I thought he meant as in just losing the Dreamtime game, like Essendon did last year. I didn't, and still don't, read any more into it.

It's not his fault he was awarded the medal.  :)

Agree Fish it isn't his fault that he won the boomerang but the comment....well..... it isn't the first time he has said something that has come across as condescending to the opposition ::)

Probably wasn't his intent but from where I was sitting that's what it sounded like....

I tend to give people the benefit of any doubt - a sucker would probably be accurate.  :-[ Not that I mind.  :)

I also thought Matthew Lloyd did a good job with his speech.  :o An Essendon fan behind me was saying, "Don't talk Lloydy, don't talk"  ;D but I reckon he did well.

It's hard not to come across as arrogant or condescending to the losing team when you're a winner. eg Aussie cricket team.

As a player on the winning side all you need to say is "Thanks to insert losing team for a great game tonight. Well done to our boys on the win and thanks to all the supporters for coming and making it a great night. Cheers!" If you say anything more it sounds condensending or patronising.

It was plain insulting to the players that were better on the ground.  Heck, I wouldn't have minded half as much if it had been given to Stanton or McPhee but Hird???!!!  Give me strength!!!!!

i don't think he was BOG, however it's hard to think of a player that was better than him, 10 players could've won it.

i can tell you who played better than hird
DELEDIO

followed by : polak, richo, lucas, even that winderlick was better than hird

but deledio was by far the best and sexiest player on the ground

The Age certainly thought this if you look at the poll on their homepage.

Sheeds thought so too. Gave Lids his 5 votes in the coaches award. Lids finished with 8 votes, Lucas was next with 7 and Hird got 2.
