Tiger plans to put injured quad to test

Herald-Sun
12 April 2016

RICHMOND star Brett Deledio has ruled himself out of Friday night’s clash with West Coast but hopes to use the time to take the next step in his recovery from a quadriceps injury.

The Tigers playmaker plans to include longer kicking and set shots to his largely running-based training program.

“I won’t be playing this week unfortunately,” Deledio told RSN Sports Radio.

“I’m certainly running really strongly and feeling as fit as I have for a long time but I need to do more kicking at the moment and just get myself right.

“Once I can kick flat out on the run I’ll be very comfortable knowing that I can come out there and perform my role.”

Deledio pinged his quadriceps at training a week before the Tigers’ season-opener against Carlton.

He has been limited to running laps and short kicks (inside 30m) ever since.

Deledio said it was difficult watching from the sidelines as Richmond dropped consecutive games to Collingwood and Adelaide.

“We’re actually playing some reasonable footy, mistakes aside. If we didn’t have these mistakes (our numbers would suggest) we’re going better than this time last year,” he said.

“It’s just individuals making errors at the wrong time.

“We’ve got a lot of young players out there that are still finding their feet.

“When you’re missing some senior players and you’ve got kids playing, things don’t go right all the time.

“They’re going to be a hell of a lot better for the run.”

Deledio called on Richmond’s senior players to “stand up” following “unfair” criticism of skipper Trent Cotchin.

“It’s been unfair this criticism that he’s been copping,” he said.

“How can Trent be solely responsible for every single play.

“He sets up his midfield, but we’ve got other leaders — not just leaders but senior players in positions out there on the field — that need to take some responsibility.

“Yes Trent is our captain, and we’ve got our leadership group, but we’ve got senior players out there that (are) leaders anyway so start to stand up, take some responsibility, get our setups right and we don’t lose these games.”

Deledio has ruled himself out of Friday night's clash and opened up about the "grief" his latest injury has caused him.

The Tigers are again missing their play-making half-forward, having won only three of their past 12 matches without him.

But he will again be sidelined this week, and appears unlikely to play senior football a week later against Melbourne at the MCG as he recovers from a "high quad" injury.

Deledio revealed he can only kick 30 metres but expects to step this up to 40m and 50m on the run at training on Thursday, and then resume set shots on Saturday.

"I don't think I will be playing this week, unfortunately. I am certainly running really strongly and feeling as fit as I have for a long time but I need to do more kicking at the moment and just get myself right," he said on Tuesday.

"Once I can kick flat out on the run, I will be very comfortable knowing I can go out there and perform my role.

"[There is] absolutely nothing wrong with my calf or achilles anymore, they couldn't be better ... it's just this high quad.

"I had a little nick in it a week out from round one and that is what is causing me the grief. I have never torn any soft tissue like that. It's just a little nick - that is what has held me back for so long."

Deledio was hurt at training after taking a long shot at goal and then a short kick - a fortnight out from round one.

"I knew I had pulled something - you just know when something is not right," he said on Radio Sport National.

"I was in the middle of the ground. I had to walk off right in between everyone because I couldn't really run too much. I just said to the docs: 'Next year I am not training two weeks out from round one because it's two years in a row I have caused myself a bit of mischief'."

Deledio said he had initially hoped to return in round two.

"I always had my fingers crossed that I would be back in two weeks and miss round one and be right to go round two," he said.

"But with a quad injury, and kicking so important in our game, you just can't rush. If I did, I could potentially do it again, therefore spend more time on the sidelines which I don't want."

WGAF, no Deledio...no Richmond, pathetic.
DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.
