Gary March "delighted" by Sheedy interest

RICHMOND president Gary March has denied claims that the current Tigers' board would never appoint Kevin Sheedy as coach.
Media reports yesterday suggested that some board members were vehemently opposed to the idea of Sheedy as Richmond coach and would not ratify his appointment even if the coaching sub-committee recommended him.
“The board doesn’t have any negativity towards anyone because we don’t get involved other than give (the sub-committee) the criteria that they’ve got to follow and the type of person we want to get,” March said on radio station SEN this morning.
Richmond is looking for a new coach following Terry Wallace’s departure. Sheedy, who coached Essendon for 27 years, announced on his SuperFooty blog last week that he wanted the role.
The Tigers have put a lengthly selection process in place as they search for their new senior coach. Last weekend, Sheedy said he was happy to go through the Tigers’ evaluation process, a decision which delighted the Tigers’ president.
“He is going to go through the coaching process which I’m delighted with because he’s an icon of the game and an icon of the club,” March said.
March said he hadn’t “put a line” through any contenders, but even so, he didn’t wield that sort of power
“Richmond Football Club is not Zimbabwe ... we don’t have a dictatorship. I don’t always get my way all the time … I don’t have that level of influence over other board members,” he said.
March said he had not yet discussed the coaching role with the former Tigers' legend.
“I’ve never had that conversation with Kevin. I’ve had conversations with Kevin Sheedy over the past two years to get him back involved with Richmond … centred around his desire to help us with marketing and at that stage, after the Essendon experience, he wasn’t looking to go back into coaching and we had a contracted coach so we never entertained Kevin coaching Richmond. But the landscape’s changed.”
It had been suggested that the groundswell of support for Sheedy was causing unrest at Tigerland, something dismissed by March.
“I wouldn’t have thought (Sheedy’s interest) was divisive. I haven’t heard anything from anyone,” he said.
