Tigers chief Brendan Gale says on-field success the priority for Richmond Gilbert Gardiner

July 1, 2013RICHMOND chief executive Brendan Gale has stood firm behind a decision to play home games in Melbourne, the Tigers turning their backs on lucrative interstate offers.
In 2010, the Tigers sold three home games to play Gold Coast at Cazaly Stadium in Cairns, the last of which is on July 13.
While the short-term deal has provided a boost to club coffers, on-field it's failed, with the Tigers not having won at the venue.
"The decision was made to play in Cairns pretty much because we had to for the long-term interest of our members - of our club - to build our financial strength now," Gale said on Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show.
"It was a commercial decision, clearly it was good for the code as well.
"We think we've sold the code well up there but that will be it - we'll be playing our home games back in Melbourne."
Gale all but ruled out selling home games in the future.
"Not at this stage ...(it's) not anticipated, I wouldn't have thought so."
Gale also waded into the AFL equalisation debate, dismissing suggestions Melbourne was in need of a priority pick.
"I'm a big supporter of equalisation," Gale said.
"I believe a priority pick provides a disproportionate benefit (in this case).
"Melbourne have talent on their list.
"It's about structure and (to) put in place an environment where you get the best out of that talent."
Meanwhile, Gale fell short of embracing the AFL's push for a 22,000-seat boutique stadium at Punt Road Oval.
"The concept of a low-capacity, low-cost stadium to improve stadium returns for some clubs makes a lot of sense ... but it doesn't make any commercial sense for us," he said.
"As exciting as it is ... in the absence of any compelling commercial financial motives it's not something we'll be willing to entertain."
