major sponsors now (Port Adel, Dees for the front of their jumper), some are struggling to get "shorts" sponsors (GWS) then there are the other codes that are struggling for sponsors

The club would have failed if it went ahead an put a stand alone VFL side before the debt is paid off, before Punt Road is re-configured ... it's about priorities and on this they've got it right

The cost involved in not only establishing a VFL team but maintaining it year after year is massive and it would be totally irresponsible of the club to do it now

Coburg Tigers out of danger
by Sam Landsberger
Moreland Leader
5 Mar 12

AFTER a year operating in “an environment of fear”, the future of the Coburg Football Club is secure, with the Tigers winning an alignment renewal with AFL powerhouse Richmond.

Coburg general manager Jake McCauley revealed to the Leader the VFL-AFL alignment had been signed and filed to AFL Victoria, ensuring the Tigers remain tied together until at least the end of 2014.

Uncertainty swamped Coburg 12 months ago when Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale and coach Damien Hardwick said they wanted to ditch Coburg in favour of entering a reserves side to enhance their player development.

But with the AFL Tigers unable to wear the financial hurdles severing ties would create, Mr McCauley said his club was safe.

“We’re in strategic planning now but it’s really hard to know what 2015 and beyond looks like,” Mr McCauley said.

“The Coburg board made a decision to stay in an alignment for the next three years.

“We’ll continue to work to ensure this great club, which is 122 years young, continues to exist hopefully for another 122 and more.”

Mr McCauley said most VFL clubs were operating in fear last year, with alignment contracts lasting just 12 months, but were relieved AFL Victoria pushed AFL clubs to enter new three-year arrangements.

Mr McCauley ensured Coburg would not abandon its identity by ditching its name and jumper.

“Richmond has never looked or asked for that. They’re aware of the 120-odd year history and have been extremely supportive,” he said.

The Coburg-Richmond alignment is entering its 13th year and Mr McCauley said it was one of the strongest in the competition.

I don't mind the Coburg allignment, as long as we wear our jumper, are call Richmond and play at Punt Road.

The AFL this year increased the cost of running a stand alone VFL side by an extra $55,000. Probably another reason why we renewed with Coburg for another 3 years at least.

You will find all Clubs pay a fee to compete in the VFL whether aligned or not.

What is more expensive for AFL clubs with stand alone VFL teams is the license fee payable to the VFL which is considerable more than what traditional VFL clubs pay

I think we could channel dollars into more important areas such as recruiting rather than a standalone VFL.....we need to be at the frontier of introducing DNA profiling into talent identification to avoid the recurrent draft fizzers we have , due to slipping through our amateurish filters
