Tigers still to keep something in reserve

    by: Sam Landsberger
    From: Herald Sun
    March 05, 2012

RICHMOND'S ambitious plans to deliver the club's 11th premiership have been dealt a blow by its failure to ditch VFL affiliate Coburg.

The Tigers wanted to cut ties and field a stand-alone reserves side using money from the $6 million fundraiser dubbed the Fighting Tiger Fund, revealed by the Herald Sun last year.

But Richmond is today expected to announce a three-year alignment renewal with Coburg, meaning the earliest it will be able to copy Geelong and Collingwood's successful formula of fielding a reserves team will be 2015.

The Tigers were unable to wear the cost that severing ties would create, including licensing fees and staffing costs.

Last year chief executive Brendon Gale said he had a dream of Richmond playing VFL games at Punt Rd, and it remains a priority of coach Damien Hardwick.

A reserves team would hand Richmond total control of player development, enhancing the improvement of youngsters such as Brandon Ellis, Todd Elton, Reece Conca and Jake Batchelor.

Despite Richmond's plan to break away from Coburg, the alignment remains one of the strongest in the competition, with both clubs keen to grow supporter bases in Melbourne's northwest corridor.

The renewal was finally signed by both clubs and submitted to AFL Victoria last month.

Richmond also wants to retire its debt, beef up its football department expenditure and spend 100 per cent of its salary cap to help retain stars.

Poot. Why not sign a 1 or 2 year deal?

Richmond sucked the money out of the supporters to fund Coburg's survival rather than its own needs.  :chuck :chuck :chuck

That's a little unfair. If the club couldn't raise enough cash to form a stand alone club then so be it, we have to do what we have to do. And I'm sure all the funds that have been raised through the FTF are being put to good use elsewhere, if that means eradicating the debt first then good for us, I don't have a problem it at all.

Smart move.
Wait till we're in a strong financial position before cutting ties.

I am scared to ask but what are you talking about Monk? What do you mean?

Are you talking about the FTF?

What?

What a rubbish article, I am no fan of the Coburg alignment but it serves its purpose atm.
This deal was always on the cards and we will have a lot more say in who plays and how Coburg lines up.
Besides Punt Rd wont be ready for at least a couple of years, let's get this debt out of the way Punt Rd up and running, then kick Coburg to the gutter!

I remember reading somewhere that the next "opening" to change to a standalone side would be in 3 years.  Otherwise, I would have wanted a 2 year deal.  Do the people bagging this decision really think that Punt Road is suitable for games as it is now?  :lol

A failure of our administration to deliver to the coach a stand alone reserves side that can be developed the way he wants, that the administration has failed to deliver is a failure.
