Critique and analysis are bedfellows, and even the clubs training, recruiting, list management, gameplan and playing standards should not be immune from review internally & externally.

How is improvement demanded if there are so many back slappers satisfied with mediocrity ?

Just can't see how Newman's current performance standard is satisfactory when this needs to improve next year to make & win finals whilst building towards a premiership.

lol at this.

it makes me wonder at just how many we will turn over.
my money is on close to  the bare minimum requirement of 3 or 4 from the list proper and  one or two rookies with thomas and miles being promoted to the list proper.
Its scary to think that they will only use 3 nd picks.

im not sure about the club. but i would say most thinking supporters all agree we have a middling list and there is much building still required.

we all know they will only cut UNCONTRACTED PLAYERS. So whos in the gun, which 4 or 5 are the most likely to go.
uncontracted players are.
Arnot, Astbury,Batchelor,Dea, A Edwards, Elton, Griffiths, Helbig, Knights, Mcbean, Mcdonough, Mcintosh, O'Hanlon, Petterd.

Going by what has transpired this yr and attempting to judge what their thinking may be from their actions and words id say the following are safe.
Astbury - im not sure if he hasnt already been signed.
Batchelor - they talk him up,
Elton - i think his age  size and position will see him safe.  not many clubs cut junior kpps after such a short time on lists.
Griffiths - has probably done just  enough to be kept.
Mcbean - see elton
Mcdonough - another junior will be given time.
Mcintosh - junior whos had lots of injury they will give him every opportunity when fit.
Petterd - hes a hardwick favorite in fairness has probably done enough to be retained in front of many others.

so it leaves imo 6 players in the gun
Arnot, Dea, A Edwards, Helbig, knights, OHanlon, with king already retired.
if we do promote both miles and thomas,  well miles has already signed a contract. and we use 4 nd picks, gotta use 4 at least imo, after taking just one junior player last yr any way heres hoping its a minimum of 4. but the club in its delusion probably wont see it this way.
5 of Arnot, Dea, A Edwards, Helbig, Knights, and O'Hanlon  imo are most in the gun.
to take it to its theoretical conclusion those going would be
Arnot, A Edwards, Helbig, Knights, Ohanlon. with King already retired thus allowing for 4 nd picks and two rookie promotions in Miles and Thomas.

Critique and analysis are bedfellows, and even the clubs training, recruiting, list management, gameplan and playing standards should not be immune from review internally & externally.

Well this should liven the forum up... :lol :lol

Sad that some people only get excitement when things go poorly at the club or they make mistakes. You'd think an 8 game winning streak would liven the forum up plenty

Dullards invariably arrive at the simplistic conclusion that those of us who criticise the club "enjoy" it's failure. Some of us prefer to save our excitement to winning streaks of real substance that lead to and include finals and are backed up the following year. At this stage this current streak has yet to achieve that and is nothing greatly different to what's been seen before in previous false dawns.

Do you disagree that since we've been winning there has been less activity on the forum? Nothing wrong with criticism but it shouldn't be constant negative comments on players, coaches and the club that gives this forum life which sadly it is and we suddenly start winning it dies down. If it's so important to save your excitement (I once again ask what is the point of following football if you don't allow yourself to get excited) then shouldn't you also save your criticism as well? What makes it okay to bang on about the losses well after they are done and dusted but not even get up and about over a good winning streak?
P.S How many times did you edit this post?

Because improvement's something that should always be strived for - for three decades we've drifted between mediocrity and utter shyte and have teased with late seson charges that've amounted to nothing - why carry on like we just won back to back flags when it happens again? Does is really stuffing matter what "level" of enjoyment some of us get out of each win and whether some of us prefer to look at the bigger picture? Again it's simplistic to think there's only one way to follow & support a football club.

Also yes there's been less activity since the winning streak but pretty sure it has more to do with the fact we were 3-10 at the start of it and that it wasn't a terribly exciting streak or looking like we might sneak into the finals until we we're about 5 or 6 wins into it.

I don't mind him on the list for another season but as long as he isn't keeping someone out of the side.
Yep same here. No issue with him being on the list. But if he's a walk up start regardless of form it's an issue.

It will be an issue bc you guys should know that Newman will never ever get dropped for form

Well guys, the foundation stone of mediocrity has been laid for 2015.

Its more of the same from here. Well probably not give a contract to mcbean and Griffiths next year. Theyll slide to Footscray or Carlton. At least we can keep playing Newman and Grigg. We'll worry about building the club when the possibility of a winning streak is over.

a few of us have stuck to our guns thru the winning streak as well.
as you say ive seen it all before and in all honesty despite a few wins i dont see any real improvement on last yr in fact even with most of the wins id say we have been worse.

I disagree. We have shown much more resolve in our victories this year. The Essendon and Adelaide games in particular would have been games we would have lost last year IMHO. Sure our football was more exciting overall last year but they were flakier too. A fit Maric this year and the addition of Miles makes us a better side.

well we do disagree then.the same sort of problems we had last yr are still there imho. lack of depth lack of quality and poor list structure have not gone away.

also imo most players have stagnated gone backwards or in some cases shown minimal improvement..
we have found just one player in miles and ivans yr to date has not been overly different to last yr. in fact we have failed to find a decent chop out for him.
we have failed to beat a top 4 side beaten only p/a and ess who are in the 8 and when we played p/a they were in the middle of a slump. finally there is still way too much left up to way too few.

I didn't say we were a top 4 side mate. I only said we have improved in our ability to win close matches against reasonable opposition. The players haven't dropped their heads for 8 weeks. This was happening intermittently last year all year. We still have a long way to go to be a regular finals side but I can see a steely resolve in the group which wasn't there last year.
Each to their own I suppose!
