Tiger plans to put injured quad to testHerald-Sun
12 April 2016RICHMOND star Brett Deledio has ruled himself out of Friday night’s clash with West Coast but hopes to use the time to take the next step in his recovery from a quadriceps injury.
The Tigers playmaker plans to include longer kicking and set shots to his largely running-based training program.
“I won’t be playing this week unfortunately,” Deledio told RSN Sports Radio.
“I’m certainly running really strongly and feeling as fit as I have for a long time but I need to do more kicking at the moment and just get myself right.
“Once I can kick flat out on the run I’ll be very comfortable knowing that I can come out there and perform my role.”
Deledio pinged his quadriceps at training a week before the Tigers’ season-opener against Carlton.
He has been limited to running laps and short kicks (inside 30m) ever since.
Deledio said it was difficult watching from the sidelines as Richmond dropped consecutive games to Collingwood and Adelaide.
“We’re actually playing some reasonable footy, mistakes aside. If we didn’t have these mistakes (our numbers would suggest) we’re going better than this time last year,” he said.
“It’s just individuals making errors at the wrong time.
“We’ve got a lot of young players out there that are still finding their feet.
“When you’re missing some senior players and you’ve got kids playing, things don’t go right all the time.
“They’re going to be a hell of a lot better for the run.”
Deledio called on Richmond’s senior players to “stand up” following “unfair” criticism of skipper Trent Cotchin.
“It’s been unfair this criticism that he’s been copping,” he said.
“How can Trent be solely responsible for every single play.
“He sets up his midfield, but we’ve got other leaders — not just leaders but senior players in positions out there on the field — that need to take some responsibility.
“Yes Trent is our captain, and we’ve got our leadership group, but we’ve got senior players out there that (are) leaders anyway so start to stand up, take some responsibility, get our setups right and we don’t lose these games.”
