Brendan Gale interview on the Sunday Footy Show
« on: June 30, 2013, 12:54:14 PM »
Gale was just on Sunday footy show, interesting bit when asked about punt rd being a boutique stadium. Said afl was red hot on it, but pretty much shrugged it off as nothing in it for us.
Good stuff as we would never play there and either would our vfl team.
Seems benny left it in the afls hands to offer us something substantial if we were ever to consider, hopefully not IMO

Benny Gale was interview by Nathan Brown on the Sunday Footy Show just before:

* Asked about the 3-0-75 plan? We lost a number of close games that could have seen us play finals last year but we were simply not good enough. We have 60k members now which is a great effort by our fans and we had forecast to be debt free by 2014 and we are a year ahead of that.

* You can't have a strong on-field team without a strong business.

* No Cairns game after this year. In 2010 it was a commercial decision and good for the code. We wanted to strengthen our business/finances. Asked about no development games anywhere? Benny said no I wouldn't say so at this stage.

* Surprised if Williams wasn't a candidate for the Melbourne job. His focus is on us now and we hope Melbourne will respect that. We won't stand in his way if he did get the senior coaching job. He's definitely had a terrific impact. A bit mad (laughs) but he's ideas-wired and passionate, has a great relation with Dimma and is a great teacher of young men. Benny said he can't speak highly enough of Chocco. You need guys who take the path less travels, questions and tests others.

* Asked what have you done differently to the last 30 years? It's not just one thing or one person. One thing he would single out is we planned what we were doing and stuck to the plan. There's a proven track record towards success in AFL. Getting good people in with a shared purpose and journey. Not anywhere near there yet but we are building towards it.

* Against Melbourne getting a top end priority pick. Believes in equalisation but them getting a pick is disproportionate and unfair to the other clubs. He believes Melbourne has talent on their list.

* Punt Rd boutique stadium? Very exciting concept and a boutique stadium makes sense for the AFL but not for us. Unless there's some compelling financially argument it's not for us. 22k capacity doesn't help us as we won't be playing AFL games there at that small capacity.

Tigers chief Brendan Gale says on-field success the priority for Richmond

    Gilbert Gardiner
    News Limited Network
    July 1, 2013

RICHMOND chief executive Brendan Gale has stood firm behind a decision to play home games in Melbourne, the Tigers turning their backs on lucrative interstate offers.

In 2010, the Tigers sold three home games to play Gold Coast at Cazaly Stadium in Cairns, the last of which is on July 13.

While the short-term deal has provided a boost to club coffers, on-field it's failed, with the Tigers not having won at the venue.

"The decision was made to play in Cairns pretty much because we had to for the long-term interest of our members - of our club - to build our financial strength now," Gale said on Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show.

"It was a commercial decision, clearly it was good for the code as well.

"We think we've sold the code well up there but that will be it - we'll be playing our home games back in Melbourne."

Gale all but ruled out selling home games in the future.

"Not at this stage ...(it's) not anticipated, I wouldn't have thought so."

Gale also waded into the AFL equalisation debate, dismissing suggestions Melbourne was in need of a priority pick.

"I'm a big supporter of equalisation," Gale said.

"I believe a priority pick provides a disproportionate benefit (in this case).

"Melbourne have talent on their list.

"It's about structure and (to) put in place an environment where you get the best out of that talent."

Meanwhile, Gale fell short of embracing the AFL's push for a 22,000-seat boutique stadium at Punt Road Oval.

"The concept of a low-capacity, low-cost stadium to improve stadium returns for some clubs makes a lot of sense ... but it doesn't make any commercial sense for us," he said.

"As exciting as it is ... in the absence of any compelling commercial financial motives it's not something we'll be willing to entertain."
