That had to be the worst display of umpiring for a long long time. Not only biased with 13 more free kicks to the Dogs  :thumbsdown but the decision making by the umps was utterly clueless :facepalm.

On us, we showed our inexperience. Failed to make the most of the breeze on both occasions (unfamiliar with the Western Oval) and we got punished every time for our defensive lapses in concentration. We allowed the Dogs too many easy exits out the front from stoppages and rebounds. You always need to protect the defensive side.

In the future we need to be beating middle of the road side like the Bulldogs.

No, tonight's umpiring "effort" was stock standard for the AFLW this season.

Have said every week the standard is deplorable.. tonight's was no exception

------------------------------------------------------------

THE WESTERN Bulldogs have finished their 2021 NAB AFLW campaign on a positive note with a 13-point victory over Richmond in their final-round clash at VU Whitten Oval.

After opening up a three-goal lead at half-time, the Dogs were tormented by their former captain Katie Brennan who kicked two of her three goals for the Tigers in the third quarter to trim the deficit to just four points.

But despite being held goalless in the third term, the Bulldogs reasserted themselves in the final stanza, booting two of the last three goals to seal the deal.

Making the 7.3 (45) to 5.2 (32) result even sweeter for the hosts was that it came against Brennan and star midfielder Monique Conti who were both playing their old side for the first time.

Kirsty Lamb was the Bulldogs' best player with 23 disposals, seven tackles, four clearances and a goal, while Elisabeth Georgostathis (10 touches) did a magnificent tagging job on the usually prolific Conti (12).

Brooke Lochland (23 and a goal) and Ellie Blackburn (20) were also instrumental to the victory.

Brennan (14 disposals) stood out for the Tigers, and she was well supported by Harriet Cordner - who shut down star Dogs forward Izzy Huntington - Kate Dempsey and Rebecca Miller.

The Bulldogs made the most of the strong breeze in the first quarter, doubling Richmond for inside 50s (10-5) and tripling them for marks inside 50 (6-2), to kick four of the first five goals.

Two of those were booted by Kirsten McLeod, one of which was a magnificent running effort from 52 metres out after taking the intercept mark on the wing and taking two bounces.

Kicking into the wind in the second term, the Dogs set up cleverly defensively, making it hard for Richmond to get it out of their backline, and not even a mark-of-the-year contender from Ellie McKenzie over Lochland could inspire the Tigers to cut the three-goal deficit by half-time.

Richmond dominated the third period but despite Brennan's best efforts in the second half, she was not able to drag her side over the line as the Doggies held firm.

Bulldogs squash Tigers, but miss AFLW finals

WESTERN BULLDOGS 4.0 5.0 5.3 7.3 (45)
RICHMOND                1.0 2.1 4.2 5.2 (32)

GOALS:
Western Bulldogs: Lochland, McLeod (2), Morris-Dalton, Huntington, Lamb, Toogood.
Richmond: Stahl, Brennan (3), Wakefield

BEST:
Western Bulldogs: McLeod, Lochland, Lamb, Blackburn, Rennie, Moody, Toogood.
Richmond: Brennan, Stahl, McKenzie, Frederick, Seymour, Miller, Dempsey

The Western Bulldogs have ended their season with a 13-point win over Richmond at Whitten Oval on Friday night, but couldn’t make up the percentage deficit needed to launch a finals campaign.

The game was the first between the two teams for AFLW premiership points, having only clashed in practice matches.

The Bulldogs sat in eighth spot on the ladder after a 56-point loss to Adelaide last round, and whilst mathematically there was a slim chance for a finals appearance, the young team needed a near miracle.

The Tigers weren’t a chance for finals but after three wins following a winless season last year, they were hungry for another victory to wrap up their season.

The Bulldogs were kicking with the breeze and Brooke Lochland got them on the board early with her first for the season. In the same minute, Bulldog Kirsten McLeod booted her first of two for the quarter.

Despite leading the clearance count and with 70 per cent kicking efficiency, the Tigers managed just one major from Tayla Stahl. Bulldogs key forward Nell Morris-Dalton slotted her first AFLW goal to give them an 18-point advantage at the first break.

Skipper Katie Brennan opened the Tigers’ second term with a goal, but Bulldog Izzy Huntington responded for the Dogs before half-time.

Brennan wasn’t done, slotting two in a row for the Tigers early in the second half, equalling Carlton’s Darcy Vescio at the top of the goalkicking table.

The Bulldogs led inside 50s but couldn’t convert, one controversially called touched off the boot of Morris-Dalton meant the home side notched just three behinds.

An unexpected mark gave Kirsty Lamb a clear passage to snap a goal, breaking the Bulldogs’ drought. Richmond held strong in defence, Tiger Courtney Wakefield getting her first for the night to shave the margin. Bulldogs skipper Ellie Blackburn assisted Bonnie Toogood, the beneficiary of the final goal to seal the win for the young side.

BRENNAN AND CONTI FACE FORMER SIDE

Tiger stars Monique Conti and Brennan went head-to-head with the team they left at the end of 2019.

Conti had 12 disposals and a mark, while Brennan had a career night, finishing with three goals, 14 disposals and two marks.

CO-CAPTAINS BECOME RIVALS

Picks one and two of the 2020 draft, Richmond’s Ellie McKenzie and Bulldog Jess Fitzgerald were on opposing sides for the first time, having co-captained the NAB League side Northern Knights together in 2020 and going to school together.

McKenzie shone, taking a spectacular hanger in the second quarter and ending with 13 disposals and four marks. Fitzgerald had a quieter night with nine disposals and a mark.

Both have impressed in their maiden year, each debuting in round one and playing every game for their respective teams, as well as both earning a NAB AFLW Rising star nomination.

We've gone from being non-competitive last year to competitive this season. Still a long way off the top sides. Need to go to draft well again and recruit well. Especially need more quality mids to help out Conti and McKenzie.

Miller has been the biggest improver this year IMV. Another good game today in key defence alongside Cordner.

I don’t follow this too closely but try to catch games when I’m home and I know the girls are playing. Looks to me there’s a good core group of 6-8 girls to build around and we just need to keep hitting the draft to pick up gems like McKenzie and improve our bottom 6.

Conti
McKenzie
Brennan
Wakefield
Seymour
Cordner

There’s prob a few more but those are the ones that have stood out to me.

McKenzie is an absolute star in the making. My prediction is she will be the best player in the league in the not too distant future.
First year and we are seeing glimpses of what will be a dominant player for many many years.
The club that keeps giving.
