Fitness, feel-good factor convince Tigers veteran Chris Newman to play on Liam Mannix

August 26, 2014 - 6:09PM Fitness and the feel-good factor are behind Richmond veteran Chris Newman's decision to play on in 2015.
Newman and his club confirmed on Tuesday the former captain had signed a one-year contract extension. He will play game number 250 this weekend in the club's must-win match against Sydney.
Newman, 32, has played 16 games this year after tearing a calf.
It was his recovery from that injury, coupled with the Tigers' late-season form surge, that convinced a wavering Newman to play on.
"It didn't really sit comfortably with me to walk away now," Newman said on Tuesday. "It just feels like we've got too much unfinished business.
"It was probably a different mindset when I tore my calf. I was probably at my lowest point there, and I thought that realistically I wouldn't go around again, but things have changed.
"I needed to be confident that my body could hold up, and I'm really confident that it will. I'm feeling pretty good."
Newman said he felt "blessed" to play 250 games for the Tigers, but said the milestone meant nothing for the upcoming match.
"You can't really play emotional football," he said. "If anything, it might have some bearing at the start of the game, but certainly I think when you run out there it becomes very process-driven.
"I don't think we'll be drawing on any of that, we'll just be worrying about what we can control."
If Richmond can beat the Swans - a massive task at ANZ Stadium - it can realise an unlikely goal of making finals from a 3-10 start to the season.
Richmond is on an eight-game winning streak, but momentum may count for nothing when confronted by Sydney's twin towers Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett. Ominously, Sydney was the club the Tigers last lost to, by 11 points in round 14.
Newman said he was always confident the club's form would turn around.
"The win-loss record wasn't paying justice to how close we were. We lost a lot of those games we possibly could have won and it could have been a different story. I always had confidence in what we were doing, the process that we had, and that's really holding up now."
