Body size
« on: October 15, 2008, 03:21:09 AM »
Hawthorn sure get their players to put on the weight if you look at a simple equation of (weight in kg + 100) - (height in cm). I guess it's a kind of BMI. So many Hawks weights are greater than the last two digits of their height.

Hawthorn (bold - premiership 22):

+19 Dew
+11 Campbell
+9 Guerra, Croad
+8 Roughead
+7 Hodge
+6 Lewis, Ladson, Crawford
+5 Mitchell, Williams, Franklin, Brown, Taylor
+3 Osbourne, Bateman, Sewell
+2 Rioli, McGlynn
+1 Boyle
Ev Tuck, Clarke, Dawson, Stokes#
-----------------------
-1 Birchall, Murphy
-2 Gilham, Bailey, McEntee
-3 Young, Renouf, Muston
-4 Dowler, Whitecross
-7 Ellis, Thorp, Moss, Morton, Kennedy

Only 5 of their premiership 22 were subpar and of those only Ellis was below -3 because he's only 20. 13 premiership Hawks were greater than +3 and most in their prime.

Compare that to Richmond: (bold - our 'best' 22)

+9 Richo
+8 Collard#
+6 Gourdis
+4 Simmonds
+3 Bowden, Johnson, Jackson
+2 Newman, Schulz, Pattison
+1 Tuck, White, Pettifer
Ev Deledio, Tambling, Foley, Hughes, King, Coughlan, Thomson
----------------------------------------
-1 Polak
-2 Browny
-3 Moore, Raines, Silvester#
-4 Rance, Connors, Graham
-5 Cotchin, McGuane, Howat#
-6 Riewoldt, Morton, Polo, Cartledge#
-7 McMahon, Meyer, JON
-8 Thursfield, Casserly
-9 Edwards
-12 Putt, Collins

Shows how many younger and lighter bodies we have. 9 Tiges in our 'best' 22 are subpar on this weight to height scale and 7 are below -3. Only two - big Richo and Simmo who are both over 30 - are greater than +3.

Geelong as expected being an older side have mostly bigger bodies: (bold - grand final 22)

+15 Hunt
+8 Chapman
+6 Ottens, Ablett, Hawkins
+5 Ling, Egan, West
+4 Mooney, Rooke, Enright, Tenace, Djerrkura
+3 Scarlett, Milburn, Stokes, D.Johnson
+2 Harley, Kelly, Lonergan, Byrnes, Prismall
+1 Bartel, Selwood, Blake, Donohue
Ev Wojcinski
-------------------------------
-1 S.Johnson, D.Simpson
-2 Varcoe, Taylor
-3 Corey, Davenport
-4 Gamble, S.Simpson
-7 Mackie, Hogan
-10 McKenna

Like Hawthorn only 5 players subpar and only Mackie was below -3. Not as many Cats above +3 but they still have eight of them.

Chuck in the Bulldogs who are considered lighter on (bold - Prelim Final 22)

+11 Hahn
+9 Hudson, Lake
+8 Akermanis
+7 Minson
+6 Boyd, McDougall
+5 Johnson, Higgins, West, Williams
+4 Cooney, Eagleton
+3 Gilbee
+2 Morris, Skipper
+1 Giansiracusa, Welsh, Callan
------------------------------
-1 Cross, Street
-2 Griffen
-3 Tiller, Ray, Wight, Addison, Wood
-4 Murphy, Harbrow, Stack
-5 Hargrave
-6 Everitt, O'Shea
-7 Hill
-8 O'Keefe
-9 Ward
-10 Lynch
-11 Reid, Boumann
-12 Grant

7 subpar dogs in their PF 22 and 4 below -3 so more lighter bodies than the Hawks and Cats. 10 bullies are +3 surprisingly but that includes 2 ruckmen and 4 oldies.

Okay yes all this means stuff all as far as who can or can't play football but like the Player Age breakdowns it demonstrates we've got a fair way to go even if we were to make the finals next year. These figures are from the start of the year so hopefully our cubs get into the weights again over summer and bulk up more. Add to that we recruit like last year draftees who have some bodysize already and will fill out even further.

Look at Zac dawson in 2 years going from a runt to a mid size player.

Either it is a Wallace philosophy to have a lightweight mosquito fleet or our S&C team have NFI.

Also, think we lack a few genuine meatheads - when you have aggressive blokes like Campbell Brown in the gym it would give the lads a bit of a kick.

Some of this comes down to age of course but I do believe we have recruited like frame players to try and generate a quick, running team. As we all know though a strong mobile team is much better than a slight one.

Players such as Mcguane, Thursfield and Moore need to really bulk up. While they don't want to lose their pace we need at least two of these defender to be able to compete against opposition power forwards.

Similarly Riewoldt and Hughes need to increase their core strength to push off their opposition.

Interestingly it is our midfield who appears to contain our strongest players which may explain why we had such a good year in clearances in 2008.

Rubbish it comes down to development

They have been in the game for more than 3 years they should have put on weight.

polo, Moore, thursfield etc etc WTF is going on there.

Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Most kids at 18 can not hope to obtain the strength and size that a man of 25 can. It's just biology. Some players are exceptions of course but for other no matter how much weights/powers etc they do and take they struggle to every get bigger. I wouldn't be surprized if Jordy and JON fit in this category.

Yep I could have highlighted age brackets but for the odd exception most of those in the + range are mature players.

Here is Carlton's who are perhaps more around our level in terms of youth.

+9 Fevola
+7 C.Cloke
+6 Stevens
+3 Betts, Waite
+2 Walker, Wiggins
+1 Scotland, S.O'hAilpin
Ev Murphy, Thorton, Hadley, Hartlett, Bannister
-1 Russell, Houlihan, Austin
-2 Bower, Carrazzo, Anderson, Pfeiffer
-3 Kreuzer, Edwards
-4 Judd, Browne, Grigg, Hampson, Armfield
-5 Simpson
-6 Gibbs, Jamison, Fisher

Going by Dew and Hunt every good side has their own pie-eater  :D.

Dew was +40 at the start of last preseason lol. Ended up being worth it just for that 10 minute spell.

Really, given that he did a hammy during the year and missed a few games he did well to get it down to that then.
