Gawn forward as Demons move on Tigers

Bachar doubt opens up options

Bachar Houli is unlikely to be fit for round one as he struggles with a calf injury. The Tigers moved youngster Hugo Ralph Smith into a running defender role in the pre-season and gave him the nod in the main game ahead of Marlion Pickett who played that role in the second of the practice matches on the day.

Ralph Smith was impressive in the full hit out with clever clean hands and good ball use, he has good run and looked comfortable in the role.

“Hugo is putting his hand up in the pre-season to fill that spot. he was really serviceable today and we will see how he is next week against Collingwood,” assistant coach Adam Kingsley said.

Josh Caddy has also played across half back in the pre-season but was used on a wing again in the practice game and did well.

Young Tigers

Jake Aarts did well forward for the Tigers and Jack Ross managed more midfield time. Ross looked good doing some clever things. He hit perhaps the kick of the day in the third quarter when on the run and under pressure he saw Jack Riewoldt in the opposite pocket and squared a low flat kick across his body to find the full forward.

Shae Bolton at half forward was good for the Tigers. Dion Prestia did not play as he recovers from injury.

Thompson Dow came on in the last quarter of the main game as a bunch of Tigers including Dusty Martin and Shane Edwards came off after playing their predetermined minutes.

Stand By

No 50m penalties were paid for the new man on the mark rule.

Whether it was the new rule or the familiarity with the wide size of the ground Melbourne looked the quicker of the sides with their ball use and run through the corridor of the ground.

“Melbourne were able to hit the corridor a bit more than we would have liked, maybe that was the new rule, maybe we were a bit sloppy in defence,” Richmond assistant coach Adam Kingsley said.

DEMONS SEE OFF TIGERS IN COMPETITIVE HIT OUT

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
26 February 2021

Melbourne and Richmond have played out a competitive practice match at Casey Fields this morning.

The Demons won by 11 points - 14.9.(93) to 12.10.(82) - in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout.

The reigning premiers were without a handful of premiership players - Dion Prestia, Kane Lambert, Bachar Houli, Daniel Rioli and Marlion Pickett (who came on late in the last quarter) - while the Demons had Jack Viney, Sam Weideman, Jake Melksham, Angus Brayshaw, Michael Hibberd, Kysaiah Pickett and recruit Ben Brown among those on the sidelines.

The Tigers saw Dustin Martin and Shane Edwards very busy around the ball and across half-forward but coach Damien Hardwick will be most pleased by the impressive performances of 2019 draft pair Will Martyn and Hugo Ralphsmith.

The former picked up plenty of touches, particularly early, and impressed with his fierce attack on the ball while the latter looked comfortable playing off half-back, playing a rebounding role in tandem with Liam Baker.

Jake Aarts was busy with three goals, while Jack Riewoldt and Josh Caddy each kicked two.

Richmond added the likes of Thomson Dow, who was busy in the final term, Callum Coleman-Jones, Patrick Naish and triallist Jordan Gallucci late in the game.

For the Tigers, it was a solid hit out which they’ll only benefit from.

Two changes for next week:
Shai to go back to black hair, not a fan of the blonde
Hugo to go with short back and sides, it's un richmond like except late 80s early 90s.

I’m not too concerned. We had that draw against Collingwood in round 2 last year and came home with the wet sail. Premierships aren’t won in feb

From Foxsports:

Here’s what we learned from every AFL club after this weekend’s scratch matches.

RICHMOND

Truthfully, we didn’t learn much. Richmond lost but did enough to suggest they’re still up for the fight after back-to-back flags and are the team to beat until proven otherwise. Damien Hardwick is still prepared to make the tough calls at selection, with Marlion Pickett absent for much of the ‘A’ game and replaced by uncapped Hugo Ralphsmith. Also notable was Jack Riewoldt, who looked sprightly and dangerous around goal despite the dialogue last year suggesting he was on his last legs. He and Tom Lynch worked in tandem quite well as the latter enters his third year at the club. For the most part though it seems like Richmond are tracking as they should be heading into another season after a slightly shorter pre-season period than 16 other clubs.

THE ONE BIG TAKEAWAY FOR ALL 18 CLUBS AFTER THE SCRATCH MATCHES:

Andrew Slevison
SEN
March 1, 2021

Reigning premiers find further depth

In recent times, the Tigers have made a habit of bringing through fringe and depth players and turning them into regular senior contributors. It has been enormously helpful towards their recent success.

That appeared to be the case yet again with several players performing well in the defeat to Melbourne.

The standouts were 2019 draft pair Will Martyn and Hugo Ralphsmith who both looked comfortable at the level.

Martyn played up around the ball and did not look out of place, particularly with his attack on the contest. Ralphsmith operated off half-back and was busy, providing rebound by using his pace out of defence. He also snuck forward for a late shot on goal.

Jake Aarts was also heavily involved, kicking three goals and attacking the contest with vigour, as he pushed his case for Round 1 selection.
